The reason I think Defiant is my favorite Trek ship.....

It's a step towards making ships of war. They could have tweaked the larger ships for purely combative purposes. They probably would have it they had the budget.
I look at the Defiant as being a low maintenance ship that has 1/2 the power of a Galaxy class but probably costs 1/10th as much and requires a much smaller crew.
