The RAM crisis and the PC apocalypse

PC building influencers are also to blame; "You need a Geforce x090 and 128 DDR ram to play games!"...
No you dont, especially if you play on 1K or 2K resolutions...

Nope, CCD is the part of the (AMD) chip where the actual CPU cores are located, Core Complex Die, AMD CPU's are chiplet designs, besides CCD's they also have an IO die and on some APU's a seperate grfx die, also the 3DV cache is another die that gets fitted underneath the CCD, so to get a 16 core CPU they put two CCD's in one CPU, want only 8 then only one CCD is fitted, have a big Epyc CPU then stuff for example 4 CCD's onto you CPU for 32 cores and 64 threads.
it's very cost effective, Epyc and Ryzen CCD's are all the same so no (expensive) different design for lower end and higher end CPU's.

OK my bad I thought you mistyped CCD as in Charged Couple Devices

And here I thought you meant CCD in terms of camera sensors and here I am wondering what that had to do with PCs :D

That has always annoyed me. Of course, part of it is that they're sometimes given stuff to promote, but the average person simply is not going to be pushing their PCs that hard. Heck, I'm still just using a 1080p monitor and it's as good and as big as I want it for the time being. I just don't have the room on my desk for something larger.

It reminds me of the recent controversy surrounding the October W11 update that corrupted some SSDs due to a bug, and I was watching one video in which the guy was trying to explain it could be triggered by playing something that quickly streams textures to the cache like a racing game, and I'd wondered at what resolution he was playing at. On top of this, it was revealed the influencers experiencing the bug were on pre-release drivers. Again, most people won't ever have access to those.

Ditto. My "gaming" pc is rather old at this point, but plays most of the games i want to play at 1080p just fine - it's still an FX chip.

Some of the newer games I want to play will probably be problematic at best though I'm in no rush for those.
(My daily driver is even older and slower, but does everything I need)

My last PC had tech from 2011 and I had to stick to fairly simple stuff if I wanted to game on it, and stuff like Steam and GOG were even a hindrance, so I know the feeling. When I was looking into getting a new PC, I just wanted something capable. Didn't have to be high-end, but I knew whatever I'd get would be leagues better than what I was replacing. Just having the security of knowing you're in a good place was relief enough.

When it comes to 4K, most of it can be looked at in terms of bandwidth. A capable PC of course needs to be beefy, but even streaming 4K media requires a lot on the backend, which is why Streaming services upsell it, and good luck via coaxial broadcast. It took an eternity for our local network TV station to get to proper 1080p, and there were only ever a handful of 2K broadcast channels, because it can be expensive on the backend just as much as it takes to produce said content. Canada gave up on 2K due to the costs involved.

I bought a laptop that was supposed to replace my desktop pc but I can't seem to bring myself around to use it for a few days at a time.

So what I end up doing is bring it out once a month to update it, use it for a couple of days, then pop it back into the cupboard.

It's just this silly thing I feel like I'm losing an old friend If I fully commit to using the laptop full time.

I mean that is silly isn't it?

Get a docking station.

Not really. I think it depends on the lifestyle. I used to have a Macbook I used for video editing and I'd only bring it out when I needed to do some edits.

One advantage I like with Desktops over Laptops is from an air circulation standpoint. Laptops are manufactured for portability, and the form factor doesn't allow for much in the way of air circulation, especially as they're only getting thinner. With a desktop or tower, there's more room for airflow.

And dust... Although to be fair thats a problem for laptops as well.

I agree with this.

I've had my laptop overheat and shutdown on me. They don't adequately cool while gaming.
