The Prime Directive

In TOS where, say our heroes seek to divert an asteroid heading toward a planet.

And in 100 years, that diverted asteroid destroys a different civilization.

The law of unintended consequences is a strong argument for the Prime Directive, IMHO.

Of course, the flip side is that simply being present changes things. Exploring, recording, taking samples of things...

If they really wanted to never interfere with anything, they'd never leave space dock.

It's truly complicated, and the times they explore those complications are better than simply declaring absolutes.

Here is a thought Robert Beltran who played Chakotay...

He(Robert Beltran) even rails against the show's "Prime Directive," a guiding principle that prohibits Starfleet characters from interfering with the development of alien civilizations.

"The idea of leaving any species to die in its own filth when you have the ability to help them, just because you wanna let them get through their normal evolutionary processes is bunk -- it's a bunch of fascist crap," he said. "I much prefer the Cub Scout motto." (The Cub Scout motto, by the way, is about doing your best and helping others.)

Please take some time to review the rules of posting here, pinned at the top of this forum. Specifically the one regarding resurrecting dead threads. If it hasn’t had a response in over a year, start a new thread instead.

This one’s been dead over three years, so let’s let it Rest In Peace, shall we?

Thanks!
