The New Movies Yea or Nay

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

Yeah, in general, I think inconsistencies make the various alien races more believable. I mean, look at all the different viewpoints and traditions and styles and fashions you see in just a few blocks of any large city city, let alone all of America or the planet Earth. So why expect all the Klingons or Romulans to look and act alike?

The TV shows have to homogenize things a little, just so that we'll recognize a Romulan or Klingon when they show up, but the more variety the better. And, yes, there's no reason why every Klingon who ever appears on Star Trek has to look and act exactly like John Colicos in "Errand in Mercy" just because he was the first Klingon we saw.

I still remembering being excited the first time we met an elderly Klingon nursemaid on TNG. At last! Evidence that there were Klingons from all walks of life, not just fierce soldiers of the Empire!

I want see bohemian Romulans, conservative Romulans, cranky old Romulans, and young upstart Romulans whose new fashions shock their elders. Sophisticated Romulans, vulgar Romulans, glamorous Romulans, and dry, bureaucratic Romulans. All the types that would typically make up a vast interplanetary empire. Heck, chances are the culture varies from planet to planet and province to province. "I can't stand those Romulans from Sector 35-A. Their accents are atrocious, and they're so stuck-up!"

Plus, we have to remember that Star Trek history spans a century or so, so fashions and politics and attitudes are likely to evolve over time, not remain frozen in stasis.

I mean, nobody would expect 21st century Americans to look and act exactly like 19th Century Americans, so why expect 24th century Romulans to be identical to 23rd century Romulans? Imagine objecting that "Modern Family" is full of continuity errors because the humans in that show don't look and act just like the humans in "Leave It to Beaver." :)

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

At no point was tattooing mentioned as a practice in their culture that's the only reason it struck me as strange to change about them. Again this was probably my smallest complaint about the movie yet it's being blown out of the water. I'm glad you stated your opinion but I will stick with mine and that's that I don't like the change.
Well, to me Star Trek is about change and accepting new ideas. As I said, we learn new things about the Trek races with each appearance. It makes them more real. Where's the fun if nothing is new?

It's just an exchange of ideas and opinions. Nothings getting blown out of the water. Trekkies love this stuff. ( well some do). We can ramble on for pages about the silliest, smallest detail. Its not personal its Star Trek.

Yes, to echo the above, there is nothing personal about this disagreement. The Romulans have always been my favorite race from Trek, so the different take was, well, different. Nowhere am I saying that you must agree.

I often quote SFDebris, a science fiction commentator, because he is short and sweet and to the point. In the case of entertainment, Trek specifically, his standpoint is that I won't tell you what to think but I won't be told what to think either.

As for the Romulans, the tattoos are such a minor thing that I don't give it much thought. I'm more annoyed that a Romulan chose an Earth name to go by :wtf:
The first Romulan to have a name was Decius in Balance of Terror. So there is a precedence.

A lot of Aliens have human names.

Spock

Kang

Kira Nerys

Dax

Odo

Chang

Guinan

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

It's spelled, "Nero," but in Romulan it's pronounced, "throat warbler mangrove."

Why not, "Nero?" From the beginning in Trek, the presentation of Romulans has drawn from ancient Roman culture, from the centurion in "Balance of Terror" up to the Romulan Senate and even the Remans.

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

The only time we saw TOS Uhura act anything like that was in "Mirror Mirror" when she had to handle the alt-Sulu on the bridge without Kirk or anyone else around. The difference is that she had to convey how scared she was to Kirk and get his reassurance she could do it before she did it. This Uhura basically says, "Get the hell out of my way and let me do my job." Then when it gets tough, she groins the Klingon with his own knife. Much better.
I'll have to watch Mirror Mirror today and confirm that, Franklin. But yes, the Abramsverse Uhura can be scared and we can be scared for her, but she does her job and stands up to Kirk to do it.

I think you have it reversed. My fault, because I can see now how what I posted could be misread. I meant the TOS Uhura handled herself well against alt-Sulu in "M-M", but she was the one who had to first act scared to do it and needed Kirk to reassure her that she could and they needed her. This was the era of soft-focus on women on TV after all, and she had to show her vulnerable side. Uhura in STID was the one that stepped right up and said let me do my job.

Then again, if that's what you meant, and I misread you, my apologies.

I'm not saying that there is not precedence in universe for such naming. Just that it struck me as odd when first reading promotional material.

Now, I don't mind the name or the tattoos because he has become one of my favorite Trek villains. The rest is just minor details :)

That's what I meant. Though I am sure she was scared in STID, she said, "Let me do my job, Captain. The only way for us to stand a chance is if I talk to these big guys. If you go out there with guns blazing, we're dead." That's courage.

Re: The New Movies Yay or Nay

I find the new movies entertaining... within the context of how movies are made today.

As for it representing Star Trek, I don't feel it really does. It's a kind of "alternate universe" (as JJ Abrams did suggest and make clear with the destruction of Vulcan) here on Earth. It will have a few more movies, then it will be done. JJ Abrams will be working on Star Wars sequels and other projects.

For me TOS is the "real" Star Trek, and always will be. "Next Generation" comes in with a very close second. They did a terrific job. It does feel like Star Trek. The others that followed gradually drifted away... with Enterprise being the furthest. Yet still, compared to other sci-fi series ST Enterprise was a fine series and I really wish they'd given it a little more time for shaking out a longer term run. It could have gone 7 seasons, the way it was developing IMHO.

So Yay or Nay? I guess I'm Nay... but not in a bad way.

Btw, I think Zachary Quinto did a phenomenal job playing Spock. He's the most believable for me.

I feel we have very similar opinions. The idea of an alternate universe kind of put me off. Along with a few other things.

Yep, the original brief for them was "Roman Empire in space". It's a bit like complaining that the Thor movies stick too close to Norse mythology (although that actually makes more sense in the Marvel Universe, since they really are supposed to be the Norse Gods)
