The Quickest Path to "Star Trek: Picard"?

Comedy wise have you ever checked out COMMUNITY
I worked in a Community College for four years as an A/V Technician. I watched one episode of Community and thought, "That isn't right, that isn't right, no that's not accurate... " It drove me nuts.

Parks & Recreation is a good comedy.

My condolences.
Corrected the typo... and thanks!

I thought I'd seen the last of that show when I moved out in the early-2000s. But no, there's no escape!

Anyway, Trek. "Arsenal of Freedom" is one of my favorite TNG episodes from Season 1. So, it's going on the list. Another one I'm adding is "Attached". Another big Picard/Crusher episode. Have those in there, and it'll make the argument Picard and Crusher have in PIC Season 3 feel a lot more two-sided.

One of the main reasons I like Picard/Crusher in PIC better than Kirk/Marcus in TWOK. In TWOK, it's heavily tilted towards Kirk because he's the character we know. We never saw Carol Marcus before that movie. Whereas in PIC, we'd already gotten to know both Picard and Beverly Crusher in TNG.

"What?! TWOK is sacred!" Yes, I know. TWOK is my favorite Star Trek movie too. But that's one of the things, among some others, where I thought Picard actually handled it better.

EDITED TO ADD: "Suspicions" as well. To show Crusher's independent streak.

For Dr. Crusher specific, I think "Ethics" might be a good one. It shows how much has changed from her "do no harm at almost all costs" way of thinking to the gun-toting phaser firing soldier she ended as. Though that one may skew too much as a Worf episode than Beverly. "The High Ground"?

Next up is Picard himself.

"Where No One Has Gone Before" --> Picard's mother, among other things.
"The Battle" --> Because of the Stargazer.
"The Measure of a Man" --> Picard standing up for Data, introducing Bruce Maddox, and it's a classic.
"Q Who" --> Introduces the Borg.
"Allegiance" --> As was mentioned before. Some interesting scenes between Not-Picard and Beverly.
"The Best of Both Worlds" --> Obviously
"Family" --> BOBW Aftermath, the Vineyard, Picard's family, and the hologram of Jack Crusher.

"The Drumhead" --> Picard fighting for justice and standing up to basically the 24th Century Joe McCarthy. It also helps to show how big of a deal Elnor being admitted into the Academy will be, since Tarsus was crucified for even being part Romulan and he felt compelled to hide it.

"Tapestry" --> Insight into Picard as a young man. Also emphasizes that Picard was part-artificial (or should we say part-synthetic?) even back then. Gets right to the heart of it. ;)

"All Good Things" --> Obviously.

I feel like I'd also want to add in "The Inner Light" and "Lessons".

Feel free to add to this.

I managed to put together a list of 35 stories, including three movies, that I think set up all of the important elements later to be found in PIC. I feel like I could have included a couple more, but I was trying to keep it as brief as possible; I think even 35 episodes of homework would be more than the average new viewer would want to go through. Still...

I think this list is almost perfect, though we have to add Star Trek (2009) or at least Spock's mindmeld scene, to explain the Hobus supernova and why the Romulan evacuation is necessary.

Just the one scene. We don't normally do Comic Book Movies, and that's what Star Trek (2009) feels like.

Though I think Picard does a pretty good job of explaining things on its own terms. So, I'd rather just stick to that.

Yeah, I have ST09 in my personal, much longer list, but like I said, the assignment was to keep it as brief as possible. It's also true that PIC explains what's going on well enough on its own.

Haha, that is my exact reaction to SNW... but this isn't the alt universe thread :)

And, getting location shooting wrong set in countries I've been to gets to me, so I understand where you've coming from.

If it helps, Greendale Community College is very much not how a community college should operate, and they recognize it in universe.

It's the Romulan Supernova. Hobus is non-canon.

Indeed I appreciate this has been 'soft retconned' to be the star at the centre of the Romulus/Remus star system, and there wasn't any massively contradicting evidence for this on screen, but perhaps that star is still called 'Hobus'. There's no contradicting evidence for that, either :rommie:

I think I’ll also add in “Attached” episode from season 7 of TNG — I just listened to the commentary with Gates McFadden and she specifically name checked the episode as one of the things top of mind for Beverly when she made her decision re: Jack.

This is an interesting question actually. I recall coming up with a list during the run up to season 1, before we knew really what would happen in the show, but I can't seem to find it now.

I think this is a solid list. There's a few that you could probably skip over if you really wanted to (I'm not sure several episodes just for Wesley's backstory is necessarily needed), but I think it's good as is. The only major exclusion is Star Trek 2009, as others have said, and *maybe* some of the late DS9 stuff dealing with S31 and what they did with the changlings. I think it's important to know, but I'm not sure how understandable it would be without 7 seasons of the the show.
