The New USS Discovery....

Would it be too obvious to have an episode based on Hitchcock's Rear Window, in which a crewman sees a murder occur across the "courtyard" to the other saucer section but can't prove it happened?

My favorite Hitchcock movie (well, this and “Rope”)! Now I want this episode to happen. What's the sci-fi catch?

The crewman dies from Rigellian fever but leaves behind an elaborate AI copy of their brain, which nags their roommate with an implausible plan to bring down the murderer.

The episode will be called The Book of Harry Kim.

Nice idea!
Somebody sees a murder in a crew quarter across. But the ensign assigned to that quarter has a perfect alibi (he was in engineering). And all crewmembers are accounted for. Nobody is missing... What has happened?

Imagine Picard looking out the ready room window and seeing Riker 'socializing'.
"Tea. Earl Grey. Hot." [throws tea into eyes].

So, maybe the "inner donut" has a story purpose. Like the old Planet of the Titans idea, it detaches to land on planets as a mobile base. If this is so, I hope it figures heavily and we get to see it in action quite often.

The donut may well have a story purpose, design purpose, whatever. But the most likely explanation is because "it looks cool and different." Trying to justify every little thing in Star Trek is obsessive and silly. I don't care at all if the donut is explained or not.

Remember, Star Trek is FIRST AND FOREMOST a story telling media. Not a technical manual. I say that as a fan of starships and starship design.

Now I want a documentary series called Star Trek: Tech Manual and each 90 minute episode is an extensive look into a specific class of ship or a particular piece of technology, detailing the in and out-universe history of the design loaded with interviews and diagrams and cutaways and omg

Look up the Trekyards YouTube channel. That's exact what it is.

They have to introduce us to a whole new 23rd. I doubt something like the saucer section donut shape will be explained.
I'm more interested in how they will make donuts. Replicator? Galley?[shudder].

I hope they don't explain it regardless. No one in real life gets into a car and starts explaining why it has four wheels to their passenger. (well, unless they're a driving teacher of some sort, then maybe) They just use it.

Personally, I'm looking forward to an in-universe explanation as to how starship design went from doughnuts to sombreros, then back to doughnuts in an alternate timeline. And yes, I know there's a significant difference between Prime doughnuts and JJdoughnuts.

Here's an explanation.

Experimental ship.

Covert ship (king Daniel)

Ship developed with another species (dount loving ones)
We have seen in the background a Declaration class Enterprise that seems to have been inspired by the vulcan design and there have been Starfleet ships that were of vulcan design (i think). Starfleet ships with vulcan only crews.

What I'm trying to say is, we'll think of something to explain this.
