The Ninth Doctor at Big Finish

I'd say that Briggs could be occassionally good, as I thought he was with Old Sixie's regeneration story. Mainly, because that was a very plot-driven story, but was also able to put some emotion and character throughout, which he often forgets to do (not unlike OldWho, I might add). I just think, more often than not, he sacrifices plot for those emotive, characterization-thriving moments, which is exactly what I expect from BF.

Briggs writes and/or directs so much event stuff-- premieres and finales for the Eighth and Fourth Doctor Adventures, the first and last War Doctor stories, the sixth Doctor regeneration story, The Light at the End-- that I sometimes think he does feel obligated, as if being the overall producer at Big Finish makes him the showrunner of their entire Doctor Who line. If so, I think that's the wrong way to look at it, but I can see why he would, especially given his and BF's roots in the very small-scale, DIY world of fan audio.

That said, I -- and no doubt many others -- hoped Hurt would have many more years to record War Doctor audios. I dreamed once of a boxed set of stories with the War Doctor teaming with the fourth Doctor (just imagine Hurt and Baker chewing the scenery together!), the War Doctor and River, even the War Doctor and Iris Bloody Wildthyme (just because it would be weird).

What I was hoping for was War Doctor vs Master featuring John Hurt and Derek Jacobi (although that is of course rendered impossible by Tennant not recognising Jacobi in "Utopia").

Failing that, War Doctor vs Rassilon starring John Hurt and Timothy Dalton would definitely have been possible, and very interesting given the line from "Hell Bent" - "He doesn't blame the Time Lords. He just blames you."

Alas, it was not to be...

.

I must admit I'm a tad curious to see what they do with Adam Mitchell given that there is hardly any wiggle room to cram in an adventure between Dalek and The Long Game. I don't think they need to make him an on-going character, but one or two are fine.

Jackie, however, needs a very light touch. She can be hard to stomach at times. Isn't Mickey (Noel Clark) available? His stories could bleed into how he and Martha got together. (I think Freema would be up to doing BF; she read some of the novelizations in the past.)

There's room to do more with Adam after his appearances on the show, though, given they left him on 21st century Earth with alien tech in his head.

I take it you've never read the IDW 50th Anniversary comic miniseries Prisoners of Time, then? The aftermath of Adam's enhancement, and what it ended up doing to his sanity, is very much the front-and-center core of that story.

Until I did some googling earlier today I'd forgotten Adam was in it. Not too memorable, I guess.

If Nick Briggs is able to oversee so much audio output, why couldn't the BBC put him in charge of running the TV series? (Even if he lacks TV production experience, they could just have him run the writing portion and get a TV bean counter to handle the production side. That was basically how the classic series did it.)

Agreed. And more Iris Wildthyme in general, please! :D

I'm not sure why Billie Piper is considered so unlikely for ever doing any audios. I mean, she does conventions, which I got the impression that Catherine Tate doesn't really do, yet Tate was willing to come back for Big Finish.

Because she gets paid a hell of a lot more for turning up for a couple of hours to sign autographs then she would being in studio for a week recording a box set of stories.

David Tennant and Matt Smith have literally made millions from convention appearances over that past few years.

At this point in their careers none of the main cast from 2005 onwards needs the pitance BF can pay them.

I think Tennant and Tate did Big Finish for a pittance because 1) Tennant is a fanboy and he's worked with them before and 2) Tennant and Tate enjoy working together and this was a way that they could.

Otherwise, everything StCoop said. Smith, Gillen, Darvill, and Piper are all pulling down six figures for convention appearances. Big Finish is something barely on their radar.

Although Darvill has worked with Big Finish on at least one non-Doctor Who production (I can't remember which one).

Peter Davison spilled the beans that Georgia Moffett has been recording stories as Jenny for BF.

But still no sign of the Paternoster series that would actually make sense.

Odd that they still haven't tried to do any Paternoster Gang stories. It's not like Neve McIntosh or Catrin Stewart are too busy to drop by the BF studio for a few days, and Dan Starkey is always there...

Of course, you do still have Tom-era Jago & Litefoot cranking out Victorian supernatural mystery dramas every few months (including an upcoming Short Trip where they regale a science club audience with the story of their first meeting with Ten), so maybe it's a matter of looking for the right crossover story and otherwise just waiting for one/both to pass on before going with their heirs apparent.

Well, they have already done a small crossover with Jago & Litefoot & Strax so they clearly have some interest in it.
