The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through Trek

GhostFaceSaint

Fleet Captain

This is obviously a response to the least relatable characters thread. So who do you identify with, who do you relate to the most, who are your favorite characters, please feel free to give many examples and details telling us why.:klingon:

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

The Holy Trinity of Star Trek: Kirk, Spock & McCoy

To me, they ARE Star Trek. Perhaps it is why I loved the new movie so much. One can stand up in a theater or mall and shout those three names and someone will yell back, "Trekkie!" or "Star Trek!" They are iconic and everyone can relate to at least one of those characters.

Aside from them, I liked Wesley Crusher and Dr. Pulaski... two of Trek's least favorite characters (apparently). I was accused of being like Wesley at his age, so I easily identified with him and the pressure he was under to always be perfect. Diana Muldaur... I had a crush on her ever since her first appearance on TOS and her dual belly-button appearance on Genesis II! I thought she made a good foil for the oh-so-self-righteous Picard. She had more hutzpah than anyone and ended up giving her life for her patients. Her attitude toward Data (pronounced dah-tah:guffaw:) gave a little necessary conflict to the humdrum we-all-think-alike-because-we-are-advanced utopia of TNG, IMO.:bolian:

my favorite star trek charcter that I most relate with is that really annoying engineer that comes onto the enterprise-d to help jordy. I cant remember her name right now, but she talks alot and gets nervous...yep sounds like me.

Sonya Gomez?

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

Miles Edward O'Brien! :D

I really have no idea who my all-time favorite would be (but someone from DS9, and O'Brien would definitely be up there), but O'Brien by far wins the most relatable and identifiable character if you ask me. And he's just a great character that has had some amazing development considering he started out as just a nameless redshirt!

O'Brien was the everyman. He was a working guy who was good at what he did through experience, and dealt with stuff that a lot of guys deal with. Trouble with the wife, a friend who ya like but annoys ya sometimes, needing to feel useful (as a part of the station), etc.

As soon as Riker put on the beard he looked, talked, and acted just like my father so I really looked up to him as a kid and identified with him a great deal.

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

I have always loved Kira, bnecause I can relate to her many ways... not that I have ever taken up arms or blown people up, or been a soldier, let alone a terrorist. But there are still lots of things about her that I can relate to. Which doesn't mean that I think she's perfect or that there weren't many occasions where I felt she was wrong, and that she needed a lot of personal growth and soul-searching.

I also find Ro quite relatable - for some reason, I don't feel as close to her as to Kira, maybe because she didn't have that many episodes or that much development, but I can certainly relate to someone who is that stubborn, unyielding and even abrasive and tends to get in conflict and make herself an outcast through it, because I've been there and done that a few times in the past, especially when I was younger and less well-adjusted.

Spock is someone who is very different from me in many ways, but I can really relate to some things about him - and on the other hand, I can really relate to the unfortunate women who fall in love with him... I've been there on both sides - I know how frustrating it is to love someone who has a problem with showing their feelings, but I've also been accused of being that person, and I know how difficult it is when you have problems with connecting with people that way.

edit: also, K'ehleyr. I relate to her because she is strong, independent, doesn't care for people trying to restrain her freedom, and rebels against some of her culture's traditions and beliefs that she recognizes as fake, outdated or hypocritical.

Also, sometimes you don't need to identify and have the same experiences or traits as a certain character in order to relate to them. They may be similar to someone you know, or maybe they are just so well written and acted that you can understand them and feel for them. For instance, Odo - even though I may not have had similar experiences as he did, there was so much emotion in his story I couldn't possibly not feel for him. Besides, I guess I tend to relate to pretty much any character who feels like an outsider, be it Spock, Odo or even Data. I think that so many people can relate to Data even though he is an android, because he comes off as a nerdy outsider trying to fit in, something that is very easy to relate to for many people.

Favorite - Trip because he comes across like the guy next door. The person you call if your car breaks down and you need someone to come and get you, and maybe even fix it.

Relatable - Jordie. He gets excited about tech, loves new things and new experiences, and everyone wants him to make things work. That's me.

Identifiable - Dr. Polaski. She reminds me of the teacher's pet in the first grade that tattles when you do something and brags about her A's.

Riker or Geordi. Two guys I'd love to have a beer with.

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

My favorite characters - Sisko, Kira, Bashir, Garak, O'Brien, Kirk, Spock, Janeway, Chakotay, Trip.

These were always my favorite characters to watch on each of the shows. I can especially watch Bashir and Garak or Bashir and O'Brien all day long. Great banter in those two friendships.

And Sisko...well, he's such a bad-ass. So cool under pressure. I think my favorite line of his in all of DS9 is the line in Favor the Bold:

"There's an old saying: Fortune favors the Bold. Well...I guess we're about to find out."

Vastly outnumbered and out gunned by Dominion forces...and he's just so damn COOL. :D

Characters I can relate to the most - Kira, B'Elanna Torres, Tom Paris, Julian Bashir.

Let's just say I can very easily relate to the pain, anger, and feelings of betrayal that come along with being wronged by alot of people over a long period of time. And I know what it's like to feel misunderstood or unable to translate 'book smarts' into 'street smarts' in some situations.

I'll leave it to 'Favorites'...It'll sound like a trend, but-TOS-Kirk/Spock /McCoy..Enterprise-Archer/Trip/T'Pol....TNG-Picard/ Riker/ Data....I almost hate to exclude the others, or in TOS, 'Classic' as they are...DS9-Sisko/ Kira/ Odo/O'Brien/ Worf...Voyager-Kes/Janeway/Chakotay/Neelix-and especially tempted here , mostly,as am big STV fan....

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

My favorite is Spock.

I've only watched TOS, so as far as relatable characters, I guess I'd have to say McCoy. Aside from the fact that we are both from the deep South, I tend to think with my heart. My husband is a lot like Spock in personality (to the point that I have to remind the man to smile to put people at ease), so as you can imagine, we have our share of bickering. :)

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

Favorite--Spock or Sisko. Probably Sisko in a pinch.

Relatable--Barclay (anxiety and such) or Bashir (dork).

Identifiable--Riker (pseudo-douche that is nevertheless given great authority and respect) or Jadzia Dax (egotistic, inscrutable woman with somewhat bitchy tendencies).

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

Odo. (He has a cold, hard-boiled exterior, and a warm, sensitive soul underneath. That's me. And I share his passion for justice and order.)

Picard. (Much of the same reasons as Odo--and I love literature, too. And...I often find myself making profound philisophical soloqoys around others, like he does. :))

Janice Rand. (I wouldn't know if I "relate" or "identify" with her or not--after all, she was only around for a few eps. Still, there was something about that Yeoman that drew me to her.... She's one of my favorites. No doubt about that.)

Ezri Dax. (So many of the struggles she goes through make this girl so relatable...and identifiable. It is so very rewarding to see her triumph.

Also, she's one of my BIG favorites--for a long list of reasons, but basically because she's, as Quark said, "young, and beautiful, and full of life." Or, as Bashir said, "She [is] this...old soul...and yet so young at heart." The wisdom within her, coupled with her innocence and enthusiasm for life...well, you get the idea.)

Re: The most relatable, identifiable, and favorite characters through

Spock or Odo, I guess...

...at high school I was nick-named "Spock" by friends and non-friends alike. Not sure if it was a good thing - it had something to do with my fringe and eyebrows, apparently (I hope it wasn't my personality!). (Sigh) I wish I could grow a fringe nowadays...
