There are other forums out there, of course, but most are of a narrower focus with regard to subject matter. I've been to MANY of these kinds of forums over the years and none seem to have the breadth and depth of conversation that TrekBBS has. The only one that ever came close, IMO, was the TOS BSG site "Ship of Lights", that died a very untimely death 10 or 15 years ago. The user base talked about more than just BSG and there was a super-rare nonpartisan understanding and tolerance between fans of both shows (TOS and RDM's NuBSG) I only ever otherwise found here (only because, I think, it wasn't a primary topic of conversation at TBBS). I was very sorry to see it go, and I will be very sorry to see TrekBBS go if it looses support from its user base from this advertising snafu.

This thread was one of the most interesting in terms of 3D renderings that I've seen on this forum-- or anywhere else --in a while. I'm disappointed that Mackoifish left here and that I may never see his works again. (I am not part of the other forums he mentioned.) If this is because of blocking pop-up ads, or some alleged security risk that's been mentioned here, I'm very concerned. I hope that's not the case. I have noticed some weird things on here in the last year or so, like ads that start playing loud music or other presentations and I can't figure out where they are coming from. If this is a serious issue, I would ask the site admins to address it immediately. Honestly, I am not trying to stir the pot. I am simply concerned.

I've never gotten a pop up ad and I don't use a blocker. What he probably was doing was using a blocker in general that blocks all ads when he surfs including that small, unobtrusive one at the very bottom of the forum page and got a warning pop up because of the blocking. While I think he makes some great ships, having a hissy fit and taking your ball home because they want you to see one ad on the bottom of the page is childish IMO (but completely within his rights to do so). This is a free forum and the owners keep it free and running by paying for the expenses with ads. Would he rather they charge him for a mandatory membership? Sorry but I've been on forums that were ruined by advertising (top banner ads, bottom banners, vertical side ads, and even midpage banner ads between posts) and this forum's single ad waaaay at the bottom is perfectly acceptable. He should have instead added this forum url to the list of exceptions on his ad blocker.

Single ad?? Try about 4, bottom, side, top right, top.

Right...And they all have a server to contact, so it has slow down the site a lot. Maybe Sitzkrieg you are talking about a specific page, but most of us enter by the default index page. Deviant Art in comparaison has only 2 ads on their pages, and they are specific...no managed by a cookie advertiser.

If you look at the screenshot madkoifish posted, Adblocker WAS disabled on his browser and the site STILL threw up that block message. That's what upset him. He was doing his part by turning it off and the site still wouldn't let him in. He even drew an arrow pointing out on the screenshot that adblocker was disabled.

And no, it's on average 4 ads a page at all times for me at home with adblock not running. The only time I get just one is when I'm at work and the proxy servers block everything else.

Sorry, for some reason on the device I was using it only had on ad on the bottom. Right now I do indeed have four ads. I still think though his reaction was out of proportion to the inciting event. I wasn't aware of the significance of the little arrow as I don't use any blockers.

I like his artwork. I'm really bummed he's gone. It would've been neat to see if he did anything more with his pseudo-Discovery. Too bad.
