THE ORVILLE S2, E9: "IDENTITY, PART II"

All the likely scenarios seem to point to robosexuality being the savior of the human race.

The possibility of an ongoing Kaylon war is possible, but I'd be curious how they justify Earth surviving the first wave without Isaac somehow helping. As far as we've seen so far, the difference between human and Kaylon strength is far greater than the difference between Federation and Dominion.

Though an ongoing Kaylon war would create an interesting story opportunity. It would force the Krill to ally with them.

Maybe Ed will try to trick the Krill into entering the war by creating a fake holo-recording of the Kaylon plotting their destruction, which they will realize is a FAAAAAKE!

I think Earth not surviving is a real possibility. It doesn’t mean humanity ends or the Union dies, as there are surely plenty of humans living off-world and other Union worlds. But it would certainly be a game changer as MacFarlane suggests and it would go against what Trek did in BOBW, First Contact, etc...

Making a regular character the big bad would be interesting but maybe too dark for Orville. They did it in Dark Matter.

Earth not surviving would make Orville a completely different show than it has been so far. Not saying they definitely won't, but I would be surprised. If they do that, it would mean Orville has decided not to be the light comfy TNG clone it has been so far.

TV shows in the past had longer teasers, which told more without spoiling anything. When a teaser tells very little, it's either hiding something massively big in its 49 minutes,or it's got nothing to say. So far, I'm thinking it's holding its cards and only because "The Orville" has innovated and expanded on sci-fi trope, with loveable characters. Like Galaxy Quest, only without flagrantly breaking the 4th wall. I refuse to believe the teaser is saying it's got nothing except generic flashy visuals, this isn't the new Doctor Who snooze hour.

Then I'll see the episode, nobody (especially Claire) gets out of bed citing "it was a simulation all along!", and decide from there. :D

A reset button would be worse than a simulation, and the people involved in the writing department did some of 90s Trek's most creative and successful storylines.

Part of me wonders if this does tie into the Krill running plot as well where they need to team up, assuming it's all not a simulation.

Can Isaac simply reset and reprogram itself so that the others can't get him and deactivate him yet again? That's like a computer choosing to alter its own BIOS or UEFI (think "brain surgery", just like with that DIY brain surgery kit you just bought last week from Krap-Mart.) The human crew already stated the only option for repair is to take him back to the proverbial dealership.

Or is Isaac to the Kaylon what Locar is to the Maclans, except Isaac's predicament is somewhat different? Seem bizarre that AI would develop self-awareness, think for itself, ditch the programming, teams up with Bender's shiny metal rear to kill all the humans, and then create a new set of programming for its self-proclaimed species' new society,

Also, on a planet with no trees, how come Mercer and crew could wander around without oxygen canisters? Byproduct of fumes emitting from all the robots like car exhaust? There is no logic for the Kaylons in creating an oxyginator, but then again they should have killed all the humans instead of shoving them aside to take their ship noting they were responsible for the extermination of billions of organic beings. So is there another chapter, another race not yet discussed in Kaylon lore and there's a big misunderstanding that will be genuinely epic? That seems far more likely, certainly more so than a simulation - though that's also better than taking the episode at face value and hoping for trite cliches to restore Isaac back to his old self and status quo by part two's conclusion. Assuming it's a conclusion. For all we know, Isaac may be out for a few more episodes, if not forever.

Am definitely looking forward to Thursday! I can only begin to guess but I'm hoping whatever they come up with isn't hokey or cliche. Which seems unlikely, the show has been first rate in most ways and I've not felt disappointed with any of the episodes so far. I can't believe the upcoming episode would be in any way a step backward.

I have a tough time thinking of a way that they could return to the status quo that would be dramatically satisfying. "Identity, Part II" could be the episode that makes or breaks The Orville.

I think proving the Kaylons aren't as superior as they claim to be may be the solution. They may have a technological advantage but they aren't invincible and have been shown they can be taken out by a Union laser rifle. If the Union has superior battle strategy than the Kaylons, that might show them that The Union isn't going to go down as easily as their creators did.

I see that many people guessing a simulation. Whatever the resolution is, I don't think Macfarlane will use something that has been done before. So I don't think it will be a simulation, or Kaylons getting a "sleep" command. Isaac somehow saving the day is possible though. It will be something creative, though not necessarily satisfying.

I am not so sure we will see a reset, at least not a quick one. The director says these episodes will change everything:

So maybe Kalons will be the big bad guys for a while, and Isaac becomes a recurring character. If he comes back to Orville it may take more than 1 episode.
So, the Orville gets a 24th century update to its Windows 10 OS? (That probably WILL change everything AND reset Issac if it doesn't BSoD him...AND end the simulation.;))

Honestly, I think they probably can repel Union weapons if they wanted to. They just didn't bother while boarding the Orville because they had the advantage of superior numbers anyway (a planet of billions of Kaylon vs 300 officers and crew on the Orville). Plus, it's a handy method of using up weapons energy, lessening the chance for future resistance and even has a bonus psychological aspect of giving the security officer false hope there is a chance to defeat them, which will make their ultimate defeat all the more damaging. Besides, for all we know, the Kaylon taken down could be repaired anyway, while the security officers are most certainly dead.

This reminds of the Best of Both Worlds talk in 1990. Back then we had no internet, but I remember reading the comments in Starlog magazine about what readers thought would happen after BOBW Part 1 in the fan mail section. Things like Q will stop the Borg, Patrick Stewart is leaving the show, etc.. That was a hard summer, waiting 3 months for the conclusion.

So, I was sitting in the script coordinator's office in the Hart building in the summer of 1990, all alone with my briefcase and staring at a stack of red-cover scripts titled "Best Of Both Worlds, Part II..."

What are the odds of the argument being used “You said you are better with me than without me. Maybe that means the Kaylon are better with us than without us.”

I give 2:1 odds of that and 4:1 odds Isaac uploads his memory of intimacy and sex to his whole race to convince them.

And 10:1 odds the porn virus is used somehow as a weapon.

That's a good question. When they talked about how they didn't pick up any transmissions directed toward the Orville after Issac was deactivated, that made me wonder if they were paying attention to how Issac was communicating with his homeworld.
