The Raven (2012)

Saga

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
trailer for this came out today. looks like it will incorporate elements from various Poe stories like The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell Tale Heart, The Masque of the Red Death, The Premature Burial, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. thoughts on the trailer?

I like John Cusack, but shouldn't Poe be more, well...consumptive? Alcoholic? Shouldn't his lady love be also consumptive and about 14 years old? Shouldn't this story be more gloomy, moody and broody and less QUICK!!! CUTS!!! ARGH!!!

The movie I want to see could probably never be made. :rommie:

Ah, yes, a hard-ass, kick-ass, gun-totin,' Edgar Allen Poe. :rommie:

It does remind me of the Downey Holmes movie. And the snippets of dialogue sound anachronistically modern.

Sigh. :sigh:

Oh, here's a link for anyone interested.

I'm looking forward to this, even if Cusack isn't at all how I've ever pictured Poe. :)

What's odd about the trailer is how much Cusack is backgrounded and Luke Evans' police constable is foregrounded, which leads me to theorize that Evans may be involved with the murders and he's engaging in a battle of wits with one of his favorite authors.

Not to be confused with the Boris Karloff film, or the other Boris Karloff film . . . . :)

I made the mistake of renting that once as something fun to watch on Halloween. My boyfriend/significantotherperson has still not let me live that one down and invariably mentions it every time I want to rent a movie.

So I'm definitely going to drag him to see this movie. :rommie: I won't tell him the title till we're already at the theater.

.

I'm curious. Did you rent the 1935 version with Karloff and Lugosi, or the 1963 version with Karloff and Vincent Price?

Which have completely different plots, btw.

Karloff and Price. The beginning was so damn silly that we got maybe 20 minutes through it, so whatever the plot was, I never found out.

Ah. The Raven (1935) has Lugosi as a crazed, Poe-obsessed surgeon and Karloff as his hideously disfigured henchman. By contrast, The Raven (1963) is a campy horror spoof about dueling wizards (written by Richard Matheson, no less).

None of which has anything to do with the new Cusack movie, granted, but I'm just amused that we're going to end up with three Poe-themed movies with the same title--but completely different plots!

Too bad they can't work Karloff into the new movie somehow, just to keep up the streak. :)
