The New Enterprise Reveald

Jefferies

So here she is, the new Enterprise.

Personally, I think the nacelles are grotesque and the deflector has a somewhat unfinished look to it. Also, the secondary hull is poking out from under the neck a bit too fiercely for my taste. I appreciate the retro-curvey style they went for and the primary hull looks good. However, in summary, it's not exactly what I would call an inspired homage to the original. Its more like a copy of the refit with a bit of wackyness thrown in to set its self apart.

So what are your reasons for liking/disliking it? Are you happy this might serve as a standard for future designs, like the refit Coni did after TMP?

P.S. I know there is a thread about this in the Trek XI forum but I was interested in what the modellers and design fans think about this.

The whole secondary hull is way too close to the saucer. It's like they took the whole thing and shifted it forward, and it makes the whole ship look cramped.

I would feel better if those engine caps were lit up red, maybe at warp? Ther appears to be a small ship directly in front of the camera in this shot obscuring some of the secondary hull. It looks like a bit like a kit bash of TMP main hull, cut up portions of the Ent-D second hull and (this impression just popped into my head) is it just me or do the nacelles look just like the headlights/fenders off of some car from the 50's?

I can see some beauty lines I could learn to appreciate. Like the Ent-D, it will grow on me. Not instant love like the TMP refit.

Oh, and judging by the number of window "rows" on the saucer edge. It's not scaled up as large as I had feared.

Having taken a second look, I must say, I am a bit annoyed that they apparently didn't even consider taking Jefferies original into account. As if they felt that his design can't be made to look modern. Now, Vector's last rendition proved that sentiment to be totally wrong. If you haven't seen it I encourage you to make a comparison. With the millions they had to build this, surely they could have found a way to be faithful, original and pleasing to the eye all at the same time?

I like the textures, and also the neck and the shape of the deflector area.

However, the secondary hull (from this view at least) doesn't seem to 'flow' nicely, mostly because it seems stick out too much, losing the sense of speed and forward motion suggested by the neck.

But I don't really mind the funky 50s space age nacelles.

Wow...eesh, ?...Hmmm.

Boy my perceptions were WAY off...I didn't see the curvy things as being located on the cowls...still can't see the fins.

It's like a mixture of every enterprise...TOS, TMP, TNG, Gabe...

Couple things.
Based on this image we can guess that the Kelvin has a full size (for the movie version) second hull as the second hull is now not much larger than the deflector dish in cross-section. This design continues the trend in recent years of the "neck" being less of a distinctive entity and more a part of the second hull.
Strangely enough, if you look at the ship upside down (!) you can get the distinct impression of a TOS phaser pistol from the neck/secondary hull.

My main dislike is the secondary hull/neck - disproportionate, misaligned, etc. I love the nacelles, think the saucer should've looked a bit less like the refit and more like that from TOS... but all in all I'm happy. Could've been a lot worse. I would've stuck closer to the original design, but this isn't bad. I can't wait to see more.

Great design but yeah the saucer part look more like the refitted one from TMP and the same with the deflector dish too.

I have to agree. I'm not exactly 'happy' but it could have been much worse and I think I'll get used to it eventually. The nacelles don't really bother me that much. The dish doesn't bother me that much either. All in all, I think I'd still rather have had a simpler version of the Koerner Enterprise.

Really, though, would it have killed them to stretch the neck about twenty meters downward and slightly enlarge and push the secondary hull back about twenty? I would love to see (and perhaps will do myself) a drawing of these 'pieces' conformed to TOS proportions.

:rommie:

The engine hull is terribly puny looking.

I notice the saucer undercut is gone. The side of the neck has the same vertical marking as in TMP, so I'm guessing the ship's core is layed out in that way.

The neck is pure Enterprise-D. With the bisected engine hull, extremely large aft cutout, and the whole hull moved fwd, there doesn't seem to be room for the hangar in the traditional location. Perhaps it has been moved to the neck a la ENT-D.

The nacelles look strange.

The dish has a more Pike-Era diameter - big. Which is kinda awkward.

The underside of the saucer is devoid of any real detail, which makes it look kinda unfinished.

There are no landing arm triangles on the saucer.

Overall very meh. Not the image of power and badassery I was expecting. It has more of a cruise-ship vibe like the ENT-D.

I have very conflicting feelings about this image. Is this bona fide?

The overall design looks too TMP/TNG-ish, especially the hull textures and saucer "look".

I just do not understand why they went to all the trouble of pouring millions into a "remake", and then recycle so many things (especially the TMPish texture, and the hull lighting, etc.) only to go back around again and repudiate the original Jefferies design. It repudiates the Original, distorting TMP and TNG concepts, but then fails to really justify it by giving us a "new" design sense. The only thing that stands out as a refreshingly original idea that catches my eye is the elimination of the saucer's belly undercut-ring.

The nacelles remind me of "the planet killer" from the TOS outing "The Doomsday Machine".

Nowhere am I more conflicted than about the interconnecting dorsal/neck. I like the idea of "thinking outside the box", and it does offer certain design possibilities, namely increased usable interior volume. I have never been a fan of the TMP torpedo bay relocation. Looks like it was recycled/rejuvenated here, and I still prefer it being housed in the lower saucer. If they don't like the saucer idea, why not try something fresh like redesigning the nacelle pylons and putting torpedo banks in the base of the pylons?

The secondary hull really sucks. I like the new dish, but the ultra-curvy hull looks like a plastic model. One really weird thing about this "remake" is that much of the secondary hull is smooth with no features, not even windows, but little parts here and there are intricately detailed. It's a jarring discontinuity that gives it a "mutt look".

The nacelles look stupid, but the nacelle pylons really look stupid! I do not understand the orientation. if the nacelles connect to an engine room in the secondary hull, why do the pylons look like they are arising from the hangar deck?

And one more thing: those black patches on the saucer... are those phaser banks? If they are, they look like another botched recycle of the TMP Enterprise. Why? Why not try something really new, or at least, new-er, like the retractable phase cannon ports from ENTERPRISE? As far as I can see, Archer's NX-01 looks more interesting than this botch.

Why are there lights shining on the saucer? They seem to have forgotten the registry, so they're just...lighting up the TMP phaser banks or something? WTF?

I think it looks a bit better this way ...

From a cohesive design standpoint your altered version makes A LOT more sense. Makes the model flow. Although, I am unsure if it would make me like it. But I could probably warm to it over time IF this change were made.
