I was watching "Eye Of The Needle" the other day (following along with the new "Delta Flyers" podcast) and thinking how great Vaughn Armstrong was in that part. Then when I listened to the pod, Wang & McNeill go on for awhile in the same vein. When I looked up Armstrong's Memory Alpha page I was surprised to see just how often they used him... there's a few one-off or two-episode appearances in here that I had never quite connected as the same actor.

And so, here we are with that as the theme for the next game: "The Most Disliked Vaughn Armstrong Appearance"

I'm starting off, appropriately, with his first appearance, "Heart of Glory".

He made a fantastic Klingon here, and you could sympathize with him somewhat because he does feel betrayed by his people and feels like the last real Klingon left. A great episode, especially for season 1 TNG.

He clearly made a great impression on the producers because he ended up being cast in more STAR TREK roles than anyone. And we, the fans, loved him, too.

I'll save "Regeneration", for providing such an unexpectedly satisfying coda to the Borg at the end of the Berman era. The Borg were just in storytelling shambles at this point -- and then this episode, with the most unpromising of premises, somehow pulled out one more awesome Borg encounter. Impressive!

Saving "SURVIVAL INSTINCT".

This was the only writing credit for Ronald D. Moore on VGR, except for a story credit on "BARGE OF THE DEAD". This episode illustrates exactly why it was a damn shame he didn't stay longer.

Also, this was a mentally brutal episode for Seven and the former Borg. She really was personally responsible for bringing about a living hell for those three. And the ending where they die to be free... I get it, and I would likely choose the same thing for myself, but damn that was a gut punch.

Great performances by ALL, including, obviously, Vaughn. This episode had shades of "DEATH WISH" when I first watched, and it still does... and that's a compliment, because I love that episode.

This being right at the start of season 6 and others like "DRAGON'S TEETH" and "TINKER TENOR DOCTOR SPY", it really gave the impression this was going to be VGR's best season. Truly sad we didn't get more.

How dare you, @Sakonna!?! No appearance of Vaughn Armstrong can be disliked! (The same as with Jeffrey Combs)
However, I do admit that some of the episodes he's appeared in are less than stellar - particularly that one I saw last night in which he barely said anything, and was mistaken for someone else.
Oh. Wait. That was an ep of Modern Family...

Anyway, I'm going to save "Vox Sola" for the concept and the look. Especially VA portraying the first Kreetassan we see on screen. The make-up, hair, costumes, etiquette - all made for a fascinating new race. Plus, the weird, white, goopy, symbiotic lifeform was an unusual alien foe as it wasn't a "forehead of the week" or a non-corporeal space ghost/gas-cloud/energy-field etc.

anyhoo, I vote for "First Flight". It shows that Forrest can be a badass when he wants to. Remember the scene where he absolutely lays the smackdown on Archer and AG Robinson after their test flight?

Though often overshadowed by the flashier "Tacking Into The Wind", "Changing Face Of Evil", or "WYLB", "When It Rains..." is my 4th favorite segment of the final arc. This is one of the final arc eps that really delivers, every story in it is firing on all cylinders.

I'll save The Forge, the beginning of what is probably my favourite arc in season 4 of ENT. Seeing Forrest go down to save Soval was a very good death, and helped to push things in motion in the rest of the story.

I think "Fusion" is one of those everybody hates, isn't it? But I am not one of them. The Vulcan world-building on Enterprise is one of the few areas where I thought that series was actually quite successful.

^Y'know, I thought about saving that episode for the same reason, but I've been trying to limit my saves to episodes where I thought Armstrong specifically had an impact on the episode.

I find myself sliding around with the metric I use... like sometimes I'm saving based on episode as it relates to list themes, and other times I'm just feeling "oh I love that one!" Anyway, meanwhile, for my next save I'm going to relate it to list theme and save "Fury", an episode I pretty much hate -- except for those scenes with the Vidiian captain, which are great! I will load "Fury" on Netlfix just to FF to those scenes! (And also Old Kes telekinetically trashing the ship before transporting back in time, that's one of those stupid-but-fun sequences that satisfies). This episode doesn't do much well, but it does give us one last cool appearance from the Vidiians, and that I really appreciate.

It also took me FOREVER to realize that was him in that role.

What does it say if one of the parts of the episode you most enjoy features the ship getting wrecked?

Just kidding, I know it doesn't really say that much.

I was kind of expecting "Fury" to win actually.
