News The ongoing next Star Trek movie thread

It's got a production page with an official title and a placeholder shoot date. Money has definitely been spent writing it and location scouting. But I'm sure it can all be written off still...

If it's supposed to start shooting at the end of this month, one would think that preproduction would be finished, costumes would be made, props would be made, the entire cast announced, and a bunch of other important stuff completed by then. We've heard zilch about any of that.

Lump of coal incoming.

In recent years it seems like the number of Trek and Wars productions announced exceeds the total number of films ever produced.

We get it, you're desperate to make a buck out of these creaky old IPs. Perhaps hold off on any grandiose announcements until you've got something locked in.

Anyway, Star Trek Origins ... didn't we already do that with Enterprise and '09?

I think it's possible to squeeze it into canon, it just depends on the will to do so. 2026 is it's supposed release year, and it makes some sense to try and say "hey, this is how it all started" in the show's big anniversary year.

The mostly set on Earth aspect makes it easier to fit into canon, in a way.

It's somehow funny when actors are afraid of getting too old for the role. I didn't hear that very often. :)

Every two years, the next film is in the works. Lather, rinse, repeat, as needed.

Since the studio's complaints seem to be around budget, what this film series needs is a Harve Bennett type. Someone who can do something on a reduced budget.

Maybe Skydance will give them that person.

The Next Generation reunited year before last to film Season 3 of Picard.
Successive casts have managed to age even more gracefully. I've every confidence we'll see the JJ crew back again (sadly minus Anton) someday.
A few more abandoned film scripts, and some producer somewhere will say "Sod theatrical. Let's do a Paramount+ mini-series to wrap up their story", and all the actors will jump at being given the intelligent drama usually drowned out by all that movie spectacle. Who knows, maybe it'll make me feel better about Into Darkness - in the way I'm thankful Nemesis is less traumatic these days.

If this supposed reboot covers the origin again, then this could have bigger implications for the greater trekverse. I'm willing to wait through a retelling if the stuff set up afterwards will be set back on track in terms of actually being made.

I don't. We've seen the last of the Kelvin timeline TOS cast. We only saw them in three films, as opposed to seven years and four movies of the TNG cast. So the comparison is not valid. The KT cast is no longer in the public consciousness.
