I've always thought of Kirk as "Reason", tempering McCoy's "Passion" and Spock's "Logic".
That seems to go along with the whole Id, Ego and Superego idea...I've always thought of Kirk as "Reason", tempering McCoy's "Passion" and Spock's "Logic".

You seem to see the id as a bad thing - it's not. Like we saw inThat seems to go along with the whole Id, Ego and Superego idea...I've always thought of Kirk as "Reason", tempering McCoy's "Passion" and Spock's "Logic".
I disagree, passion is a relative thing and is by no means exclusive to the baser instincts or your secret perversions. You can be passionate about human rights, art, even logic. Logic on the other hand can be corrupted quite easily if you make certain definitions. A good example of this is the holocaust. The nazis simply defined jews, slavs, homosexuals, disabled people etc. as being unworthy of living. Thus the logical thing to do was to kill them. Very much on the racist perverted id side of the psyche don't you agree?
Quite true. I can see that.I think what he means is that the problem comes when someone tries to define one of the elements - Id, Ego, Superego - in absolute, black-and-white terms. Reality is that there's a lot of grey area in each one that varies from person to person.
