The Punisher-- Marvel/Netflix

I can't argue about whether Rashomon is important or not, I don't know and I don't care. I certainly won't watch it. But, it existing doesn't mean the gimmick it uses isn't terrible

Well. I'm not saying that Mahoney is such a well-established presence that he should be immediately identifiable to all audience members, but he is certainly a character that has been given a definite arc and growth in the Netflix series. I recognized him immediately both here and in Jessica Jones.
Right, same. He's not exactly a lead character but he's been around enough that if you follow all of the shows (or, honestly, just Daredevil and now this) he should at least stop and make you think for a second.

I was actually surprised they didn't find a way to fit him into The Defenders, maybe as part of the same task force Misty Knight had by then joined.

I tend to not like any of the "most influential movies ever made". I mean, Citizen Kane wasn't terrible (it was ok, but just ok), but I'm definitely not into the kinds of movies most critics gush over. Older stuff that may be important from a technical perspective tends to be boring to watch (with a few exceptions, but none of them are foreign films about murder/rape with irritating gimmicks). I can't argue about whether Rashomon is important or not, I don't know and I don't care. I certainly won't watch it. But, it existing doesn't mean the gimmick it uses isn't terrible or that it the gimmick didn't ruin an episode of The Punisher.
You know, until this moment I was convinced that everyone is entitled to his opinion.

No more.

You are too kind. :(

This gif is utterly wasted on him too.

It's statistically more likely he hasn't seen daylight in the past 365 days than taken the opportunity to see that comic masterpiece.

Keep it relevant.

I'm also surprised that he hasn't seen the trope used in TV before. The Rashomon effect is so ubiquitous that I'm surprised an Exec out there hasn't commissioned a cop or lawyer show revolving solely around the trope.

Off the top of my head the X-Files, Farscape, Frasier, MASH, ER, Smallville, Veronica Mars, Power Rangers, My Name is Earl, TNG, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, How I Met Your Mother... all used the trope to differing effects.

I'll admit that the transition between account 1 and 2 left me jarred for a second, but the simple segues to the interview process made it apparent what was going on

I’m cracking up here seeing people argue with no one. The ignore feature is fabulous.

I have no idea what the gif is from, but I could figure out what it meant just by looking at it. But, I think in general the average person hasn't seen a random B&W film in 2017. Because its 2017 and we have a huge amount of good to amazing movies that came out since B&W went away that are a lot more interesting then the generally slow, poorly acted (as a general rule, there were a few decent actors but the style was just bad back then it barely matters) films of the first couple of decades of films existence. There are some B&W gems (I personally love the old Universal Monster films), but its ridiculous to act like someone nowadays not having seen some film that came out probably 40-50 years before they were born is unusual or bad. Its like saying I'm a bad reader because I can't read The Illiad. Things can be historical and/or important but still not be enjoyable to a lot of the modern audience (like how I loathe literally every Shakespeare thing, but acknowledge its important stuff).

Also, I see daylight every day, but nice lazy insult.

Having seen all of MASH, Smallville and Fraiser, 90% of TNG and a good chunk of the various PR series I can't remember them using the trope. I mean, I could definitely see one of the really shit MASH episodes doing it (I love that show, especially the post-Henry Blake seasons which I'm generally in the minority in loving, but there were some stinkers), same with Smallville. There are also so many PR episodes it definitely could have happened, and I can almost see fraiser using it. Farscape might have, but that is a show where I love two seasons (1 and 3), think pone season is barely watchable (Season 2) and literally rage quit season 4, so there is a good chance I either would have missed an episode like that or just never saw it.

But, all of that doesn't mean the gimmick isn't shit. Good shows can do stupid things. Heck, I think The Punisher is a generally good show, it just had a bad episode. In the end, its all my opinion. I'm also not judging some random old movie I'd never watch and literally don't care about.

You're absolutely right in one respect: "Old" does not equal "good." There are plenty of old movies that were awful, just as there are plenty of awful movies that get released every month nowadays.

