This rotational energy is interesting because there is directionality to the rotating system. That means, the gravitational waves move, at different moments in their passing, both with the direction of rotation, and against the direction of rotation. That is not a symmetrical system.

the lecturer mentions ocean waves and how one would expect the person floating on the surface to be displaced by a passing wave, then return to their exact position from before. However, it doesn't work like that because ocean waves act in a uni-directional energy system. Gravity acts upon the floating object to move its position from the start point so it can't return to its original position after the wave passes.

Given that a transverse wave moves in one direction, and gravity accelerates in a perpendicular direction, the floating object, when lifted on the incline of the oncoming wave, will "surf" on that leading face because of gravity, causing it to remain with the wave for longer than the medium that makes up the wave would dictate. Then, after the wave passes, the floating object surfs down the back slope of the wave, ideally, to return to its original position, except... . Because the wave is moving in one direction, the surfing on the front face lasts a lot longer than the surfing on the back face.

In essence, the floating object remains is on the leading slope longer than the medium of the wave takes to lift, and less time on the back slope than it takes the medium of the wave to fall. Thus, directional movement of the wave and gravity conspire to produce a "memory" in the system.
