I'll just echo what others have said and stick with the old Monopoly. Though, I will admit to owning the millennium edition one with the translucent money and updated tokens.

The new board looks ugly and claustrophobic. As for getting $2,000,000 for passing go...WTF?

Well, since you're buying real estate, they probably figured they'd go with more realistic numbers. I really don't think you can buy an entire avenue for $60 these days...

I dont have a problem with adding a couple of 0's to the end of the prices.

Fair enough, I suppose... It just seems like a lot of money to get for passing go. It should lead to some interesting conversations about allowance money.

I also own the millennium edition. But the game play in that version is exactly the same as the original. It's just "futurized" for the 21st century with translucent money and updated versions of the tokens. The board, properties, prices and gameplay are just like it's always been.

Same here, I've never heard of Settlers Of Catan, nor do I know of any other popular German-Style board games in the US... The only games I've noticed getting somewhat bigger recently that aren't board games like Monopoly and such are games like Fluxx and other card games... And well, everyone knows Uno.

You don't hang out in the same circles I do. Get over to BoardGameGeek and you'll see that the "German style board game" is very, very popular indeed.

My hubby and his circle of friends have weekly game nights and monthly game DAYS, and Settlers is one of their all-time favorites. I got sucked into all this when we got married, so now I'm a hard-core board-gamer, as well.
Settlers of Cataan, Ticket to Ride, Power Grid, Pillars of the Earth, Agricola, Pandemic, Carcassone, even the new Battlestar Galactica game are all very fun, although most are fairly complicated (except TICKET).

That said, I have played MegaMonopoly and the Millennium edition and found them both very enjoyable. They were faster and had a few more options, but it was the same basic game. I think using dumb little plastic cards will be a mistake; it will really take away from the game. I mean, as a kid, you learn about buying and selling, making money and making change by playing with those colored little bills. I think that's part of the fun--having that stack of bills in front of you while your opponent has just a few singles left---that's a good feeling.

I'd prefer my board games to not require batteries. I really hate this trend of adding electronic sound effects and crap to just about every single toy and game made. It's actually difficult to find toys in the major stores that don't need batteries.

... Sorry about the little rant there.

As for German style gaming, I discovered Carcassonne several months ago, and my family loves it. Unfortunately, you won't find games like that in the major stores like Target or Walmart. Actually, I'm pretty sure I bought the only copy available in the entire city.
