Game The Most Disliked Winrich Kolbe Directed Episode

DS9 Season 1: "Past Prologue"
I just started watching DS9 for the first time 2 days ago and just saw this episode this morning . I quite liked it! There was a nice mixture of action, tension, and drama... Kira was put in a really difficult spot there, and Garak seems like an interesting addition... I look forward to him reappearing in later eps.

My next save is "SILENT ENEMY".

It was a nice early stab at developing Reed's character, which we figure out more about him through others than Reed himself due to his really private nature.

And the villain was good, too. Total mystery... we needed more like that.

(And with this save, I have done each series he directed.)

Very hard to make a bet which episode will actually win or loose this game btw? Thanks to @Sakonna for providing the elimantion games :techman:

You're welcome! :bolian: I never even try to predict the winner/loser anymore... it usually surprises me, which I'm happy about. :bolian:

I save episode "TNG Season 7: "Thine Own Self". I found ist perfect, moved me deeply (i swaer :) the first time i saw this one. Right now I like to think of this episode a the perfect Data Story, or a story which shows, how perfect (in terms of the right actions, the right things to do) and admirable Data is.
"Thine Own Self" is a truly underrated episode precisely because it shows how much of a hero Data is, even with no memory of who he is. The core of his being IS heroic.

(And the B story of Troi getting her 3rd full pip was pretty good, too.)
I would have saved "Thine Own Self" early, too. But not because of Data who I find to be unbelievable at best, and downright irritating and dangerous at worst (although, I hadn't considered that this episode shows his admirable and heroic sides - which it certainly does - as you both point out). No, I was going to save it for Commander Troi! Having a temper trantrum in front of Riker, ordering Geordi to his death, telling Data he has to call her "Sir"... Bloody brilliant!
I ALSO almost saved "Thine Own Self" right away. I would have definitely started with some commentary about how it's a stealth great episode, it's a fantastic episode no one ever mentions, it's under-rated, etc.

Guess not! Glad there's more appreciation for "Thine Own Self" than I thought. It's a sort of workmanlike outing in that the story isn't obviously "special" in any way, it's a very standard planet-of-the-week setup, but it's executed so well that it's elevated to Great Ep status.

TNG's strength was always it's wonderful cast chemistry, and the Troi B plot is such a great late-series showcase of that, the character relationships are so vividly lived-in.

I also love how you don't notice there's no Picard, until he suddenly appears for that one line at the end.

Compiling this list, I thought it was interesting that he directed both the premiere and finale of season 4 of Voyager. They're perfect season bookends. I already saved "Scorpion, Part II", and will now save "Hope And Fear."

Both are great episodes but H&F brought in a great twist, involving Janeway directly.

I loved the Berman-era finale cliffhangers so much, pretty much anytime there wasn't one I was BUMMED. It was always such a let-down. "Hope And Fear" is one of the few standalone finales to really satisfy me.

Yeah, a franchise that really had some marvelous cliffhangers, this one being a bookend and closure definitely felt satisfying, which is what matters in the end. And it's nice to have a breather between seasons too! :D

Janeway/Seven was such a dynamic character pairing, and this might be their best outing. Arturis was a great villain, mostly because he WAS TOTALLY RIGHT AND JANEWAY WAS THE ACTUAL VILLAIN. Since Species 8472 turned out to be such nice and reasonable good guys, Janeway really should not have intervened in the Borg's losing war against them!

^^this (those) :techman:

8472 did declare the desire of annihilation of all life in our galaxy (from recollection) but unlike the Borg they could probably be reasoned with a lot easier.

Seven/Janeway always saved the episode, no matter how good or bad the episode itself was. I never knew the actors had a beef against one another as it never showed on screen, and the story content of Janeway teaching Seven about humanity only made Janeway look that much better.

Arturis definitely was right - which makes a great twist, and there's no easier (or better) way than to tie him into the Borg.

My favorite exchange from this is always Seven's stab at humor, when they're about to be sent back to the Borg:

JANEWAY: In case I never get a chance to say this, I realize that I've been hard on you at times. But it was never out of anger, or regret that I brought you on board. I'm your Captain. That means I can't always be your friend. Understand?
SEVEN: No. However, if we are assimilated our thoughts will become one, and I'm sure I will understand perfectly.

:D

I was all set to save "Past Prologue" next, for Kolbe actually allowing Robinson to play Garak so gay in that first scene with Bashir, which I GREATLY appreciate. :bolian:

Instead I will do "Armageddon Game." I really like the way they did the aliens with hair in this one, that was a nice variation from the usual Forehead-Of-The-Week. Bashir & O'Brien had been featured as a pairing before this, but I think this is the first time their pairing is done really well, in a way that shows how much they had to offer the series when played as a duo.

And that slide whistle ending is PERFECTLY done.

"Remember" is one episode I've been consistently saving, and I'm not about to stop now! It was a strong episode that was about something, and Roxann Dawson did a great job of playing both characters, and distinguishing between the two. The visuals were well done -- especially the costuming -- and not overly elaborate.

I am called to save my beloved "Basics" next. As in most Trek two-parters, Part I greatly exceeds Part II, so starting there.

This is my favorite Divinely Bad Voyager episode. It is a foremost honoree in the "Sub Rosa" Hall Of Fame. I have watched specifically the last act with all the stupid gonzo cliffhangers something like eleventy billion times. THUMBS UP. :bolian::bolian:

"Caretaker" was my all-time favorite Star Trek pilot episode, and did a great job of establishing the characters and the situation of the series. That Voyager failed to capitalize on much of what had been set up, is not the fault of the pilot.

