I for one was very surprised at Culber’s death. I would think a vast majority wouldn’t have seen it coming just prior.

I was kind of surprised at Culber's death but it became clear early on in the scene where he does die that it would be him being killed before the scene ends. He might as well asked Tyler to hold a hammer while he turns his back to him so he can study a padd report so intently that any motion or sound will be unnoticed, all of this happening after he tells him he is going to report him to the Captain and make sure he ends up in a lab for the rest of his life. All of this happening of course with nobody else in the room.

I don't find making it obvious someone is about to die in the scene were it happens ...telegraphing it. I personally call it good suspense.

Ash was going to kill at least one of the main or prominent secondary characters.

Culber was (imo) the best candidate,

Some of the characters were likely off limits (too important to the story), of those not off limits he was the most likely to discover Ash's deep dark secret and "require" killing.

Culber's murder was obvious coming once Ash obviously was a Klingon (somehow) in disguise.

I thought he would be off limits since he was married and part of the very first gay romance of the very first gay character in Trek. I actually respect that they defied expectations on that level though I guess it also played into a cliche about how gay characters are often killed. I knew Ash was going to eventually be found out as well but i'm not sure if I saw him murdering someone. I'm not sure how I thought the reveal would come. Maybe a murder attempt on Burnham or trying to sabatage the ship.

It did give him a tragedy but I thought any tragedy he would have would come from the side effects of the spore drive. That's one of the other reasons I didn't think Culber was going to die so soon as well. I thought he would be around also in a doctor capacity to help him through that. I'm still a little confused about that change of personality. Was that mirror Stamets or was it regular Stamets who was having some of mirror Stamets memories?
