News The ongoing next Star Trek movie thread

As soon as SNW became a success, ST4 became pretty much unattainable. There is a reason there's no live-action Batman and movie-Batman at the same time allowed.

Only possibility I see for a ST4 now is if JJ Abrams comes back (which is... not impossible? Guy doesn't seem too busy after his SW trainwreck).

Now Paramount has to figure out what to do with ST, when everything - from old actor reunions to classic reboots - are covered on the streaming side. Would need to be something completely new & innovative - and Hollywood doesn't really like that currently.

Different incentives. P+ wants 52 new episodes of Star Trek a year, to give themselves a permanent foundation of Trekkie subscribers. I'd imagine the actual target number they have isn't much higher than the ratings that got Enterprise cancelled. Movies still need to put as many butts into seats as possible, they can't depend on the core fanbase being willing to spend more money over longer periods of time to see Star Trek compared to Trek's attraction to the broader audience.

And as a movie-goer, I'd be more excited by something completely new than just more nostalgia. With every single franchise relying on it these days, I've gotten severe nostalgia burnout.

Meh. It's extremely common for films to spend years and years in development with directors coming and going. Just check out the history of the production of Spider-Man before Sam Raimi got involved. Star Trek IV #3's situation is pretty normal, actually.

I think what it boils down to is that the executives at Paramount Pictures don't have a clear sense of whose creative vision for Star Trek IV #3 they want to go with. Star Trek IV #3 could go in a million directions, but they need to commit to a vision before they can do that. Sometimes committing to a vision is hard -- and it's probably especially hard in an environment where every movie has to be either microbudget or a blockbuster (because mid-budget movies just don't get made anymore), which means something like Star Trek needs to be a big hit, which means there's pressure to avoid a flop, which means being worried about giving the audience something they can't see every week on Paramount+ other than just a different set of actors playing Our Heroes. I have a bit of sympathy for them, honestly.

Yeah, I don't personally need Star Trek to have to compete with the bigger franchises. I could love it for what it is. But the market is harsh. Trek 2-10 were kind of big budget B movies and there's not a lot of room for that anymore. I wish Trek could find a happy medium in there somewhere, but its not easy.

I'm at the point where I wish they would give up on the film and maybe try spinning Kelvin universe characters off into Paramount plus mini series like Disney is doing with Marvel and Star Wars.

Simple answer-they produced a product that is selling on time, under budget and making money. That's their job.

Paramount undoubtedly feels an intense pressure to get this perfectly right, especially after the merger. Being successful in this current trying market looks very different than pre-COVID, and requires a big showing to feel it is worth the money.

I don’t share the same sentiments as you. I do not think its as complicated as it’s made out to be. Its just that they don’t have the guts to go through with it like I and possibly some other fans do.

Does any even expect there to be a fifth and sixth Kelvinverse movie, with there being 5 tv shows around? Seems to me that billing the movie as the final one of the Kelvinverse would bring out crowds. The audience loves to watch finales.

Okay, but what does that mean? What would a final Kelvin film be about? What themes would it explore? How would its plot develop those themes? Would it be designed to in some way reflect other elements of TOS that ST09, Into Darkness, and Beyond didn't touch? And if so, what elements -- do you avoid elements that have since appeared on the Paramount+ shows (the Guardian of Forever, the Klingons, the Romulans), or do you just do your own version of them and not worry about that?

Generalities are easy. The problem is finding a set of specifics that work.

Indeed. And at this point it seems the specifics are not lining up for Paramount, possibly due to the many different projects, including a very large finale to the TNG crew. The focus for Trek productions appears to be the shows, and the longer time diverisity and success of those.

I don’t think I’m making generalities, since I know what I would do to make a Star Trek film that would have mass appeal, draw big box office numbers, and stay true to the core messages all at the same time.

So, yes, I am touching on elements of ST'09, STID, and BEY. And I’m touching on elements of the tv shows. But only I know how I would lay them out within the film. In my head, the specifics work, and only Paramount themselves could tell me if they agree or not.