That being said, your absolute refusal to engage with material because it was made before the 1980s or whatever, your refusal to engage with actual, literal history, and your absolutely ignorant stance of sticking your head in the sand and screaming LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU GIVE ME MORE POWER RANGERS, is just repulsive. You have absolutely no credibility whatsoever; you're about as reliable as someone whose reading experience consists of Garfield comics and then screams "shut up, I don't care" when it's pointed out that you're basically eating dog food.

I feel no shame about what I like. I've never tried to hide what I enjoy. I'll watch Power Rangers any day, but trying to watch some popular adult thing like Breaking Bad was like getting an icepick to the temple. I like a lot of stuff not made for my demographic while disliking a lot of things popular to my age group and older. You really can't shame me about that, its one of the few things about myself that I'm completely happy with. I mean, I can get defensive when people insults certain things, but I'm comfortable with my personal enjoyment of certain things that people consider stupid.

So, yeah. Give me Power Rangers, or Sentai, Kamen Rider, Godzilla, etc over stuff like Rushomon any day of the week. They're not high art, but I don't like most "high art" anyway. I've watched a bunch of Godzilla films, but I got literally 3 minutes into Seven Samurai before I tapped out. I'm not saying the Goidzilla films are the objectively superior product in that situation, its just what I like better.

As for credibility, I'm no more or less credible then anyone. I'm not making objective comments on the quality of ancient films, in fact I keep acknowledging that those things probably do have a lot of historical value. I'm only commenting on my personal enjoyment of things, and I don't care if people get all snobby towards me because of certain things I like.

Also, because I feel like it,

I feel like paraphrasing Mike Royko, here: It is entirely within your right to feel that way. It is also my right to call you a barbarian.

You don't get to say that when you've said "probably shitty."

Edit: Also lawllllll at "Rashumon."

It's worth mentioning that the guy who directed most of the early Godzilla films and the guy who directed Rashomon were good friends and frequent collaborators. Ishiro Honda worked as an assistant director for Akira Kurosawa on several films (not including Rashomon) before becoming a director himself.

And its my right to disregard the opinions of people who go that route. I do have a big dislike for people who get snobby about stuff. To be clear, not liking things I like or liking "fancy" stuff doesn't make a person snobby, its actively attacking people for liking stuff they feel "inferior" that decides if what someone says is snobby.

I could have specified "in my opinion". I would hate it and consider it a shitty film. That is not an objective opinion.

I honestly don't care enough to get the name right. I typed what came to mind, even if the spelling is wrong.

So Sarah is like: Husband just got shot and fell into river, so he must be dead, no reason to look for his body. Empty casket will be fine for funeral.

Not buying it.

So the whole show is based on a group of gov'ment folk smuggling drugs to pay for the shenanigans of a hit squad, and this news nugget has to be kept secret because the public will have a tweetstorm or something? No wait, careers will be ended—golden parachuting into Happy Retirement Land.

A few episodes left, and thinking this could have been summed up in an hour and a half movie.

What on earth makes you think she didn't want his body retrieved? You want an entire extra scene of the police saying 'we couldn't find him' just to plug a 'hole' that should've been blindingly obvious to start with?

Also, power hungry aholes are power hungry. More at 11.

Dead bodies have been found in murkier waters. Not finding one should lead to suspicion.

Everything about how he died should lead to suspicion. And she clearly was suspicious. That doesn't mean she has any power to do anything about it - nor that she would want to do so, considering the risk it would put her children in.

I finished Punisher this past Sunday night and really, really enjoyed the whole thing.

Nitpicks aside I felt they captured Frank perfectly. Micro with a family made for an interesting dynamic and his character was the most afield from what I recall of 90's Micro.

I like that the series wrap up in such a way that if we don't get a S2, real world mergers, pull out of Netflix etc, that it ends in a conclusion. I hope we get more but I'm very unsure of when that could be.
The slate is full for 2018 Marvel shows I do believe.
Jessica Jones S2 is done and in post
Luke Cage S2 is filming
Daredevil S3 is filming
Iron Fist S2 is in pre-production

At one release per Quarter, which would be more than they've ever done, I don't see Punisher S2 happening for 2018. It would, it seems, have to debut on the new Disney Platform in 2019.
