There is a point, even for Trek, where you can go to far over the top. First Contact works very well-- I still generally don't really like the movie, but it's a good movie-- as is.
And one of the things it got right was it took four stand alone stories and made them one: 1) Birth of Trek 2) Obession to the point of self destruction 3) Seeing heroes for who they really are, warts and all 4) Zombies from Spaaaaaaace!.

Two excellent points. We've seen them do 'our' history before - the Holodeck has shown us (and the characters) a whole range of time periods - we even see one in the movie - and choosing a time period that's actually in 'our' future removed the 'period drama on the holodeck again' thing. Plus, as you say, they amanged to pick a time not too dissimilar to our own, but not doing 'back to 20th century earth' once again.
What about Riker in a toga? I can just hear him saying he was in Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity...
First Contact was fine the way it is. I just wish Tom Hanks had been able to be in the movie.
Is that something you thought of or was that a reality at one point? Who was he supposed to play? I dont think i would have "bought" it with Hanks in any role! Or are you pulling our legs?
I love First Contact and it is up there as one of my top favorites (probably #2 after the new Star Trek movie).
The only complaint i have ever had about FC was how easy it was for them to just "reconfigure yadda yadda technobabble" and find their way back to their proper timeline. For me it was one of those "ok, we have five minutes left, lets wrap this up fast" details.
Huh, never knew that! Very cool that he is into Trek. But for me, personally, i wouldnt have wanted to see Hanks in the role.

yeah, i agree with what everybody is saying... just watched FC for the first time (le gasp! i know!) and i think it worked very well.... they're always going back in time to the rennaissance and the 20th century or whatever... it's cool to see them consider our future their history. i've always liked that.
