In an episode made for Robin Williams, who would have been a coup, we still got a halfway decent "Is he or isn't he a time traveler?" story that ups season 5's average considerably. Matt Frewer did the job very well as Williams, a Trek fan, was unable to do the role at the time.

I think "Ephraim & Dot" is DELIGHTFUL.

Truly my first reaction to it was to be a little depressed -- this poor momma tardigrade spent from the original series all the way thru to the third movie desperately chasing after her eggs?!? what a miserable two decades! -- until I realized Ephraim was experiencing this in real-time and just jumping around the timeline as she popped in and out of the mycellial network. Time travel turned it from downer to AWESOME.

And also everything else about it was great. Brilliant visual design, brilliant conceit to bring in all that Tom & Jerry-type energy. Definitely my favorite Short Trek

I cannot save any Temporal Cold War ones yet... I hated that arc with a passion.

So my next elimination is "Firstborn". While not a great episode, it did have some decent Worf as a father scenes, especially with adult Alexander when he reveals himself.

Man, people really hate the Temporal Cold War! And I am one of those people. But I do think "Broken Bow" is an excellent pilot. As @Brennyren said of "Caretaker" in another thread, the biggest problem with it is the failure of the series to satisfactorily follow up on what the pilot sets up.

The thought to eliminate Fury - which I hate with a passion- just to annoy a few people briefly entered my head. But my conscience forbids me to do so

I'll eliminate E2, which, in my view is a kind of "crew study" that shows how the Enterprise could develop, if they were left to their own devices for a 120 years, along with conflicts between younger selves and later insights, either from an older version of themselves (T' Pol) or their descendants. Even though the story is painted against the background of the Temporal War Arc it is mostly self contained, which to me made it a bit of a "breather" when I watched it. The reset button at the end of the episode is simply a necessary evil.

"Perpetual Infinity" gets my next vote. It gad some good character moments, and it is the last one that is not a Temporal Cold War episode or "FURY". (Even I did not like that episode, and I'm generally quite forgiving of scifi... STAR TREK in particular.)

You beat me to it. I think out of what is left here, The Expanse is the strongest. It was signal that two seasons of mediocrity may finally be over, and it almost played like a second pilot.

Not amazing, but better than what is left.

Shockwave II does a solid job of continuing the Temporal Cold War when it still made some sense, and keeping the Suliban as a menace bested by our heroes. Cold Front should get points for starting it, but it really peaked in Shockwave II.

Mmm, tough call. I think I'll go with "Cold Front." I do not like this episode, at all, and it brings us Daniels, one of Trek's most worthless recuring characters (I have fonder feelings towards some of TNG's two-episode filler ensigns at the helm) but there's still some intermittent sparks of life in it... I was still able to hope at this point that maybe the TCW would amount to something worthwhile. It took the terribleness of later installments to really shatter those hopes.

Zero Hour was a thrilling climax to the Xindi storyline, first showing what was at stake by giving a view to the signing of the United Federation of Planets charter, and after that it was all action.
Up to the appearance of space Nazis, of course.
