The New Artist's Thread (Warning: Large Image Size)

Re: The New Artist's Thread

It's a WIP, I'm making things up as I'm going along, my artwork here is practicing, but it looks like I'm getting better.

Re: The New Artist's Thread

Well, it looks pretty nice, but I did think it appeared unfinished.

Re: The New Artist's Thread

Personally I've found that easy to avoid. I'm also able to effortlessly avoid resembling Norman Rockwell and Michael Whelan.

Re: The New Artist's Thread

When my painting work gets more developed, I'll try to avoid doing paintings similar to the ones done by Thomas Kinkade.

I've been there! I sat drawing a picture on that bridge, actually. My problem is patience. I enjoy painting but I'm fast. I think I could paint a picture like that, but I don't know if I could spend so much time on one picture.

Now the issue comes to pricing. I want to sell, but I've no idea what to sell for. I haven't made a name for myself, I'm just starting out, I know I've got talent but I've very little experience. I have to make money enough to cover the time and supplies -- so maybe $200-$300 for the larger work? Does that seem reasonable? After seeing some of the mediocre to downright horrible paintings on Etsy posted at $10,000 or more, part of me just wants to throw out a massively high price just to see if some one would bite!

Another option would be to make and sell prints. My teaching schedule gives me Tuesdays and two Fridays a month off. I'm considering joining the Union Square artist's market. In NYC the only rules to street vending are that you have a taxation licence, that the sidewalk is at least 12 feet wide, and that you have some sort of structure on which to place your wares, i.e. a folding table, box, or easel.

I have no idea what a reasonable price is for originals, but I would definitely start with prints. You can easily sell them through deviantArt and CafePress, among other places (in fact, I happen to know you've already sold at least one ;)). You can also attach your artwork to other items like calendars and postcards and stuff, which can help it get around (because the real problem with selling this stuff is advertising).

I especially like the airship. But Reed Richards doesn't look right; he should have longer legs and his profile is off.

This is a new thread for artists, because I cannot find (or be bothered to search for) the old ones. It strikes me that the title can be read to mean this is a thread for new artists, which is somewhat appropriate, for while I am not a new artist, I am a new painter. This is a thread for visual artists to share their work of any medium, tell us a little bit about what you've done, ask for tips, and share inspirations.

I've been back in New York a week now, finally home with my supplies, and I painted my 5th picture this week. I'm still learning, as I only started painting a few months ago and this is my 5th painting ever, so it's not the greatest. Still, I'm pleased with how it came out for the most part. I'd greatly appreciate tips and/or constructive criticism!

I'd love to see what other Trekkie artists are doing.
I like it, but what's up with the huge bush?:)

I will not go to the conceptart thingy because they are to "anal" about their art and what is art and why it is art. and of-course the importance of all art that being what it is as concepts that don't really apply here...

i know they have gone thru lists of moderators and such and back five or more years ago they did not really understand art beyond the act of intimidations that really does not bother me since I might think about there site once a year I will not waste any amount of time on it. once they closed down all the uploads I did ... etc there back years ago..

see I barely go to the DA spot and or renderosity.com //concidering I developed the frame work for concept structured thought beyond objective subjectiveness ,, ahhh don't get me started just the name conceptart reminds how much shit they stole ...

some concepts I was developing when they offed my account :P
