The Phantom Menace 3D Release

As big a letdown as most of ATTACK OF THE CLONES was, I imagine seeing it in 3-D when it's re-released next year will make up for some of the second prequel's nagging shortcomings. The huge battle on Geonosis at the end of the movie is going to be amazing in 3-D. It kinda sucks that Lucas and 20th Century Fox are waiting an entire year between each film, but it sure beats the three-year wait between the movies when they were brand new.

So it is a year between releases? I have been wondering on the schedule.

I saw it today and really enjoyed and was very impressed with the 3D. My theater was having problems with their digital project. It started late and most of the previews had no picture and only sound. They fixed it by the time of the actual time. Everyone got free passes to make up for this. I am definitely seeing it again.

I saw it with a good friend, her daughter and her daughters' friends. We all dressed up. And one of the girls (all about 15) had never seen it. She really enjoyed it, which was interesting to hear. all in all it was a good time. The 3-D was very good and more subtle than I expected.

As I wind down and dabble in some screenwriting, I'm playing the blu-ray version of the film - wherein the picture looks far better than the effective 3-D version..but I still liked the 3-D ... and I'm listening to Plinkett's feature commentary for the film rather than the audio. Mostly, he's just rambling, and it's quite funny. "There should have been a scene in Episode 3 where Anakin breaks into a retirement home to kill a bunch of oldlings!"

The film annoyingly isn't playing close to me and the theaters that are playing it are playing it mid-day when I have a doctor's appointment. WTF theaters?

Edit: Rather, WTF website? My newspaper says it's playing all around but the Yahoo! website puts it in only two theaters. Bastards are trying to trick me!

BoxofficeMojo estimates TPM 3D made $8.65 mil. on its opening day, which would mean its lifetime gross climbed to $439,7 million, bumping it above E.T.'s 435 mil. (#7 on the all-time unadjusted domestic chart). TPM it's now only $1.5 mil. shy of Shrek 2's domestic gross.

Episode I is certain to overtake ANH at number 4 spot ($461 mil.), and it will be interesting to see if it could challenge The Dark Night's insane 533 million at #3.

Personally, I don't believe it will, but the 500 million mark looks like a sure thing.

The adjusted-for-inflation chart is still the more interesting one, IMO. Gone With The Wind remains lonely on top with 1.58 billion, with ANH at number two with 1.39 billion.

I wonder if ANH 3D has a shot at making 190 million and overthrowing GWTW. It seems highly unlikely now, but still, it's three full years away.

Here's a choice excerpt: The super-cool thing for George Lucas to have done would have been to convert this fan-generated trimmed version of “Phantom Menace” into 3D.

Ha ha no. As Michael Caine said in Inception, come back to reality.
OK, I guess most of those fan edits aren't really done on a pro level, but to be honest, a 10-minute shorter, official re-edited version (the one without "There was no father", for example) would have been a winner.

That's absurd. "There was no father" is part of the story. Taking that out means throwing out a significant part of the story just because some people can't handle it. What about everyone else?

I don't think I'd ever want anything taken out. The closest would be midichlorians but I've decided that Qui-Gon was shitting Anakin.

EDIT: Actually, I'd take Jake Lloyd out and cast the part older.

Going tonight! Can't wait! I don't know if I'll luck out and receive any free 3D glasses that I get to keep, but it's all good. I don't really care that much. I'm just stoked that a STAR WARS movie is back on the big screen after almost seven years.

Anyone ever watch the Making of docu on the Phantom Menace DVD? Where it shows the screentests of the final three kids in the pipe line for playing Anakin (obviously one is Jake Lloyd.) One is even more cutesy wutesy than JL is, but every time I watch that I think Lucas would have been better of casting the other kid. Ha, he seemed better to me anyway!

I do wonder if Lucas saw Jingle All The Way before casting Lloyd? ;)

Edit- found it here (the Finding Anakin part anyway) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZSnB7yGylc

As shoddy as some of Jake Lloyd's acting was, at least the kid managed to inject some spirit and personality into Anakin Skywalker. When Hayden Christensen took over the role he turned Anakin into the whiniest and most wooden Jedi this side of the Outer Rim. Jake did the best he could for an elementary school kid with limited acting experience. Most child actors his age aren't that refined or talented. Hayden Christensen is another story altogether.

Remember when there was serious talk that James Van Der Beek was in the running for the role of adult Anakin? I wonder what would have happened if The Dawson had been cast as the future Darth Vader. The creek would have been in for some deeeeeep shit.

They really should have cast someone older in Episode 1 and continued with the same actor.

It's a shame that Anakin from the Clone Wars is a billion times closer to how Anakin should have been portrayed in the films.
