The 'Official' TrekBBS Calendar Project

-Make the images relate to the month. This is less important, but it would be nice to have the "snowy" scense in winter, etc. To whatever extent this can be done.

I agree with that.

Though for some reason, I thought of Spock as one of Santa's elves, sitting on top of a Borg cube as it was pulled along by the original Enterprise, Ent-A, Ent-D, Ent-E, Voyager, Defiant, NX-01 and an Excelsior acting like Reindeer, with Quark as Santa.

Perhaps a bit too abstract for people. :)

...actually it seems far too specific to me! :p

Actually... I like it! While it seems so specific, it also brings up a feeling... Not to mention Quark as Santa! ;)

Maybe some things from books

That would be awesome... perhaps some scenes from novels like "Vendetta" or "Imzadi"!

I think a GREAT idea for a "centerfold" image, would be a shot of a scene from "Vendetta", where the 1701-D, the Chekov, the Tholians and the Borg are battling the Doomsday Machine. That would be one spectacular image!

I have a few images I made at one time that might be fun to use in a calendar. They're made from my models, so I'd want to give credit to the original companies if my image(s) were ever chosen. How do I submit them?

Okay, nothing's happened with this since January, so I thought I'd kick over the anthill to see what happens. Personally, I'd still like to see us do a calendar that can be downloaded and printed out. Obviously, we haven't done anything with calendar-specific images, so I figured we'd use what we have - the monthly challenges. So that leaves us with coming up with some sort of format to display these images. Unlike the SOTL calendar, the challenge images weren't designed with an overlaid calendar grid in mind. That means we need to separate the image and the grid, hopefully coming up with something that looks good in the process. Even with a standard format, it would need to be adapted to each month's winner, since they don't all share the same dimensions. Just to get the ball rolling, I've done this up in about 10 minutes with Powerpoint, using the only archived 2006 month from Ptrope's website:

I wouldn't call this anywhere near decent, and I would prefer a Trek-themed layout, but it does give us a starting point. Comments?

Hello? Is this thing on? It's been two days, and no comments. So is the calendar dead or what?

Please stand by ... we are experiencing technical difficulties ...

Looks good, B.J., though maybe a bit cluttered, but that's hard to avoid since, as you noted, most of the challenge artwork isn't designed to overlay a grid, or even to vaguely similar proportions.

I wouldn't call the calendar project dead, at all - it's just something that we haven't really taken into account in the ongoing march toward artistic greatness which is the TrekArt forum ;). There are a variety of approaches to take - it could be culled from the existing challenges, 'as is,' or someone could even propose it as an "end product" for a new one, with a predetermined grid that entrants would need to allow for in their compositions. We could even 'resolicit' previous entries or wholly new artwork that has been recomposed to allow for the grid, or at least in a standardized aspect ratio.

I have to say, after seeing the 2007 SotL calendar, I'm firmly convinced that the group of artists participating here could easily create a much more interesting and professional calendar ... :wtf:

Where THIS come from?
Presumably, Santaman is responding to B.J.'s "Trek Kids," yes?

Yes.

Sorry for the confusement, I tend to vagually remember threads I visited ages ago and in this case i found something new (to me) to which I commented.

So a calendar to print out and pin up on a wall. Hm. My LCARS system already serves as a clock and calendar in Standby mode on an old laptop. If you press ESC, it shows the next month's calendar. It's also a musical/talking alarm clock and makes a nice nightlight for a bedroom (going all white if you press the space bar to serve as an emergency light). The disadvantage is that it requires an old laptop to install it on. If it's a Trekkie calendar you want, I'd say that's hard to beat (it also has lots of LCARS programs).

I was thinking of having it generate calendar wallpaper for desktop-metaphor systems and posting them for download on my new Web site, as well.

But for you idea of paper calendars, what about MSDs, each with a calendar in one corner rather than the traditional vertical type?
