The Nostalgia Critic: Odd Numbered Trek Films

Linkara is clearly a die-hard Trekkie.

Doug I think has seen the movies and TV series (at the very least TNG) and is a "fan" but not in the die-hard Trekkie levels.

There are going to be degrees of fandom.

I think that was what I was picking up on. And I think this was the viewpoint that the Critic was reviewing from; a casual Trek viewer making a video for everyone and not specifically Trek fans.

I'm a big TMP fan (it's my fave) and even I was disappointed in the review. It was too short and he missed some great shots.

1) Kirk and Co getting at "Oh that Bones" sort of laugh about using the transporter when just minutes (hours) before two people died on the pad. Hell yeah, I been sending someone else up first.

2) Or them using Decker's relationship with Illia to get to the probe. Where's the line end in that thinking?

3) The moment that passes between Kirk and Spock in the sickbay that can be read as slashy if you're into that.

Just little things that stood out. Come on, the Miss Piggy Head, how did that not get a mention.

I love the Critic and I think he did an alright job with TMP.

But, like has been said, he's not a die-hard Trek fan. He has indicated that he's a fan, but I'd guess mostly of TOS and TNG and then a casual fan at that.

Still, his reactions to Ilia's oath of celibacy were hilarious.

Who says someone has to be a die-hard fan to review the movie? Whether he is or not, he took the right approach to "mainstream" his review. I'm guessing that NC's average fan is, at most, a casual fan of Trek if at all.

Yeah, if you don't know the "fanon"/background of the character it clearly comes out of nowhere.

But, really, she just stepped on the bridge and saw Kirk there, she probably hedged her bets and went on the safe side. ;)

The "even/odd" films thing is mostly crap. It didn't come about until The Final Frontier stank up the joint. I still have the print reviews for Star Treks 2 & 3 and at the time, Trek 3 was considered a better film than Khan by many reviewers. They lauded Nimoy's direction and the feeling of camaraderie harkening back to the old series. All of the Trek fans I knew (admittedly, not many) all loved the movie. Until TFF, the Trek movie series was widely considered one of the very few series to get BETTER with each outing. That was a real source of pride back then. Now, nearly 30 years later people call TSFS lame. Please. It's a damned fine entry in the series, a real heavy piece that is extremely important in setting up Trek 4. I'm surprised it gets such a bum rap so many years after the fact.

Makes sense. The fact that 7 and 9 sucked too didn't help matters, obviously. But, with XI now out and obviously not sucking, I hope this odd/even thing with be put to rest.

I'm sure some reviewers liked Trek 3 better. I didn't know a single person, trekkie or no, who did. One of my friends, who had a passing interest in Trek pretty accurately damned it with faint praise: "It's not much of a movie, but it's what I remember thinking was fun about Star Trek when I was a kid, running around outer space with your friends having adventures."

Geez, another dork who thinks droning into a video camera makes him interesting?

Pass.

Considering he"s been doing these videos for a few years now and has 1000's of followers (and he does anything but "drone" into the camera) I'd say he has good merit to think he is interesting.

Good point. ;)

I'm a huge fan of the Nostalgia Critic. I generally find his reviews pithy and amusing. A couple even edge into the area of "pocket masterpieces" (yes, Moulin Rouge, I'm looking at you!). But this one just wasn't quite on, if you know what I mean. There really wasn't an original thought in the piece. Every point he brought out, whether I agreed or disagreed, had been brought out before over and over again. I found the video to have the feel of being "forced," as if the NC didn't really have his heart in it. Ah,well.... I'm still looking forward to the rest of the month.

TSFS, just in passing, was a critical and box office success. I well remember standing in line for the second screening and listening to the exiting viewers from the first babbling excitedly about how this one was "the best ever!" I thought, and still think as it happens, that TSFS is a far better film than either WOK or TVH, but that is a matter of opinion. (Actually, I bloody DESPISE TVH, but that's for another post)

I like SfS, it's a great film and doesn't really fit the odd number curse. I tend not to view it as a true standalone film though, it's a solid sequel for TWoK and leads in great for VH. A great bridge film between two of the best Trek movies.

Last I heard tell, he's making pretty good money at it too.

And has received several accolades for doing what he does from other professionals in the field such as Roger Ebert. And it really isn't that he's "another" one, but rather that Walker was really the first one to revolutionize the online video reviewer into the mainstream.
