The Naked Time Ep

I'm still plugging along reading William Shatner's "Memories" book. I was reading some background about the Naked Time ep. There was a lot of heated discussions about how Spock would react when he was affected by the disease. When they were shooting an ep they HAD to be finished by 6:18pm otherwise they risked going overtime and the studio did NOT want that.
Leonard Nimoy spoke to the director about a scene they had where Spock just broke down crying in public and then they would move onto someone else. Leonard told him he would not do something like that, that he would go someplace private and he would have an inner dual with his Vulcan and Human halves. I believe that Leonard did go to Gene with his concerns. He and Gene butted heads many times over Leonard's concerns for his character.

The scene we see in the briefing room took place at the very end of the shooting day, when there was very little time to waste. Lighting and sound and dolly had to be ready to roll and be positioned where they needed to be. Leonard did that brilliant scene unscripted, something I didn't know about. It was amazing.

One thing that baffles me is that Gene Roddenberry fought so hard to have the Spock character as part of his show. When he had to get rid of someone from the "Cage" he got rid of Number One. He wanted Spock because he clearly showed that it was an intergalactic group and not just Human. Leonard fleshed out the character made it his own and contributed so many things to the character. The Vulcan nerve pinch and salute. And he was the one who said Vulcans are a hand oriented people. That was instrumental when Mark Lenard and Jane Wyatt came on board as his parents. They came up with the finger touches.
So Leonard took portraying Spock very seriously (after those initial concerns about whether playing a pointed eared alien was going to be taken seriously.)

To me it sounded like Gene got more angry every time Leonard came to him with a concern. I'm glad that Leonard stood up to the ptb cause I feel we fans reaped the benefits.

That scene is the thing that makes the episode worthwhile. It's the dramatic core of it. It's so strange to think of their making the episode with no thought of that scene, that it was stuck in at the last minute. Thank you, Leonard Nimoy.

Nimoy had to show It was worse for a Vulcan than a human when exposed to the virus as Vulcans have little resistance to alcohol apparently!
