The Neutral Zone

From what I've heard, the Borg were supposed to be insectoid like creatures, but they neither had a concept nor the money to make a quick follow up on "The Neutral Zone". I even read somewhere that the Borg were supposed to be connected to the aliens in "The Conspiracy" ... don't ask me where I read it!

Also the Borg were going to destroy Romulus in that aborted arc. Yeah, the insect concept of the "Borg" had them related to the Conspiracy aliens. It's mentioned in the TNG Companion.

I think it was shame they couldn't use the parasite creatures again in future episodes.

Off Topic: Shameless plug for the ongoing "Sword of Damocles" story arc in the audio series Star Trek: Excelsior: log on to www.starshipexcelsior for one version of the rest of the story.

On Topic: It really is amazing that such a potentially rich source of stories was simply abandoned.

The parasites would have needed a lot of writing skill to become interesting again. They were a fairly ho-hum threat: the twin means of detecting them (loss of memory and a protruding breathing tube) were given in the introductory episode already, and apparently there were no lasting effects from possession. The only thing that was left vague was their ultimate aim, but it appeared to be a rather straightforward invasion plot here; there'd be little potential for upping the ante later on.

The Borg became interesting fairly gradually; "Q Who?" and "Best of Both Worlds" still left a lot to be explored and invented and reinterpreted. But the parasites would only have had one shot for reigniting the storytelling spark. If their possible return in "Q Who?" had not been an intriguing reboot where mystery was restored to their nature, I fear they'd have become a villain even less convincing than the Ferengi.

To be honest, I thought the Parasites were used up after "Conspiracy" AND the Borg were done as an enemy after BOBW.

I think it could be rewritten that the parasites were fleeing their part of the galaxy because their host species were being already assimilated....
