The next Discworld TV mocie is: Going Postal...

i want them to do Guards! Guards!

overall, it was a good adap even if they did muck about with it a bit. 9/10

Charles Dance was brilliant as Vetinari.

(do wonder why they changed it to a race to Uberwald, not Genua though...)

Maybe they're planning Uberwald related stories soon on the list and so want to start name dropping now to get some connections going. This way if they do something like fith elephant the viewers will recall the name.

I will say this is probably the best one yet and the first I'm going to be getting on dvd on launch day to rewatch.

It's been a while since I read the book but was the shattering of the omniscope part of the book? Cos it looked to me like they might be setting up Last Hero (which I would love to see done). Shatter it now and start with them picking up the bits without having to break it at the start of the story. Don't think they're going for that interconectedness though are they?

^ Interconnectedness is unlikely unfortunately. I don't recall the Omniscope getting shattered in the novel, but I'm sure there's a few things in the film that aren't in the book. The dangling from the Clacks tower scene?

I'll be getting this on DVD as well. Hugely enjoyable.

considering in the novel there was no derelict clacks tower, it was an old wizarding tower... no there was no hanging off a clacks tower. nor was the final scene with the Omniscope outside - it was in UU and nor was Moist in danger of being hung, because he was supposed to be on the mail coach heading to Genua at the time.

Definitely the best adaptation so far.

Let's face it, Pratchett adaptations are always going to be difficult to get right, as the books rely so much on the narrative mode for exposition, character development and many other things. And without it, that which cannot be converted to the visual medium can fall by the wayside. And Pratchett is so wonderful at using the narrative mode to show us what a character is thinking and how their mind works.

As for the casting, I'd say that some of it was spot-on. Lipwig, Adora, Vetinari, Groat, Stanley and some of the minor roles, for a start. But Ridcully? Woefully miscast IMO. Stephen Fry for Ridcully would work, I'd say. That voice needs to boom!

So overall, not a bad effort even if did drag a bit in part 2. Looking forward to the next one.

The second part wasn't quite as good as the first part, but this is still the best adaptation of the three. My biggest problem is that they didn't explain the fact that Reacher Gilt was using his position in the Grand Trunk to try and bring down Vetinari and that Vetinari was using Moist to save his Patricianship. Going purely from the TV version it seems like Vetinari planned the whole thing out because he didn't like Gilt, which makes Vetinari seem a little petty. Even still, Charles Dance as Vetinari was a highlight, even if he didn't have black hair.

I don't think they'd worry too much about inter-continuity between the minis, even assuming they ever do a subsequent Rincewind story. Still, if they do do one and wanted to make the connection it shouldn't be too hard to get him back in less than 30 seconds.
I'm more worried that they may be inclined to change the ending to a happier one because of the lack of a follow up. That would be a huge mistake so they're almost certain not to do it, but it is possible that Sky might insist on a happy ending in order to make it more family friendly.

Sourcery.

At the end of the book Rincewind was left trapped in the Dungeon Dimension in a rare act of sacrifice on his part. I fear they might change the ending of the TV adaptation so that it's not such a downer for the kids. They probably wont, they've been pretty faithful for the most part, although in Going Postal they have started to take more liberties with the story.

Well if they're worried about the ending of Sourcery then all they need do is add a short post credit scene with Eric summoning him back, to comical effect. Or just have a flash of light and have him reappear in the library without explanation. Something along those lines.

My worry about them linking straight into Eric (which I would like to see done as a movie) is that they will try and do both at the same time ala Colour, instead of just doing one book at a time like they've done with Hogfather and Going

Yeah but Hogfather and Going Postal are longer than Sourcery and Eric combined! So really, it would be easier than Colour of Magic...

And if I can have any Discworld adaptation, I'd go for The Truth, but since they already had newspapers in Going Postal, that would be a bit weird. So I'll settle for any City Guards book, they just need to find someone Clint Eastwood-y for Vimes...

I'd like to see them do an adaptation of Men at Arms, but it might be a bit too police-procedural to work as a miniseries. Guards! Guards! would be good though, it has a dragon and everything.

The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic were much easier to merge because the central characters and the style of story were the same, in both books Rincewind and Twoflower are having adventures across the Disc. Sourcery and Eric are very different, the only character in both novels is Rincewind, and the style of stories is different. It was never going to be too difficult to extend The Light Fantastic's story over TCOM, but I don't think it's possible to extend Sourcery's story over Eric.

As would I. I got my introduction to the series through "The Watch" series and they've tended to be my favourites.
