The Parralel Lives of Harry Kim.

hux

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
In one reality, Kim is shacked up with Libby on Earth and drinking latte's. (Non-Sequitor).

In another reality, he's screwing Tom's daughter (oh Harry... how could you?) and has the world's most tedious son (now a drag queen i believe). (Before and After)

In another reality, he's dead floating around in space. (Deadlock)

In another, he's exhausted and fixing a battered and bruised Voyager (Year of Hell).

In another, he's a bitter and twisted, guilt ridden outlaw trying to change history (Timeless).

In another, he's a silverblood lifeform (but still pretty incompetent) (Course Oblivion).

And finally, in one reality, he's captain of the USS Rhode Island (but Janeway scuppered that) (Endgame)

My favourite Harry was the dead one floating in space.

That alternate reality would be inferior because no Space Pants Wang

What about the version who spends his days locked up in a sex dungeon in a gimp mask being spanked? He sounded slightly more interesting than the others I must admit.

That Kim is busy in the company of a man known only as Big Gary.

Plus, that Kim exists less in an alternate reality and more in the twisted mind of a dirty bastard.*waves*

hooks, you never met Mirror Universe Karry Him ehm Harry Kim

who tortured Libby to death

 This attempt to make Harry more evil went awfully wrong.

He just led all of these various experiences so he would have more stories to tell Mommy and Daddy when he got home.:)

This one time, at band camp, Harry stuck his clarinet up his :censored:.

My favourite Harry was the dead one floating in space.
I was sort of sorry how they resolved that one. The death scene was actually pretty good.

Don't forget Space Pirate Harry from the fan film Of Gods and Men!

Didn't actually realise he'd lived *that* many lives in Voyager. Poor guy seemed unhappy in the lot of them.

Poor Harry! The weakest character and the whipping boy of the show.

Still I like him. Not my favorite character but I like him in a way.

He did have potential and in the books he's actually doing more than in the series. Unfortunately the whipping boy synndrome follows him in the books too where he ends up in sickbay in many of them.

A good side-kick to Tom on some occasions, both in the series and in the books.

I would have loved to see him coming home to his parents, shocking them by telling how he actually died in "Deadlock" and telling them he was a duplicate. Then he would start jumping around in the room, belting out the old Runaways classic "Cherry Bomb" with other lyrics:

"Hello Mum, Hello Dad, I'm your d-d-d-d-duplicate son!"

Now that would have been funny! :techman:

I don't understand all the hate on Harry either. Every show seems to have a "whipping boy" as you call it.

Actors can only do so much with so little, his best performance on voyager was Timeless where they actually gave him a plot that did not revolve around his nieve nature.

I don't know why Timeless didn't change things up more. I thought he did well enough in Course Oblivion and Memorial but your mileage may vary of course. He had that awful 'The Disease' but there wasn't a lot to work with there. I'm in the neutral corner when it came to Nightengale. Its not a favorite but at the same time I don't skip it.

I believe that the official trope designation of Harry Kim is "Butt Monkey" (like Mr Scott, Geordi, and Miles O'Brien before him).

I always liked Harry and I felt he was mistreated on the show. He should have been promoted to Lieutenant at least by the end of Season 3. I have ready somewhere that Rick Berman really did not like Garrett Wang for some strange reason. Everything I have ever read about the actor makes him sound like a pleasant and likable person.

I think it is interesting how Garrett's life parallels Harry's: they both work hard and do a good job, but still most people seem to hate them.

I agree. He may have been the least talented actor on the show, but I found that he definitely added to the family atmosphere and I enjoyed his contributions. Mostly. One does also have to concede that he was probably a slim runner-up to Roxann Dawson in the smooth and seamless recitation of technobabble!!:)

I second this. Although I kinda liked their plan to x him in Scorpion. Not that I dislike Harry, I was actually sad when I thought he was sucked into space for good.

IMO most of, if not all of, the characters in Voyager that were badly handled were due to the writers screwing up rather then the actors.

Look at Neelix. Most of the time IMO he's the most annoying character on the show but when the writers are treating him like a clown he's decent. Or Chakotay who spent far too much time as a mix of every Native American tribal cliche known to man. Harry could have been much better if given growth by the writers but got stuck as the eternal fresh from training kid.

I can't think of any reason to consider his acting worse than any of the other main players. When he was given stuff to do he was as good as the best of them. I'm on the last season of my rewatch and I'd say Harry Kim actually got more to do over the course of the series than Chakotay did.

I don't get the expectation of him being promoted honestly, it would have been nice but this is Star Trek, the kind of show where they keep the main cast pretty much static in their roles 95% of the time. It's not like TNG was promoting people left and right.

In The Next Generation, they promoted Geordi (2 ranks), Worf (1 rank), Deanna (1 rank), Wesley (1 rank), Nurse Ogawa (1 rank), and some others that I can't remember. That feels like a lot of promotions. :)

When Lore asks Data if he can have a uniform like his, Data says something about "Spend 2 years as an Ensign ...". That makes it really rough for poor Harry. :(
