The Return of Data? (spoilers)

^ It's not just the mention of the book's poor sales, but also using that as a justification to disregard my work. Didn't exactly fill me with warm, fuzzy feelings, y'know? :)

I'm sorry; I didn't mean to suggest that your work should be disregarded, merely that its continuity needn't necessarily be followed by other books (the sales reference related only to audience familiarity). There's nothing to say it wouldn't be an excellent contradictory work - like Crucible was designed to be, and many older books have become. No slight intended. :)

(Our exchange highlights perhaps one of the few negatives among the many positives of a Trek Literature board frequented by authors, editors, and fans.)

But the difference is that AotF, as far as I know, was written with the design of fitting into the voluntary inter-novel continuity that some of the novels have, specifically carrying over concepts from the "A Time To..." books and the Titan series.

^ I meant more in end result. Many of the early pocket titles also were meant to fit together, yes? Besides, books written to fit into the voluntary continuity needn't necessarily agree with all other titles written to do the same.

I'll admit (though it has no bearing on my point) that I'd rather see the continuity go forward recognizing only Vanguard, the DS9 Relaunch (including A Stitch In Time and Hollow Men), A Time To Kill, A Time To Heal, parts of the S.C.E., and Serpents Among the Ruins. (Oddly enough, Provenance of Shadows fits in with these. Though it was written to be separate, I'd rather like it to be included.)

But that's neither here nor there, and my druthers little matter.

I dont post much...but would like to say that KRAD is one of my top two favorite Trek writers and have never been dissapointed with any of his work.

In fact, I bet KRAD is the only one who coudl bring back Data and make it plausable for me.

On a semi-serious side note...when will we see a Klingon "data"? I wonder what a Klingon android woudl be like...or even a Romulan..say if someone other than the Federation got a hold of Soong's schematics and could duplicate a positronic brain and make it function.
Just wonderin' :borg:

^ Again, I'm very sorry for appearing to malign KRAD's work. The quality of his efforts had nothing to do with my comments.

Wait, I thought he was being "funny"

So Articles of the Federation didn't sell well?

I thought that book was fantastic. I was really hoping for a sequel. Nan Bacco has to return if not in a sequel at least somewhere down the line. Great Character.

I loved it too. I was honestly hoping there'd be an AOTF II. The humor was great, the characters well drawn and realistic, everything. Every Star Trek writer brings something different and I enjoy that. I don't want a KRAD novel to read like a ATerri O novel or a Martin and Mangels novel nor a Mack novel, etc. All are different and all appreciated greatly. Thanks all.

Nope.

Thanks! Unfortunately, while it seems like everyone who bought the book loved it, not enough people bought it in the first place. I've already been told that a sequel won't be happening anytime soon.

To show how much I pay attention in here I had no idea AOTF didn't sell well, I loved the book both times I read it and was hoping for an AOTF Part Deux. Oh well.

Oh, and as for Data (must.. stay.. on topic), bringing him back wouldn't interest me unless we were to explore some of his early years besides what was in The Buried Age (another great read).

Cicero, Articles isn't being disregard, it's the furthest book forward in the timeline, so so far, no-one could reference a lot from it, cuz it hasn't happened yet.

People,

Well, since it looks like a resurrection of Data (of sorts) has already taken place in one of the SNW short stories, it's a bit of a moot point, eh? Of course, since it happened in a novel, it doesn't reeally count.

Frankly, I disliked how Data was killed off in NEM, but now that he's dead, he should stay that way on screen. The TNG relaunch novels should deal with how our heroes adjust to his death, esp. since without Data the walking encyclopedia, Picard and Co. are going to have to work hard to start remembering things!

Just remember, we have many TNG eps and novels dealing with Data that we can reread and rewatch.

I just wish he had never died in the first place.... I'd love to see him come back somehow, but I don't quite see how it could be achieved through B4... Wouldn't quite be the same.

Ah, crap! AOTF was an excellent read. I'd love to have read a sequel. Still, as the likes of Serenity or Superman Returns have shown, quality is no guarantee of success.

Our loss - but the real losers (meant in a non-insulting way, simply stating that they're losing out) are the people who haven't read AOTF.

I deffinitely agree with what everyone else has said about AOTF, it was IMO one of the best Trek books I've ever read. It really sucks it didn't sell well enough for a sequel, but if I had my way every Trek book would be on the NYT Best Sellers list, like some used to be.

No, it's not a moot point, since the novel authors don't have to pay attention to Strange New Worlds stories. And as has been stated, the novel line has already gone forward with the idea that B4 is *not* a replacement for Data.

^ Again, though, the novel line doesn't necessarily have to adhere to the continuity with everything written to be one of its components (regardless of quality); only direct sequels are by requirement restricted by their antecedents.

That's not to say that any books should be ignored, but as a point of fact, there's no requirement they be followed. If the author and editor of a new book chose to overlook a previous volume, they'd be perfectly able.

^ Afraid you're wrong there. For the last few years, Trek novels have adhered to inter-book continuity and consistency. That applies to different series of novels. As such, the Lost Era novels, recent TNG books, the DS9-R, the VOY-R, SCE, AOTF etc. etc are all consistent with each other.

So, until and unless an editorial decision to change that is taken, something set out in AOTF or any other novel will be applied in any other novel, whether or not it's a direct sequel.

Allowing, of course, for the movies to over-ride them. ButI think the chances of a post-NEM TNG movie (with or without Data) are slimmer than Patrick Stewart's hair at this stage ...
