Game The Most Disliked Visit To Earths "Present"

Sakonna

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Hello all! n Next up in these themed elimination games: Visits to Earth's 'Present' -- I think I've found every instance when we had a scene properly set on "present-day" Earth on a Trek series or movie (instances where they're just in orbit of Earth, or Earth is seen only via viewscreen, are excluded. "All Good Things" intentionally left off, as that is "the future"). As always, thanks to @Farscape One for vetting the list!

THE RULES. The basic idea is your standard elimination game. Below is a list of movies and episodes from TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, ST, and PIC where we see "contemporary" Earth. Eliminate your FAVORITE or the one you deem the 'BEST.' Please provide an EXPLANATION for why you are eliminating your choice and be sure to copy and paste the list with your choice removed.

Finally, please leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

No tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode just because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to win.

Enjoy!:bolian::bolian::bolian:

I'll start by saving "Family", which bored me to death as a child and I just recently rediscovered, and now I LOVE it. All the plotlines charm & move me.

Makes me hate "Generations," though, for killing the main family in this episode. The way the ep ends with Rene gazing at the sky, dreaming of his future traveling the stars... it was so cruel to kill this kid! (Also, grown Rene could have been such a great cast addition to "Picard")

I've rarely cared for Star Trek to show up on Earth, but it's nice to see a list of all the times it's been used as a plot place...

TOS Feature: “Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan”

It had spent very little time on Earth, mostly a redo of the Spacedock scene from TMP, Kirk's quarters for obligatory plot setup as he's a deskbound Admiral now, and via the Academy simulation room as a springboard as well as fake-out due to the leak that Leonard Nimoy was going to be killed off. All the movie's good and real stuff happened in space or on another planet, and none of it got dragged back to Earth. Even Khan doesn't have the drive to go back to Earth. He just wants revenge on Kirk and will just do whatever later.

...and amusingly, TOS uniquely had no episode went to contemporary (23rd century) Earth...

"HOMEFRONT" is my first elimination. It set up a great story, and how the paranoia of the Changelings REALLY got to people. Great episode from a great two-parter in a great season of a great series.

Man, there is quite a lot that I love on here, it is hard to choose. I think I'll go with "The End Is The Beginning."
It's early yet, but I think Raffi Musiker may end up being one of my absolute favorite Star Trek characters, and this is the ep that really introduced who she is. And such a fun, clever use of Vasquez Rocks. Also, the Romulans attacking the Chateau and Laris & Zhaban fighting back is an exceptional action sequence. Really, I loved everything about this episode (and most "Picard" episodes)

There are a lot of really good outings here, but I think for my first save, I'll pick "Pathfinder," because the scenes on "contemporary" Earth were so crucial to the plot. And because hey, Barclay is awesome.

I'm rescuing TOS Feature: “Star Trek V: The Final Frontier”. This was the first and, for a long time, the only Star Trek I saw apart from novels, and thus has a special place in my heart. Also, despite its (very minor!) faults, it's an enjoyable romp that has heart, humor and high adventure.

I'll pick Terra Prime, since for me Trek means something about hope even at the most brutal moment, something about believing "humanity" to overcome one day every cruelties. (Well, maybe it is "the" reason, why I have my problems with new Treks: bang, bang, pow, pow, roaaarr, awww can every show and there are faaaaar most better shows which are doing them in perfection. For me, believing in bright future of humanity is the essence of Trek, giving it up of for better ratings(?) is not what I want from Trek as consumer.)

I'll save The Search for Spock; aside from being a very solid movie overall, it was the first time we had a good look at 23rd century life on Earth outside of quick scenes at Starfleet HQ or the Academy.

There are money good episodes/films here to choose from. I'm going to go with Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. I remember this being my favourite film growing up when I was first getting into Star Trek, and remember thinking it had such an important message about endangering our future for short-term things.

I maybe don't enjoy it as much these days but it is a lovely family film with no violence to speak of, and a lot of great humour throughout. I mean ,"A double dumbass on you!" is still the best comeback to any insult. :techman:

The probe that is trying to make contact with the whales was fascinating, and I like that it crippled Starfleet as nobody could answer it correctly. Spock's progression throughout the film is a joy as well.

"There be whales, here!"

Dang, "In Search of Spock" was already saved.

TOS Feature: “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”

is saved. "Why?", you're not asking? Because the ship is the crewmember in this episode and not because VGER wants to merge with it after a matinee and dinner. So much loving detail went into so many effects, which tangibly express their sheer size and scale. This is one of the few times the ship feels like a real object and not some plastic or CGI model. To the point that even the "Star Wars" franchise is influenced by it as "The Empire Strikes Back" has the rebels staring out of a medical bay's giant window at the end. Which didn't look as good, oddly...

The musical score is first rate and conveys a sense of epic grandness without being bombastic...

For a rated "G" movie - we see people die horribly during a transporter accident and Kirk bullwhipping the crew in obsession and almost destroying his entire ship in the process. That's arguably impressive.

Back to the effects, that wormhole scene was pretty engaging. It's a shame the movie was so uneven at times, but the slowness did help show not just the awesome size of Enterprise but a scale of the VGER cloud interior that's a sumptuous feast for the eyes (and is what the Doctor Who theme could have been)...

