The Real Life Superhero(s) Project (yes, it seems they do exist..)

Well, this is certainly very interesting:):

With heroic names like Life, KnightVigil, the Crimson Fist and Thanatos, the subjects of photographer Peter Tangen's latest project might sound like new and exciting additions to the Justice League, or members of a new superteam spinning out of the Avengers. In fact, these and other heroes are members of a community that patrol the streets of New York City , Atlanta and Vancouver to give aid to the homeless, mentor at-risk youth and perform other charitable deeds - in real life. "The Real Life Superhero Project" is a collection of portraits, videos and movie-style posters created by Tangen and a team of volunteers, designed to celebrate the men and women who, for several distinct reasons and to many different effects, put on a costume in an effort to improve lives in their communities.

So, it seems there is some real costumed heroes/heroines out there:techman:..what do you think about these guys and gals:)?
They certainly seem to work for a good cause in many of the cases but im sure many think they are just..well, nuts.
Though, does it really matter how one dresses, while doing charity?
And some of those costumes look very cool:cool:..these people should get a movie, TV-show..or at least an documentary made of them.
(I have to confess that I dont think this "Superhero thing" would work outside US and Canada.
Here in Europe they would most likely would get laughed out from the streets..sad, huh?
:shifty:)

This sounds really cool. I'll have to read up on it some more. I don't believe in vigilantism, but I do believe that we all need to take responsibility to fight crime.

That is great.

DC's Gaurdian
Clad in a striking uniform of red, white and blue, an intentional nod to another childhood influence, Captain America, DC patrols the metro area of our nation’s capitol, dispensing pocket copies of our Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence, as a reminder of all we stand for as a nation. But before he put this uniform on, he traveled the globe in that of the U.S. military. “I saw what the world was really like, the good and the bad, and realized that America has a lot to offer—if its people stand up for the foundation it was built upon.”

:bolian:

I think this is fantastic.

Are they nuts? Well, let's consider that. The definition of "nuts" means deviating from the norm. In our society, the norm is to be a trivial drone, conforming to the lowest common denominator, accepting, and even defending, the laziness and low standards that define pop culture, looking the other way when people in need call for help, taking a step back in the hopes that someone else will take responsibility, adopting a pose of chic cynicism rather than taking a stand for idealism and risk being mocked by fearful throwbacks, bowing to mediocrity instead of standing up for greatness, and generally taking the easy way out.

So, yes, these people are nuts. Wonderfully, gloriously nuts.

This is the kind of insanity that will save the world.

What is funny is I wear a Superman T and I look nothing like the Man Of Steel...unless he let himself go and shaved his head...and people always call me Superman. Even though they may have seen me in the shirt once or twice.

[edit] I wish I was making a difference. :(

I agree. For an alternative, cynical view, check out this blog on the irrationality of heroism.

Booster Gold
Booster Gold is a fictional character, a superhero in publications from DC Comics. Created by Dan Jurgens, he first appeared in Booster Gold (vol. 1) #1 (February 1986) and has been a member of the Justice League, DC Comics' all-star team of heroes. The character is initially depicted as a glory-seeking showboat from the future, using knowledge of historical events and futuristic technology to stage high-publicity heroics. Booster develops over the course of his publication history and through personal tragedies to become a true hero weighed down by the reputation he has created for himself.

They should have added him...taking shots at Superman, Batman & Spider-Man?

That was wonderfully put. :):techman:

Interesting, but do they really walk around with those masks on? A few of them would scare the shit out of the people they are trying to help surely.

^^ Only the criminals, because they are a cowardly and superstitious lot.

whatever makes the world a better place is ideal to me. if this project actually works out as intended, then i'm all for it.

Well, you're in luck! : ) My book about RLSH's, "I, Superhero," is available for preorder on Barnes & Noble and Amazon (print or Kindle editions) now! In it, I extensively interview and even go on patrol with a number of RLSH's (and villains).