Also, props to Kolbe because setting up a series from scratch can't be the easiest directing job in the world, especially when your lead actress drops out a couple of days in. (Au revoir, Mlle. Bujold!)

I have to say Winrich Kolbe is such a cool-sounding name! I wish I had a name that badass.

Gonna save DS9’s “Blood Oath” — a real event episode, and glorious to see three TOS villains back on screen after nearly 3 decades. The fact they have post-TMP makeup suggests that, but for the budget, the Klingons were always meant to look like that (and makes Enterprise’s retcon all the more silly and redundant). All three actors give sterling performances, and Terry Farrell holds her own. This was around the time the writers and actress really started to get a handle on Jadzia and she gradually became one of my favourite characters.

I'll go for Birthright, Part I next.

Part one has the great Data story and discovering his dream program for the first time, as well as the Bashir crossover.

Geordi! Leah! Misunderstandings! Pouring vinegar into baby's milk!! What's not to like!!!

TNG Season 4: "Galaxy's Child"

Yeah, there are a couple scenes that seem out of place, with Geordi's "Is that so!" being unintentionally supercreepy but Leah gets a moment to get all creepazoid in the Holodeck too, over the computer's created simulation and taking it way out of context*... the nitpick of Geordi, in "Booby Trap", asking for a simulation of the scientists then asking for a personality based on existing system files... with his accepting a mere 90.63% accuracy rate... and not knowing where that 9.37% differential would be lurking... is that, on top of everything else, apparently Leah's marital status was protected too. With marriage increasingly said to be outdated in the 20th and 21st centuries, something made the concept return. I mean, I would have married too - if I found that small group of people who were into polyfidelity, but that's not important right now. Even Leah's impromptu shoulder massage couldn't have had Geordi really thinking the human would be the same. He just wanted someone more human-like (unlike Data), oddly. But if he brought in his BFF Data, there'd be not as much of a story in "Booby Trap", never mind no stellar followup with Junior demanding skim instead of whole milk.

Both make up for it at the end, though a little more polish could have helped. The sequel story was on the right track, but wasn't quite perfect and I gotta give the actors credit for playing even the worst cringey scenes with sincerity. Anything less and the episode would be a total flop.

Going to "THE HOMECOMING" for my next save.

A great way to start DS9's second year, and the season he directed the most STAR TREK. (5 DS9 and 3 TNG, two of them being the finale. Next season, he does the VGR pilot and 4 more episodes plus a DS9.)

Saving another VOY ep... this one gave us both the Vaadwaur and the Turei and gave Janeway a good opportunity to use her negotiating skills (if memory serves). Seven again goes against protocol (fight the power!), but Janeway ultimately agreed with her action (or at least admitted that she'd have made the move), and Chakotay got to relay another of his ancient fables, per the title.
It also was one of the eps when we got to see Voyager land on a planet's surface. That happened infrequently enough that it sticks in my brain about this episode.

To keep the episode from sinking, roll with how easily they modify the Delta Flyer (and note how it became the butt of a few jokes in "Futurama":

VOY Season 5: "Thirty Days"

The flow of the story, using a "dear dad" letter, is pretty novel and it works.

Paris being the rebel-wanting-a-cause works rather well given his time with the Maquis (and wanting to fly a diamond slot formation, but that's another story and a character he could have been.)

The story involves what amounts, superficially, to "Waterworld... in Space!" except this one's actually pretty cool. There's a fair bit of detail behind the decisions characters make, and we get another glimpse of what the Maquis could have been in early-VOY instead of the Kazon Klingon knockoffs.

The Ozone hole analogy is handled better here than in TNG's "Force of Nature". (noting in 2020 the ozone issue is more than turned around... https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddar...s-the-smallest-on-record-since-its-discovery/ Since then a new one has formed, but due to the arctic polar vortex, and it'll shrink again. Still, get that SPF 6,000,000,000 sunblock... or one of those little wood crates and line it with tinfoil and direct it at the sun and cook up some of those yummy weenies... just don't read up in what makes up a hot dog - like intestines, meat byproducts, animal byproducts, antibiotics, mystery ingredients combined and called "natural flavor", actual intestinal tracts - don't be "sheepish" when eating these weenies... oh heck, enjoy the list in full here--> https://www.ranker.com/list/disgusting-hot-dog-ingredients/jacob-shelton . Also, down it with a glass of milk (read up on how much pus it contains) flavored with artificial vanilla extract. You know what castorium is, yes? :barf: How do people figure out what these flavors are like? Especially castoreum... )

You know what would have been even more interesting? If Harry got promoted. Actually, why couldn't everyone be promoted accordingly? They're all doing above and beyond regular duty...

Heck, we even get to see the Delaney sisters. It's a shame they didn't have chewing gum in the 24th century because you know they'd do commercials to sponsor the show with instead...

I liked the bond between Alexander and Lwaxana in "Cost of Living," and Majel Barrett made her speech about aging and loneliness poignant. And I cheered when Lwaxana decided -- as shown in her arrival at her wedding -- that she would rather be alone than compromise who she was.

Script-wise, it hasn't aged the best, but I do like "The Bonding." At the time, any attention to the plight of the Redshirts felt revolutionary. The appearances and disappearances of Ghost Mom are always fantastically directed.

Though, I will NEVER not find the writing insane in that sequence of:

PICARD: "Jeremy, on the starship Enterprise, no one is alone. No one."
