The New USS Discovery....

I'm a fan of the FJTM and blueprints, but I don't think much of the MK-X Dreadnought. Never did. But the possible-future Ent D in "All Good Things..." is an obvious homage to it that not only looks good (mainly by managing a more sensible mount of the third nacelle) and is really exciting but also wouldn't have happened without it. So, yay, go FJTM MK-X Dreadnought!

Each his own, ofcourse. But the Dreadnought still looks like the fanwankiest ship I've seen.
Agreed. I am a big fan of FJ work and have a nice hardbound copy of the Technical Manual. But, the Dreadnought is my least favorite of all the designs. Personally, I thought the Miranda class actually fit in the FJ design tree as well.

But, I cannot stand the ENT-D. The Discovery is a bit of an ugly design, but I might warm up to it. Never warmed up to Galaxy class.

Here's another very nice fan-rendering of Discovery from someone at DeviantArt. Looks about right to me.

FJ's mounting of the 3rd nacelle where it was allows the saucer to have warp capability if it needs to separate. Then it just looks like an inverted Hermes kinda sorta.

I've always loved the dreadnought, the scout, the tug, all FJ's designs. It made sense that Starfleet would use as many similar parts as possible. I'm certain Vance was inspired by FJ, with all his toolkits.

You've obviously never seen this one then.

That's even bigger and more epic than the USS Teh Awesome. Talk about redundant systems :guffaw:

Now that I think of it, the Discovery looks like a Planet of the Titans concept that would have been refit with an additional saucer donut around the concept's smaller saucer. A refit would somewhat explain the separate saucer rings in-universe.

It's not fully clear to me that that was FJ's intent. For one thing, there is a specifically labeled navigational deflector on the MK-X Dreadnought, but it's only on the secondary hull. Granted, there are three circles on the front of the MK-X saucer that correspond to the three small dishes that are labeled "search sensors and deflectors" on the MK-IX Constitution saucer. However, the main dish on the MK-IX secondary hull is labeled "main sensor and navigational deflector" in the blueprints, so there is no reason I can see to suppose that the saucer deflectors on the MK-IX are necessarily intended to operate as navigational deflectors at warp. Since we have only limited information to work with, that would therefore apply to the corresponding structures on the MK-X. Furthermore, the two dishes on the MK-X corresponding to the main dish on the MK-IX are both also on the secondary hull. The other option would be to jettison the third nacelle on saucer separation.

Still, the idea that you propose could be made to work. Good observation.