Oh, how could I forget: Also for a rated "G" movie we're also seeing silly pastel uniforms that remind us in a couple cases that "G" means something else. They could have just transferred the costume costs to finish the VGER ship effects and have 'em all be sans clothing instead because a couple of careful camera angles left extremely little to the imagination. Not that much imagination is needed...

Still so much good stuff left! There's literally FIFTEEN items on this list that I love dearly enough that they could all be my next save. Since I don't have a fifteen-sided coin handy, I think I will let recency bias carry me and save "Maps And Legends."
Man, was that flashback to the synths killing everyone on Mars terrifying -- and in retrospect it made all the MANY times Data fell under malign influence much more frightening. Picard's visit to Starfleet Headquarters was riveting. The visit from the Stargazer doctor was such a nice touch -- surrounding Picard with characters from era's of his life before and after the TNG days does a great job of making him feel "real", a man who had a complete existence beyond the 7 years (+4 movies) that we have seen of it.

"Undiscovered Country" accidentally deleted upthread, so re-adding it here.

Since nobody saved "PARADISE LOST" after I did part one, I will do it.

This second part did not disappoint. Admiral Leyton really went off the rails during his talk with Sisko at the end.

"It's not OVER!"

Yes, sir, it is. You had Starfleet officers killing other Starfleet officers in an attempted coup. The sad part is that he was right to get the security brought up a few notches, and had he done a few other behind the scenes things, he could very well have gotten what he wanted WITHOUT resorting to what we saw. But he disgraced himself and the uniform, and I really felt for Ben when he was talking to Odo about possibly betraying them. But Odo hit the nail right on the head when he came back with their actions betraying Sisko, not the other way around.

I loved this episode and the first part.

And best of all... "With a Starfleet officer on every corner, paradise has never been so well armed."

Up next,

TNG, Season 1: “Conspiracy”

The Federation is plagued by tasty pink prawns, reminding not to take size or bulk too seriously.

It also closes a mini-arc started in "Coming of Age", which hinted at something going on. Captain Scott being compromised by the critters was unexpected and she gets some great dialogue too, well-acted. Yes, Federation HQ is also a ghost town - but the infestation explains it. Now explain how someone can bend to the right to avoid being hit by a phaser beam.

Savar was pretty cool too.

The computer comprehending Data's talking to himself - ditto.

It's also nice to see a mining station, even if abandoned. Worldbuilding.

There's a moment of genuine sadness when we see The Horatio destroyed.

Walker seemed on even Keel despite Picard's protestations.

Note "Code 47". I believe this is the first time "47" is used as an in-joke (diminutive homage to "M*A*S*H"'s "4077") in TNG's run. What's sad is that the show didn't stick to using the homage only 47 times... or 07 times... But that aside, it's cool to see communiques that only a standing Captain are allowed to see, TNG could have done that once or twice more before having a diluted dramatic return, and it's easier to wiggle in the "for your eyes only" trope as opposed to the head-popping trope of ship separation, which could be done and still keep the drama and events flowing - but not every week, LOL.

Picard in jammies'n'bathrobe, woohoo! When's it Riker's turn? ("The Game", of course, but not until a few more times when Picard is shown free o' fabric, just like in "Devil's Due")...)

Then there's a great exchange in an episode loaded with them, and the food poisoning potential (and cholesterol!) that many forms of tasty shellfish have but I digress:

AARON: What do you know of conspiracies, Captain?
PICARD: Not nearly enough, I suppose.
AARON: That's the charming thing about them, isn't it? When a machination is real, no one knows about it. And when it's suspected, it's almost never real.
SAVAR: Except, of course, in paranoid delusions for those who believe.

The episode is rough around some edges andf is still somewhat generic as an infiltration story, right down to including mealworms for token gross-out effect cuz' they're like all aliensy 'n such, but despite it all the episode still manages to convey a lot - especially for a fledgling series that was only just starting to find its feet*. That's a feat.

* with a great array of characters, including the one who bowed out way too early despite having the most interesting backdrop to potentially work with

I'm eliminating Tears of the Prophets. It's only half a minute of Earth-bound story, but it is Sisko cleaning potatoes (or is it clams) in the alley. Awesome.

I'll save "The Undiscovered Country." First Trek movie I saw in theaters, and I think the first and only time I ever saw ANY movie at a drive-in, which really enhanced the magic of the whole thing. A drive-in in a kind of rough, rural area. I was enraptured by the whole vibe of the place and the movie. It's an incredibly vivid childhood memory -- and a great movie on it's own merits.

I'm picking Star Trek '09, it was a great reboot with a great cast. It revitalized the franchise and was the breath of fresh air that was desperately needed. As much as I love TNG and 90s Trek generally the franchise needed a kick in the butt.

My next save is The First Duty, which is a wonderful episode of TNG, and probably the best use of Wesley Crusher I ever did see.

There is a wonderful conflict of interest here between telling the truth and siding with your friends. Robert Duncan McNeil was so good here playing the roguish Locarno, they hired him for Voyager. It's just a shame that Paris was a reboot, and not the original character.

I like "Broken Bow" for many reasons. I wish I would live in times where we start to travel to the stars and I could be part of the project team. So, it is best moment to be present at "Earth Present" for me and it feels real.
