I was just thinking about this topic this evening. What music cue from Star Trek do you think is the most iconic, in the sense that it is most well-known among the general public? I'm not asking what you think is the best, just what you think has the most recognition.

To me, it has to come down to a choice between the TOS fanfare, the TOS theme, or the TMP/TNG theme. Certainly there are many other great pieces of Trek music, but I can't think of any that have the recognition that those three have.

What do you think?

The TOS fanfare added tremendously to the kickoff for every movie, starting with TWOK. Placing it there was a stroke of brilliance, almost like the gun barrel with James Bond theme before the Bond cold-opens. It basically tells you whose universe you're in.

I voted Goldsmith, but really I think it's evenly split.

EDIT: I forgot about the "Amok Time" fight music. Toss that one in for the split.

Jerry Goldsmith is IMHO the greatest musician who ever lived and his work on Star Trek is genius, being the greatest science fiction movie score of all time.

But when I think of Star Trek? As a whole? The Alexander Courage fanfare is the first thing that comes to mind. It's iconic in a way that cannot be overstated and is completely symbolic and all encapsulating of everything that makes Star Trek what it is.

The soundtrack for First Contact.
How the TNG theme was used in the moment when we see the E-E for the first time..... Chef's kiss.

I watch with subtitles. There are so many great moments in voyager simply captioned "*Majestic theme swells*" which gets me every time.

Which is ironic, given one of the (ridiculous) Berman directives on the music was that they were not allowed to reference the show's theme in the individual episode scores at all...

That first one is called "Dressing Down," originally from The Man Trap. Where is the other one heard?
I'm guessing CHARLIE X, though it may have resurfaced in over half the episodes, including SPOCK'S BRAIN. My favorite music cue is ''Da-da-da-da-da-da-da!'' from BY ANY OTHER NAME.:borg:

Is the TOS fanfare what plays when the Enterprise appears on screen?

If I get distracted after putting on an episode, hearing this piece of music is what makes me look back to see the Enterprise.

The TOS fanfare is part of both the TOS and TNG themes, so whatever people pick, it wins.

Though the correct answer is... the fight music from Amok Time :p

Haha. The good old fight music. They got a lot of use out of that one. I always wanted to get into a fight and hum it. Sadly it shall never happen. 😂
