The "new" Enterprise

I was rather undecided about the Enterprise as a whole until I saw the movie. The first pictures had me jazzed since it incorporated elements from TOS movie Enterprise, and I've always loved that design. When I finally got my hands on the toy, I really liked it since the proportions worked a lot better in 3D than I expected. Once I saw it on film it all came together and this Enterprise became the "heroic character" I remember from my youth.

I agree engineering's design was a bit jarring. However, I did notice they really tried to color and light it in the 60's aesthetic colors. There were a lot of oranges and reds in there that helped link it (in my mind at least) to "classic engineering". That said, I wouldn't mind if they did a new set in the future that had the more traditional looking warp core visible as a centerpiece.

The problem with Engineering isn't the aesthetic, it's the fact that the room appears to be fifty metres wide and entirely uncompartmentalised. One gets the distinct impression that the Enterprise is a TARDIS, also that a single hull breach will vent the entire secondary hull to space.

Just saying...

The camera pulls back far enough to reveal sprawling pipes and machinery over a far larger area than that on several occasions. We'll probably have to wait for the DVD to nitpick individual shots like that, though.

It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the film at all, mind you.

Personally, I had second thoughts about engineering, the nacelles, all the lights and the too-much-like-TOS-look before I saw the movie.

After seeing it, it all fits (well, except Engineering). I love the new white lady! She's a beauty, she is.

To me, the whole problem with engineering is that it was in no way reminiscent of the original TOS engineering area. The bridge was somewhat, but engineering looked like they just found some factory somewhere and dressed it up a bit. Very badly done. I can live with the bridge and the corridors, but engineering was ridiculous.

I missed a gigantic, resonating and pulsating warp core. Like a long lost lover, I missed it.

Looked great, inside and out. The only thing I didn't like that much was engineering. Seemed too big and chaotic.

Why is it out of place?
Because it doesn't look like the other work- and living-areas on the ship?
Did the Titanic's engine-room feel out of place? Does the engine-room of any modern see-faring vessel feel out of place with the crew- and/or passenger-areas?

Basically two things upset me quite a lot:

1. its dimensions: at times it looked as bis as the interior of a Borg cube... frankly I don't see how it could ever fit inside the Enterprise, but maybe it was just my impression.
2. the aesthetics of it: I understand what you're saying, but that's not a ship from 1912. I bet even without going to the extreme tidyness of starships we're used to (which btw I love), I thought a more futuristic compromised look could have been designed. It simply didn't fit at all to my eyes

I too was weary about this Enterprise, but having scene it I thought it was the best yet. The computer visuals are stunning, I really likethe new look of the inside. And finaly the engine room makes sense. It really felt like a working starship and not just some pristine sets.

For me, nothing beats the TMP Enterprise, but that doesn't mean that I hate the new ship at all. I think it's cool.

Loved the bridge, because it actually looked like a command center with lots of control panels and personnel. I thought previous bridges were either too small or too sparsely crewed for a very complex starship, IMO.

And while I prefer the TMP engine room the most, I do like the sprawling industrial factory-style of the movie engine room. It's very different than what we're used to, I grant you, but it truly looked like what the bowels of the ship would really look like to me.

And I finally understood why the ship has such large warp nacelles, because they look tons better at a distance than close up...

I loved the new Enterprise. And the thing that people always forgets is JJ is trying to bring ST closer to us, that engineering section reminded me of what I thought a ships engineering from our time looks like (a ship in the sea, I mean).

And when Enterprised warped in to the debris field, I think the only reason the saucer hit the Enterprise was because perhaps the shields are more for the weapons and pressure againts the hull. For example, if you fire a photon torpedo at the ship, it will detonate as soon as it hits the shields, but when something that doesn't detonate, or simply comes close to the ship, the deflector, not the shields is what protects the ship from getting hit.

Did anyone else notice, that when the Enterprise was trying to dodge what I can only presume was another ships saucer section, did anyone else thing the saucer section of that ship was bigger than the whole Enterprise? Or atleast bigger than the Enterprise's.

I'm glad engineering looked like engineering, not a science museum exposition.

My only disappointment was engineering. I would have preferred they built a set that incorporated more futuristic design elements along with pipes and valves. I'm okay with wanting to make it look more functional and real, but to actually go and film on-location like that and try to pass it off as the Enterprise - and to not even include the warp core! - was a bad decision.

Like a bunch of people have already said, I liked the exterior and the bridge and the hallways but didn't like the engineering decks at all. I'll again just agreee with what people have already said, the spaces were too big to realistically fit on the enterprise, they looked too dated, etc. Good movie, just wish they would have put more effort into engineering.

Also, I hated the Scotty in the water tube bit. :S

I loved everything except engineering.

If they'd have used the pipes etc, but CGI'd in the curved or angled walls of the Enterprise hull, or even shown a transition corridor moving from the glossy white to the the engineering section. Hell, even a couple of observation widows showing the interior beyond engineering, it would have been easier to believe.

I think it would have been better to leave the exterior almost identical to TOS. I still like the nuEnterprise though. Engineering did have a bit too much of a Tardis feel to it - it was too big. The bridge was dissappointing. I dont know why, but it didnt have a Star Trek feel to it.

Why are the nacelles angled downward in these pictures? They appeared to be normal (i.e. parallel to the saucer) in the movie.

Your nacelles are drooping down. That because the Edselprise has ugly, to large warp drive units! LOL

Hi, I've looked but cannot find anything about peoples thoughts on the new ship.

For me the ship is the main chaaracter in Star Trek (I think Harve Bennet said something similar). I just cannot take to this new look Enterprise.

The Nacelles are stupid.

Engineering is stupid, what is with the whole "retro-industrial look", and what exactly do the miles of water tubes do, other than add to the quite humourous scene where Scotty gets beamed into one?

The bridge isn't great, too brightly lit, as are the corridors.

The transporter doesn't look very functional with those "domed pads".

I'd be interested to hear others point's of view.
