The Old Times

I was a mega lurker back when Enterprise was on the air, so I didn't interact much -- but I remember just about everyone and everything that happened on this forum during the show's run. I was wondering if there are any old timers who remember those times?

I realize this may seem a bit off topic for the ENT forum, but considering it's directed at the nostalgia here, I figured it's close enough.

Anyone remember Ptrope and Dennis Bailey going at it all the time? JohnM's live discussion threads as new episodes aired? David A. Goodman and Mike Sussman posting from time to time?

I remember the rally after the show was canceled. Some of the show's biggest detractors on this board tried to help with TrekUnited and raising money, etc.

I'm just bringing all this up because I'm feeling very nostalgic about this place. There were a lot of great discussions despite all the vitriol that was spewed simultaneously. Does anyone know if there are archives of old threads?

Yes I think I joined the BBS because of ENT.

I remember frivolous "worship threads" for minor characters in every episode. I started to lampoon this trend by making "worship threads" for machines, probes, and the like, that only appeared on-screen for about five seconds.

I also remember lots of complaints about the depiction of Vulcan behavior and culture. And I remember expressing that the original Andorians with thin antennae toward the back of the head looked more insectoid, while the ENT Andorians with stubbier antennae toward the forehead looked more like snails. I also got some flack from other members because I didn't like the way Jolene Blalock noisily inhaled before every single line, and thought that as a professional actor she should have better breath control.

Good to see you again, Kor! Again, I've got like 80 posts here all together, so you won't remember me, but I still remember a lot of shit. It's good to see some old timers (in the context of this board, of course; I know many of us are probably still late 20s or early 30s or so).

Back then, I actually let a lot of the flack that was going on here affect my enjoyment of the show. On one hand it was great to hear what others thought of the show and to know some other perspectives, I sort of let the nit-picking side of some people also work its way into me.

"Gushers" and "bashers"! There was extremism on both sides, to be sure. Nevertheless, it was a great experience reading people's stuff here. It's actually what got me interested in writing a little more than I was beforehand, and Star Trek, and Enterprise in particular, is a large reason on why I went to film and broadcasting school.

To be honest, I'm glad I missed all that to-ing and fro-ing. Things are much more peaceful and reasonable now (excepting the occasional TNG fan popping in to take a dump on stuff we like).

^ I kind of miss those days. :( It was very lively, with constant discussion all day long. Even the current "Star Trek Movies XI+" forum is relatively dead in comparison.

Kevinb, yes the dichotomy of "gushers" and "bashers" got kind of ridiculous sometimes. It's just a TV show, after all. :p

I wasn't around for the "old times", as I've only been on here a few months. But it seems to me that there is some ""gushing" and "bashing" that occurs over on the Voyager threads..
(Though maybe that's even a little tame by "old time" standards?) I enjoy visiting those forms once in a while for a good laugh , as things can get quite lively !

Mostly ,I'm just a major Enterprise fan, and I enjoy spending my time with my peeps here! ;) though I do enjoy the lively intelligent commentary "my peeps" provide on the other boards!:p

That's relatively recent, quite a few bashers attracted to the light.

I'm pretty sure the ENT heydays when it was a new series were a lot more dramatic!

I was probably thought of as a gusher back then. Though I'd like to think my opinion was more balanced. I could see the flaws, but still liked the show.

^ I tried to be balanced, and neither a gusher nor a basher.

I also remember many humourous, smart-alecky posts by Samuel T. Cogley.

Oh yeah, and if you think the "five word story" threads are annoying, be glad there are no more "one word" threads like we had back then!

And through all this, I was renowned for my mastery of the rolleyes emoticon. *sigh* the good old days...

He just posted here a few months ago after I don't know how many years. It was one of his usual droll, trollish, observations. Most of the responses came from folks who didn't know who he was and weren't familiar with his style. They took him seriously and responded that way. Funny.

I thought about tossing him a rolleyes icon for old times sake.

I'll tell you though, I've never seen anything on the internet to match this forum on the day the cancellation was announced. Most of us thought the show would get the entire season and then UPN would make up their minds. But BLAMMO. It was a bloodbath around here.

There was this one poster who had always come in while the show aired and made little veiled snide remarks and little backhanded "compliments". He did that in the cancellation thread. Emotions were running high and I just recall going left on him. That was the only person I have ever put on 'ignore" since I started posting here. Good times -- NOT!

You want to talk good times? Check this out.

Now THOSE were good times. :sigh: :techman:

(Unfortunately not all of the episodes are there, but it's a start.)

Yes, Good times indeed! We did not let Enterprise die quietly, we made some noise. :)

The shipper wars here were a bloodbath. Warnings flying about like shrapnel, thread closures, separating the Trip/T'Polers and Archer/T'Polers into their own threads to keep them from killing each other. The Sho-Rin remembers well.

I remember peeking in here during the heyday while the show was on the air, and just not understanding what all the fighting was about. But then again, I had always been the only Trek fan I ever knew, and I just loved it all. My entree into the Internet Trek community because of ENT was like a baptism of fire. But all this passion was just a reflection of our love for the show.

I was like you, kevinb - took me a year to get a hundred posts and earn an avatar. I was such a quiet little thing.
