I like that idea - sort of like the whole bridge is a captain's yacht! If the bridge was more of a sphere shape as in Irish Trekkie's design I could imagine that being like a second separation from the saucer itself. Like a large life pod.

I really like the cutouts, it gives it a whole new level of depth and visual interest and they could move the camera into that space for closeups. It even allows for a double separation. You know, for when really you can't save everyoneI did put this in TrekYards on a lark...but with some alteration this might work. I think the inner ring would probably stay. I was inspired while vacuuming ;-)

What about Franklin? He deserved better. After you pop that vacuum open, make sure you let Scotty out. He's been stuck in there for 75 years.

You know, for when really you can't save everyone. Although the nacelles look much sleeker and cooler, I like how they are less of a focal point in the teaser and are the one thing that dates the ship before the Connie. I liked even more how they were understated in the McQuarrie concept. Regardless, very nice work!
Agreed, nothing about DSC seems fit into the 23rd we know. That's why I think we'll eventually see a new larger version of 1701, but scaled correctly (unlike the sized up Kelvin 1701). I also think we'll see it in DSC under Pike's command down the road (s2) if not sooner. Not being against the negative space per se, but I sure do think the "multiple rings"-design doesn't fit into the 23rd century. How freakishly big IS this ship?! From TOS I got the impression the Connie was the biggest and baddest ship around. This thing would dwarf our good, old Enterprise!
Thank you very much! Just having new Trek is very inspiring and I've really tried to push my design this past year.Goddamn!
Can I just tell you how much I love this art of you!? Man, that's great on so many levels...
To talk purely about the design of the Discovery: The problem with the teaser trailer version was never the nacelles. It was the boxy underbelly. And since that was the main revealing shot at the end of the teaser, many people didn't like the design of the ship at first viewing.
But it has grown to me. And I sure like it better than with holes in the saucer and backward pointing nacelles. This original design needed only work on the edges, making it a bit smoother and elegant, and more detailed. It didn't need a total overhaul...
Anyway. We'll see with what we will finally end up on screen. I hope it's at least half as graceful as your posters!
I have seen two different sizes floating around 1 - big carrier sized 2 - (from Trekyards) slightly smaller than the Enterprise. I tend to trust Sam and Stewart and that fits with the TOS time. I hope we find out soon, and I really want to see the shuttles! IrishTrekie and I have been playing around with those too!Not being against the negative space per se, but I sure do think the "multiple rings"-design doesn't fit into the 23rd century. Thats something I hadn't even thought about. I'm now wondering if they'll also have some 70's inspiration seeing as nearly everything else does!
I like it, so it probably won't look anything like this. Or maybe it will, it's hard to tell at this point. Multiple shuttle types of various sizes and roles would be great though. This was the Jemison from my poster in August 2016 (just really blown up!) I tried to give it a bit of early Matt Jefferies and the roundness of Star Trek II (called Phase II now for obvious reasons!)

So, knowing what we know about the Discovery now, the Shenzhou and John Eaves...I gave it a 2017 makeover! :-) It probably could stand to be lengthened a little, but I guess it depends on the actual size of Discovery. Maybe like in TAS/TNG they have several types of shuttles.

Read back and you can see the reasoning for the assumption those are punchouts.Looking at the extrapolations from the one poster, I have to wonder: Is everyone absolutely positive that the "open spaces" in the saucer aren't just lighted areas? Because I'm thinking that they aren't making drastic changes to the design from the teaser, just adjustments and refinements. Affirmations from folks who aren't on the design team, as close as they may have been to being hired, aren't official information.
Just sayin*, but we'll have to wait and see.

I've read the entire thread, thanks.Read back and you can see the reasoning for the assumption those are punchouts.
Ok I'll check back with you in a few months.I've read the entire thread, thanks.
I've also seen reasoning for many other assumptions for a long, long time--decades, even--that turned out to be wrong (not that anyone ever admitted it). But that's just how it goes. People work out the plot of a movie from a single teaser. They're hardly ever right, but that's just how it goes. Some folks can tell you an entire series arc from a couple of character descriptions. Not much success there either, but that's just how it goes.
I think I'll wait and see.
I was hoping something would have leaked by now too or at the very least forced an early glimpse of the ship.I've been on holiday for a week in Italy......was hoping something happened while I was away. I agree @Saul, we need to start buying RAMA shots!

Have to agree with urbandefault - at the moment we've got two people who've reportedly seen the final design of the Discovery and one person who's extrapolated the design who says they HAVEN'T seen the final design. More than likely the people who've seen it have seen the same picture - so without everyone having seen it, it's understandable there's some apprehension about whether there are gaps in the saucer when it's such a remove from what we've had before outside of the Vengeance.
I'm not saying it doesn't have gaps - but am hoping that the pictures are just misleading and the apparent gaps are just areas of shadow.

I was thinking some shots of the green stuff.
Nice. Still kinda hoping more a Phase II aesthetic finds its way onto the Discovery.
