For my fellow American friends who aren't illegally downloading, The Next Doctor is finally coming out on DVD on September 15th.

Unfortunately this is the first of the Post-S4 Specials, and the second special, Planet of the Dead, is being released before this one on July 28th!

For those who have seen both, will I be spoiled or confused by watching Planet before Doctor?

Bwah? Why are they being released out of order? :wtf:
If I had to guess? The footage of McGann from the television movie, even though it's all of a second, would have required clearances from Vivendi Universal, as they hold the video rights to the film.

I imagine that if the clearances hadn't been forthcoming, that sequence would have been re-edited to remove McGann.

^ That would have royally sucked!

So does that mean if they cleared that half-a-second of McGann, we can expect an R1 release of The Movie anytime now?

I imagine they just scheduled "Planet of the Dead" first so they could release the DVD a couple days after BBC America broadcast, taking advantage of its immediate visibility.

It's really up to V-U. They haven't shown any interest in releasing it before, so I don't know why things would change now.

I think it might take a Doctor Who movie for someone there to realize, "Wait, we're sitting on something we can sell!"

It's not huge in the US. It's a moderate success within the science fiction and British TV niches. That's not to say there wouldn't be money to be made from an R1 TVM DVD, but it's not like they're ignoring a gold mine.

I thought the vast majority of fans despised the FOX TV Movie and decided to excise it from continuity? I remember watching it when it originally aired but I haven't seen it since so I don't remember how good/bad it was.

It's not widely popular, and like anything after 1979 it has its vocal detractors, but it's not universally despised either. It's tied for 92nd out of 163 stories in the Outpost Gallifrey 2003 poll, and 166th out of 216 in the constantly-updated Doctor Who Dynamic Rankings.

And fortunately, fans aren't the ones who decide to excise things from continuity.

Since they continue to release unpopular stories in R1, it would seem that even something that doesn't have a lot of fans can turn a profit, but it's a fair point that the TVM isn't necessarily going to do good business just because other Doctor Who is moderately popular.

Weird! The Next Doctor aired this past weekend on BBC America--will it air there again? I'm excited about the special coming this month, as well as Torchwood, and am thrilled they're all out on DVD on July 28th! That's awesome. Usually we have to wait ages for the DVDs!

The Next Doctor is now on iTunes, for those interested in legal downloading. I checked the schedule, and couldn't find a rebroadcast.

I went ahead and bought it. $2 versus waiting until September to be price gouged by BBC Video. It'll probably cost 40 bucks on DVD.

it would be really sad if they had been forced to edit out the 8th Doctors quick appearance, it would make Vivendi Universal look very dumb and petty

$15, actually, and the disc also includes the hourlong highlights versions of last year's BBC Proms concert. It's still arguably a hefty price tag, but then I've never seen the point of single-disc TV DVDs anyway. I'll wait for the boxed set.

I wonder if there's some sort of pre-existing arrangement regarding short clip usage, because all the R1 Doctor Who DVDs with the 30th Anniversary Celebration feature have multiple short clips of the Eighth Doctor.

Already got my copy of Planet of the Dead. Haven't watched it yet, though. The Next Doctor was excellent.

I would think so. None of the DVDs in either region have included typical extras like commentaries, 5.1 audio mixes, and trailers. And let's face it, 2|entertain isn't going to miss an opportunity to double dip.
