THE ORVILLE S2, E8: "IDENTITY, PART I"

Wow! What a great episode this one was really exciting for a cliffhanger. Great acting and lots of twists ans turns I certainly didn't expect. I can't wait to see part 2 next week.

I loved it. This one felt very much like an old science fiction comic brought to life.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the events of this episode prove not to have been a fantasy simulation initiated by the Kaylon scanning beam.

The "comic book" and other old sf inspirations of the series aren't commented upon nearly enough, because the Trek-derivative aspects are too explicit. The plots tend to be broad and simple and exaggerated. Visually, this episode had the vibe of 1950s Astounding Science Fiction and sf paperback cover art, as well as the comics of the day.

Agreed. It was good, but I wouldn't say ground breaking or stellar and, really a "twist" I saw coming back in S1. As far as "Earth is in danger from a cybernetic threat" cliffhangers go, BOBW wins hands down.

I really liked the episode and series, but this didn't floor me like it seems to have some people.
Yeah, I liked the episode but honestly nothing in it surprised me. Kalons being racist against biologicals was mentioned in the very first episode.

Well, STD has managed to recapture those second-season Enterprise levels of viewership, certainly. Fortunately, in the streaming landscape that's more than sufficient to keep a show going.

Are there reports about Discovery streaming data? I don’t buy the whole subscriptions are up solely because of Discovery because CBS has actually done a decent job putting things on the service and then you have the popularity of Survivor, Big Brother, That trial show, and that weekend they announced there was also the AFC championship game. I don’t doubt Discovery helped the subscription increase but there are more variables at play.

By the way one of things I’m really loving about this season of Orville is the universe building. We’re actually getting some good stuff regarding what union membership means and kind of the Alien point of view on this organization. One of the things I liked about DS9 was the idea that the Federation wasn’t what they seemed. It’s all well and good on the outside but corruption will always be waiting to flourish in some form. On Orville, I appreciate those questions being asked and the positives and negatives of it.

I hope that’s not the Case. Then it will be too much like DS9’s The Search and I’m trying not to compare this show to Star Trek that much.

Here's a detail about the end of last night's show: we don't know where Ty and Marcus are.

We see them hiding behind the furniture in their quarters when a couple of Kaylons come in to search, but we don't see them captured.

We see Klyden and Topa captured.

We see Claire captive on the command deck, without her sons.

This kind of editorial elision is rarely accidental.

In the preview for next week there is a shot of Claire and Ty together.

oh god please no

I don't know. The only way they can have Issac back on the crew might have to be something like that. They wake up in "Borg Alcove" type units and they were being tested to see how they react to different situations to see if they are "worthy" of the Krylons joining the Union. While it would be a big reset, I'd rather it NOT be that.

That's what they reported as their total numbers as of August.

One assumes that's an average or something - if they really do lose subscribers during the periods when they're not showing new STD episodes as some folks say is true, then the numbers would bounce around.

Their average viewer age is 43, a bit long in the tooth for streaming, I'd think - but then, they're mainly streaming CBS shows, so what would you expect?

Good episode, and I truly don't know how they're going to get out of this one. I mean, yes, I know the invasion of Earth is going to be thwarted somehow. Not sure how, but it'll happen, that's not in doubt. However, what does leave me genuinely wondering is, how are they going to keep Isaac around after this? The crew has no reason to trust him anymore, nor will the Union brass after this. About the only thing I can think of is he actually is loyal to the Union and betrays the Kaylon, but I can't see the Kaylon tolerating betrayal, and I would expect them to deactivate Isaac the moment he betrays them. Should be a fun one next week.

And, damn, Scott Grime can sing! They really need to do a musical episode.
