Don't get me wrong, Prax, I still think that Voyager was a good show (for a not Sci-Fi fan, this was the only series I watched from the beginning to the end, and that during 3-4 months, just to say!), despite its weaknesses but, when you ask to fans of the whole Star Trek franchise (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT), Voyager is ranked right in front Entreprise, which is itself, at the bottom of the list(*) So yes, I say that so much money(**) spent in Voyager's series for arriving at this result, is truly unfortunate!
* Entreprise counted only 4 seasons after to have almost been canceled at the end of the S3, perhaps precisely because this series arrived too quickly after Voyager, dragging the same weaknesses, what ended to annoy fans.
** which some was clearly thrown out of the windows (Janeway's different hair styles ; some of holodeck programs, like the one where Janeway played a nanny from the 19th century or Flubber and his friends in Wonderland, for ex) which were used something like once our twice in the whole series.
TOS only ran three years. As much as it's the granddaddy of us all. I love that Voyager is the most popular re-watched of ALL Trek
Regards Enterprise it still had a four year run. Then there will be Discovery which has far less episodes per season to start off with. So it would need to run about twelve years to equate! Man it will be lucky to last two.All that aside Voyager succeeded on its own merits.
There was a thread here a few months ago titled "Voyager something, something, Baloney!" And the guy who started it(who may have been banned), set himself on a crusade to refute this. He went and gathered a bunch of polling data from Star Trek sites like Trek.com, as well as Youtube, and other places, and found out this perception might be greatly inaccurate.
I'll Try to find it. It showed that Voyagers was usually near the top in polls(just behind TNG, and sometimes #1), and many other interesting facts.
And then there's that Star Trek Netflix data (that @Refuge just mentioned)that was recently distributed. They gave us the top ten most rewatched Star Trek episodes on Netflix, worldwide. 6 of them were Voyager episodes, including the #1 most rewatched(Endgame), and the other four were from TNG. That's pretty astonishing considering there are over 700 episodes and 6 series.

Listen Prax, I do not seek controversy and I have no intention to discuss the fact that Voyager is a hit on Netflix, besides I was happily surprised by the news (on the other hand, to find out that "Endgame" was one of the most ST finales watched, left me speechless because I have read some much negatives reviews about this 2-parts episode, after it was aired in 2001 that I surely expected to see quote in the end of the list and then, there were other 2-parts episodes, so much more superior, let's be honest. That being said, I loved Endgame, especially for the intense face-to-face between both Janeways & Janeway/the Borg Queen. only s the C/7's storyline was a problem for me.
).NB: A year ago, when I declared to friends and family, who are almost all, sci-fi fans - unlike me (I'm more a fan of LA Law - recently discovered, while this show dated from 80s! - & Law & Order & JAG) in particular long Trekkies, that I loved ST: Voyager, to the point of having watched the show from the beginning to the end and purchased the whole series in DVD, they were making fun of me, because according to them, Voyager was the worst (characters, storylines ->they did not appeciate less Seven and the Doctor!). But, I didn't care, because their mockery will not prevent me to watch Voyager again, for the pleasure to follow Cpt Janeway & Cie adventures in the DQI
(For me, Janeway is the best Starfleet Captains and Kate Mulgrew, one of the best in term of acting ..., even if I know that this position is very far to be shared by most fans!

I don't care how other people rate the various ST shows and it doesn't affect my opinions at all. I like all the shows, except for Discovery, as I've not been able to see it yet to be able to form an opinion, but Voyager and DS9 remain my favorites.
Dangers could always pop up during the night shift, but I've always thought of it as the crew not performing any important missions or procedures during that time. So while it's not totally devoid of action, there isn't anything routinely scheduled during that time.
Of course, Voyager in particular is a bit different, in that the Delta quadrant was unknown space, and there were more unknown dangers than say the Enterprise-D traveling somewhere through Federation space during its night shift.

Even when Voyager's ratings had gone way down they were still higher than anything else on UPN.
You might be a conundrum. There's a bit of a trend for DS9 fans to like Discovery, with Voyager often used as an example of an 'anti' Discovery. Still it is Star Trek so if you get a chance you can make up your own mind.

I know it doesn't fit very well with a ship through space(other Trek shows did the same) my idea is that Janeway and co. were on the main 8 hour(or 6 hour or whatever shift) and Harry took over after that. I imagine the crew operated on a 24 hour cycle-mimicking earth in a somewhat artificial manner perhaps to ensure smooth functioning of the crew's circadian rhythms.
So during the "day" Janeway being the captain would be in charge and the lights would be brighter, in the "night" the lights would be dimmed and Harry would be in charge(at least a few times a week apparently) perhaps so to better experience the illusion of an actual day time-night time cycle.
I seem to recall TNG did the same thing and I imagine the defiant and runabouts in DS9 had some similar procedure.

Speaking of shift rotations, DS9 began using a 4 shift rotation after "STARSHIP DOWN", when Kira suggested it to Sisko. I believe it became permanent after "ACCESSION", 10 episodes later, when she and Sisko were meeting in his office. She noted how everyone loved the flexibility of that 4 watch system.
4 hour shifts? So 26(on DS9) divided by 6 is 6.5. So that's roughly 6.5 hour work shifts per day.
Seems to me to be a pretty comfortable work schedule.
