The Over 40s Club Meeting

Sadly, this year puts me officially in to the "over-40" group.

When I was a youngster, I clearly remember loving Kimba, but frankly, all I remember is the title and that it was cartoon.

I have much clearer memories of The Banana Splits, The Monkees, The Mod Squad, Room 222 and all the Hanna Barbera cartoons. I also liked all the educational shows like Vegetable Soup, Electric Company and Zoom.

Banana Splits

Ohh you evil woman...

That damn Tra La La song is stuck in my brain..
you really ought to have a disclaimer up for potental mental
damage from exposure to the Banana Splits opening...

no sleep for me...:p

Lawrence Welk (urk)

My mom liked watching Lawrence Welk reruns 20 years ago. My brother does an excellent impression of Lawrence, which made the show bearable, because I spent the entire show killing myself laughing at his impressions ("It's-a Bobby and-a Sissy. Today Bobby let-a Sissy wear de skirt. Wunnerful, wunnerful!").

Ever hear Robin Williams do one? "Tank you tank you, less all get down and get funky. And now de lovely Lemon sisters gonna sing 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction'. Tank you for dat lovely tüne, dat funky musik, gonna drive us till de dawn. Let's go, let's a-boogaloo till we puke!" :guffaw:

Somebody just guessed i was 30 years old today. I was very pleased...

I liked the Herculoids!! I saw it in reruns of course cause I am not THAT old!!

Thundarr was cool.

^ We're guys, dude. We're supposed to want to sound OLDER. Like when I was in high school and I'd call in to radio stations and request songs* - they would always think I was older. But that was because of my ridiculously muddy deep bass voice, you know the kind - that sounds like a 45 rpm single being played at 33. :alienblush:

* Talk about old stuff. Two words: ARMADILLO RACES.

When I was in my teens and 20s people thought I was older, now that I'm 40 I'm glad they think I look younger. :-)

I DO say "whippersnapper" a lot though!

I'm only 40, but I distinctly remember when I was a kid, all the phone numbers in the town where my grandparents lived, still had only 5 numbers.

I was going to link some stuff myself, but in browsing the thread, the majority of cartoon I recall as a kid in the late 1960ies early 1970ies in the U.S. were already linked with the exception of:

Earliest childhood memories: Saturday mornings, 6 AM, The Adventures of Superman!

And rushing home from school in time to catch Sea Hunt, five days a week!

I just bought S4 of Rocky and Bullwinkle.

But I *hated* Kimba. Actually, any cartoon that was preachy or goody-two-shoes put me into a stupor.

Give me Bugs Bunny or the Road Runner and Wile E Coyote any day!

Yes! To all of that, really.

I adore Rocky and Bullwinkle (season 4? woo-hoo - I have the first three seasons) and all their kindred, i.e., Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley Dooright, Mr. Peabody. But you can't go wrong with BB and friends of course.

And I agree about Kimba, too - and Caspar the Friendly Ghost and Wendy the Good Witch. They're just so, you know, gooshy.

You know, I never liked Felix the Cat or Popeye, either - I still watched them, though. Apparently there were times in my life when any cartoon was better than no cartoon? Sad.

^

Popeye is one of my favorite animated characters ever. The problem is that he was only good in the Fleischer cartoons (the first B&W ones are the best) and has been abused by every subsequent cartoon featuring him.

Wow! Lots of stuff:

There are others, but I've tried to recall the ones I watched most. Mind you I left out TOS which is the one that topped them all for me.

There were lots of great cartoons on when I was a kid in the 60s and early 70s, both the new ones on Saturday mornings and the reruns on Channel 56. Most of them have already been mentioned. The first Fantastic Four cartoon was probably my favorite; it was pretty true to the book. Kimba was another favorite-- I have that on DVD. Another favorite that few remember now was Here Comes The Grump-- also have that one on DVD. Then there were the cool adventure cartoons, like Journey To The Center Of The Earth and Fantastic Voyage (CMDF!). The Bullwinkle Show was a favorite. Another obscure favorite was QT Hush, which was on at lunchtime on the Captain Boston Show on Channel 56.

I could probably list a hundred of them. :rommie:

Wasn't that from Good Morning, Vietnam? I vaguely remember the boogaloo 'til we puke line.

Oooh, I just remembered - the original Mission: Impossible! (Before it was a stupid big-budget movie franchise.) I even remember the first season, when it was Mr. Briggs instead of Mr. Phelps. :)

I saw the guy who played the flute in the theme song, Sheridan Stokes, in concert in Santa Barbara a few years ago. It was fantastic when he played the theme in front of a full live orchestra!

And after Star Trek was canceled, Leonard Nimoy took over Martin Landau's job on the show. Paris wasn't as good a character as Rollin Hand, but it was still fun seeing him every week. What's funny is that apparently Martin Landau was the original choice for Mr. Spock, but he turned it down.

Ah, Mission: Impossible was a great show, and that's one of the all-time classic themes. It's a shame that, like Trek, it was dumbed down to popcorn-movie level.

Some others. Fun (and goofy) times! I still get a grin listening to some of these and remember how fun they were:

Wow, you guys and your vids caused my Flash player to crash! System hang! Haven't had that problem in years!

<swaps computers>

M:I, Batman VTTBOTS, LiS are among my favourites, but y'know, most of them are pretty good

This is one from my childhood - not the 1950s US one, but the 1960s UK one:
