The "new" Enterprise

Well the shields are, supposedly incompressible, so theoretically either the debris should move or the ship should move.

No biggie though, it's no dealbreaker..

We saw no "shields" as they have been depicted in the TV shows. If anything, the shields only block phasers. Missles seem to tear up the hulls of any ship they hit.

I think by the "are our shields even up" on the Kelvin that the late 24th century tech could pass right through early to mid-23rd century shielding.

I loved the Enterprise! The first shot of her in space (which I guessed would be the first after the pic we got of her last year) was absolutely stunning. No need for an introduction, she IS the U.S.S. Enterprise.

I love the interiors as well, even the lower decks, for the most part. There were only a few moments when the 'brewery" sets bothered me, but it was only a minor occurrence.

Did anyone else notice the moving parts on the exterior of the ship? The "fins" on the back of the nacelles split apart into four or five sections and extend up and away slightly from the nacelle when going to warp, and the "warp coils" glow bright blue underneath. Its subtle, but a really cool effect I think. It sells the idea of these as powerful machines, and adds another layer of motion and dynamism.

The main Deflector also has pulsing points of light or something. Its hard to describe, and I only noticed the second time I saw the movie, but there is definitly motion to the deflector. Its another subtle effect, but I like it.

I have a theory: As Scotty enthused over the starship in the movie, gleefully exclaiming something along the lines of: 'I can't wait to get my hands on her lovely nacelles..." - I predict that as Chief Engineer of Enterprise in the sequel, he will have modified and maybe even refit the NCC-1701 somewhat - perhaps not so dramatic a change (as seen in the TOS enterprise becoming the TMP Refit version), but maybe the connie will start to evolve again, into something akin to the Refit enterprise, but updated due to the influence of this new timeline...

:techman: That is my prediction!!!

You have a brilliant signature.

I like your post too, but I'm just saying, I saw it and had to play it, thinking there's no chance I'd recognize it, but of course I did.

Made me smile.

Carry on.

Overall, I liked the new Enterprise. It has that new-car feel (and smell, probably!) and I happen to like the retro-industrial look of the engine room. It looks more like what most people think an engine room should look like, with tubes and pipes and so forth. I know some people don't like it, but I dig it.

I also like how brightly lit most of the other sets are. I like the bridge, too. The transporter room I wasn't too crazy about, esp. the big bulging half-dome in the middle, but that's just me, I guess.

Now, as we establish "new canon," I wonder if this ship will still be called Constitution-class, or, as I hope, it gets the name "Enterprise-class," being the flagship of the Federation. Hope we see other ships like it in the fleet, too, in the next movie. That would be an homage to TOS where that class was reused for all the other starships we saw (Constellation, Defiant, Exeter, etc.)

Yeah, that seems a plausible idea to me. However, I don't think that this potential trilogy will deal with the time the Enterprise gets refitted as in TMP.

Most probably we will see this one in all movies to come out in this series... and I personally, kind of like that fact.

Now that I've seen the movie I like the new ship. I mean, I always did kinda like it, though the curved nacelle strutts used to bother me, but up on the big screen, in motion it's beautiful.

The only minor nitpick I had -

The only thing that bugged me a little watching the movie, and maybe I missed something but, when they come out of warp near Vulcan and there is all that debris floating around, they have their shields up, right? So why is it the top of of one of the nacelles gets scraped by a large piece of debris and tiles fly off of it?
did the tiles actually come off the enterprise or was it from the debris the enterprise hit? i couldnt tell.

Pretty sure they are the Enterprise's hull-plates.

Overall I really liked the ship but you'd have to put me down with those who didn't like the engine room - it simply looked wrong to me like they were wondering around a pipe factory or water treatment plant.

Yeah... Deuterium in the engines and all that...

Hi fellow fans,
Obviously, there is going to be a line in the sand with the younger/newer trekkers as opposed to we ahem, more mature "puritan" trekkers. I saw the movie and didn't really care for the new Enterprise. I believe abrams could've stayed at least closer to the classic design with the ship and gadgets. If he would've changed the falcon in Star Wars there would've been a civil war with the fans. I guess maybe the original classic engineers of the ship and gadgets were on the Kelvin and didn't make it out... maybe. while were on the subject... why were federation personel on the kelvin wearing an enterprise delta shield on their uniform before nero arrived? I feel it would've been more believable if they would've showed the old timeline then changed it as they did in the next gen episode with the Enterprise C.
On a positive note, I believe that this cast can be trusted to pass the torch of the classic crew to boldly go again. Since Paramount truly rebooted the series now they can re-tell stories with a new twist. In the words of the real Captain Kirk... "I miss my old chair"

I have no idea what that means. I really don't care what the made-up technobabble of star trek says, I simply didn't like the set for the engine room, it had no visual appeal to me.

The new look of engineering didn't bother me, but then I did notice it. It reminded me of a brewery tour I took once.

Thoughts of the reboot Enterprise:

1. I agree some of these interiors would not fit in the exteriors. It's like showing a shot of my house and then you step into the East Room of the White House.

2. On the other hand, I want to rave about the exterior shots. We saw the Kelvin and Enterprise from lots and lots of never-seen-before angles. I especially liked shots where a ship was upside down relative to some other ship or planet. Until now, the Enterprise would face other ships always oriented upside right in the same 2D plane. Even in Wrath of Khan where 3D battle was discussed, the ships stayed right side up in relation to one another. I love that Abrams showed that there really is no universal top or bottom in space.

The external shots were indeed lush - that first moment with the Kelvin, I had a massive grin.

Overall, I liked it. On the exterior, the nacelles were the weakest part though, but not a deal breaker. It all flowed together very well. I still prefer the movie refit version but they did a good job with this one. I'd rate the new ship higher than a lot of the previous Trek ships: 1701-D, Voyager, the NX, etc.

I also liked the interior. It seemed to be highly inspired by "The Cage" bridge and that story in general is a favorite of mine. I didn't care for the water pipes but that was my only complaint. Oh, I missed the sliders for the transporter! ;)

Mr Awe

It seems I'm in the minority about seriously disliking the bridge?

I liked the Kelvin's and the Kobayashi Maru's but I found the Enterprise's confusing and way too glitzy.
The camera was overly frenetic on an already complicated looking set. It felt like it'd been shot with a spherical camera on rollarskates.

It didn't retain enough of the original sets shape. Spock's console, for instance has now an ugly peice of glass and another station between him and the captain's chair (which wasn't dipped enough to give it that bridgey look)

I hope they do something about the consoles and stuff...they looked quite barren and lifeless.

I love the nuE and engineering! Here's a good side-by-side shot of the TOS E, the TMP E and nuE.
