The Official and Very Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thread

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

The Selling Wizard, where Servo is convinced he needs to buy a commercial display cooler.

Gypsy: "Tom?"

Servo: "Yep?"

Gypsy: "I don't get you."

Servo: "Nobody does. I'm the wind, baby!"

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Our favorite baritone gumball-machine robot asks us to stop with the Canada-bashing and presents us with a song to sell it. (Actual video ends around the 2:20 mark, no idea why it's nearly 3 minutes of dead-air, but it's the highest quality I could find.)

Servo: "Why you lousy, stinkin', francophonic bacon-loving bastards you country's just a giant piece of..."
Mike/Crow: "Whoa! Whoa! Hey!"

Love it!

By the way, you guys impress me. MST3K is funny, but I'll be damned if I can sit all the way through those god-awful films!

If you can get through the unriffed, original version of Manos, you're a braver person than most of us.

I'd have posted the unriffed version of, say, Monster A Go-Go, but that might constitute an actual war crime under international law.

Speaking of which, who here has actually watched, in full, any the riffed movies on its own, prior to seeing the MST3K episode?

I've only seen one: the Christmas classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I watched it online thanks to it being in the Public Domain. And of course, it was much more entertaining the second time around. ;)

"S-A-N-T-A, C-L-A-U-S, hooray for Santa Claus!"

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

The only one I ever saw, in full, before or since, was Phase IV, and it was before. At the time, I thought it was interesting.

I had seen Rocketship X-M and King Dinosaur many times before because both were in heavy rotation on our local cable system's so-called "Classic Movies" channel. I remember wishing Joel and the bots would riff on them, and then being so glad to see them both chosen. Even was able to predict a riff or two.

Those Lippert films were hilarious on their own, but pure gold once MST3K got hold of them.

By the way, that's "Santy Claus." You spell it S-A-N-T-A but pronounce it S-A-N-T-Y.

Cool Eddie might remember this one from the "toys" thread in "Misc."

No, this isn't a 3D render. I'm nowhere near that skilled. I found a merchant on eBay who builds screen accurate recreations with the same puppet mechanisms.

Sincerely,

Bill

I saw Marooned (aka Space Travelers), Gorgo, and Revenge of the Creature before I saw the MST3K episodes. Fortunately, these are three of the better movies they did, so they weren't too painful.

There are kits and instructions out there telling you what to get and how to build your own Crow/Servo. I considered that route but didn't have time or necessarily all of the skills/tools build my own Servo and it was in the long-run cheaper to just buy one. Probably got my Servo from the same guy you got yours.

Servo is my favorite bot. Little desire to get Crow, though it's also be nice for "completion" sake. I love Servo so much, plust he's fairly compact, I had to have one.

:)

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Awesome Possum built his own Tom Servo and got the opportunity to have his photo taken with both the puppet and Joel Hodgson. I hope he knows this thread exists and visits it, because he's one of the all-time great MST3K fans on this board.

Similar situation here. I knew of the "kits" and instruction sites, but I didn't think I could have done the 'Bots the justice they deserved. And, yes, I like Servo just a bit more, for a couple of reasons. As you noted, he's bit more compact. His gumball "head" reminds me a bit of my all time favorite sci-fi robot, the "Robot" (B9) from "Lost in Space" and Kinoshita's earlier marvel, Robby the Robot of "Forbidden Planet". Also, there's just "something" I can't really put into words about his performer, Kevin Murphy. I instantly "latched" onto his performance when I finally got to see the series on the SciFi Channel. I also loved that he can sing so well. His musical interludes were probably my favorite "host segments" from the series. And of those "When I Held Your Brain in My Arms" comes to mind first. (Yes, I know it was Mike Nelson with the microphone, but he lip synched to Murphy's voice in that number.)

But as you also stated, you just can't really "break up" a pair, so I had to get Crow as well. Not that I dislike the character, heavens no; but I like Servo just a wee bit more.

I hope Crow's fans reading this thread won't send a virus my way for that admission. ;)

Sincerely,

Bill

I'm pretty sure I got Servo from the same builder as Redfern. I got the kit that allowed me to build him. I need to get Crow at some point because I hate to break them up and want to build a home theater, giving both a seat of honor there.

Joel is really worth getting to meet in person. Superfriendly and willing to teach secret handshakes. He does a sort of one man show and is basically his life story but showing where all the various things that inspired the look of MST3K came from and how he discovered it. There's an awful lot of ventriloquist dummies and magic tricks.

If anyone is interested in the kits, they're pretty easy. The hardest part is gluing the PVC neck piece in place. The rest is following instructions and painting. They tell you to cut the clear head off with a saw. But just take a hair dryer and run it inside the bubble. After a few moments, you can just pop it off.

Re: The Official and Most Rifftastic Mystery Science Theater 3000 Thre

Oh, yeah, I saw Marooned, too. I missed that because I didn't know it as Space Travelers. Oops, I did also overlook This Island Earth, in their feature film. Definitely seen that. So, with Phase IV, that makes (at least) three for me.

For Trekker and Possum, I'm guessing the vendor may have been Sledge_RipRock?

He's the person with whom I conducted business. I don't think I've ever seen items so well packed! They could have survived a fall from an airplane!

Sincerely,

Bill

One of my favorite moments from the early years of the show and a song that - once stuck in your head - you can't get rid of, nor do you really want to.

That's him. One of the best people I've ever dealt with when it came to prop replicas.

Anybody here a member of the old MST3K Fan Club and still have their original membership cards? I still have mine after more than 20 years and it's still in one piece and legible, even though it's not in pristine condition.

I also received issues of the old "Satellite News" newsletter for a while, and in the days before I had access to the Internet it was one of the few ways to keep track of the show and its new and developing news other than by watching it every week. Good times. That was back when being a fan felt like a bigger and more exclusive deal because fewer people knew about and were into the show.
