Game The Most Disliked Second Season Episode

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked. :bolian:

THE RULES: Below is a list of 2nd season episodes from every Trek show to have a 2nd season so far -- TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, ST, PIC, and LD.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

Well, the 3rd season list was an experiment in "does the game even work with a list this long?" And it did! So let's see if we can push it even further with this even longer list...

I was anticipating a lot of cut-and-paste errors with the season 3 game (generally speaking, the longer the list the higher the error rate), but somehow there really weren't many (or any?). Lets see if that streak continues, but if errors do crop up, that's fine, we'll just correct them as we go along. It's hard to avoid with this many items. :bolian:

I'll start at the very bottom with Lower Decks -- "First First Contact." One of the all time great Trek episodes, I've rewatched it about eleventy billion times in the last year. A perfect crescendo for the season.

Nothing outrageous about this one:

TNG: "Elementary, Dear Data"​

Yeah, a couple plot quibbles exist (like what story doesn't), but the setup is fairly brilliant and Daniel Davis steals the show (even if he's cognizant of "Mister Computer" even before Geordi opens his mouth to say "Computer, make an opponent capable of defeating Cmdr Data", which is when the *ding* moment arrives.) And unlike daft scenes discussing "Dayta versus Dat-aah", we get some proper depth aimed at folks over the age of four in terms of character development for Pulaski's arc - and it's actually properly done. (Just don't read into how Moriarty wants to fill people with his crumpets too far, now there's a bad joke that got under the radar...)

As usual, don't ask how holodeck matter can survive outside the holodeck (even holodeck 2!), but to be fair it's safe to say that the scene that would have explained it would have arguably worsened the story so, oddly enough, for once I won't whine.

This is quite a hard decision: I really enjoy season 2 of TNG - the show had worked out what it wanted to be and there was still quite a bit of weird sci-fi and it was before the point in the show when the Federation started to feel like a fairly small place. On rewatching season 2 of ENT last year for the first time since it was on, I realised a lot of it is actually quite good and it is way better than I had remembered.

My first save is "The Thaw". I love everything about this episode: the tone feels like a TOS episode, it really feels like they are inside a computer simulation, Fear loses (among other reasons) because he picks Harry because in the short term he can scare Harry a lot more when he should have picked B'Elanna because she's more likely to be able to defeat him once she's out of his control, Janeway's lines at the end of the episode, the brilliant use of the EMH, that because we mostly see only what Harry sees we don't know what the Janeway's solution is until it happens.

There's nothing outrageous about this one:

The episode starts out with a scene that has nothing to do with the episode, but sets the stage for other set-pieces later on... then we get to the scene where they find the big void, of which Data goes out of his way to say that no Starfleet vessel has come across anything even remotely like it before. Mr Spock would disagree, but that's not important right now.

In this episode, Dr Pulaski starts out openly refusing to treat Data as a living being - right down to some iffy dialogue that admittedly feels contrived:

PULASKI: Forgive me, Mister Data. I'm not accustomed to working with non-living devices that-- Forgive me again. Your service record says that you are alive. I must accept that.

Note that this is long before "The Measure of a Man" and we should be so lucky; if the good doctor knew of that big on/off switch that Tasha found by process of feeling things out in a darkened room, then Pulaski's point about Data being a device would become incontrovertible. But that's not important right now. Indeed, in the same scene she's legitimately awed:

DATA: Could a lack of dimension be another dimension in itself?
PULASKI: That's an interesting question.

Of course, that's also like asking "Does having no spouse make you the happiest person alive?" It depends... and by age 80, you'll probably need to stock up on a few boxes of those, and I recommend the washable ones since the disposable ones don't decompose in landfills for hundreds of years, but that's not important right now... relatively speaking...

There is suspense in truckfulls in this episode, as the crew transport into the visage of their sister ship. The part where space folds in on itself, like an Escher painting or part three of the Doctor Who episode "Castrovalva", ups the ante.

Then they met Nagilum.

Apparently, Nagilum is a partial anagram of Mulligan, a la Richard Mulligan - the actor most famous for naughty sitcom "Soap" and the less-naughty sitcom "Empty Nest" - for the villain of the piece. That's a fascinating choice, and having seen other shows where sitcom actors get chances to shine in another genre, it can be quite great. Sadly, he was unavailable so they got Earl Boen - another inspired choice because he rocks it as this nightmarish being - who's given rather a lot of thought in an episode that's more amazing than it ought to be (but is still pretty solid either which way!!)

Mesmerizing, terrific stuff... Indeed, we are all part of the universe, for sure, but that's easily one of the best Picard speeches...

The incidental music is first rate, especially with the self-destruct bit at the end. (And Riker's melodrama works to the scene's advantage, I must say...)

Okay, this episode has one big flaw - in case it hadn't been noticed, which is unlikely: Wesley is in a scene, they do some cutaways, and in the next scene he's nowhere on the bridge - replaced by Ensign Haskell, first name "Eddie". He is the first to be killed off in one of Nagilum's quaint little experiments. No worries, Wesley pops back in for the very next scene. As we all know, since they didn't make Depends in his size, Wesley ran off to the nearest loo - which is in the captain's ready room, because that's where the best captain's logs are made... go figure. But crass joking aside, we all know that Wes pops out because he's too young to learn about the birds and the bees, for when Nagilum gets all pervo and wonders why Pulaski's got more bumpy bits in her construction compared the others... still, one can't have everything perfect in a script...

Oh wow....THIS is going to be tough. Especially since TOS, DSC, DS9 and LD all have really good second seasons...and even TNG had some absolute gems despite having an otherwise relatively inconsistent S2

Saving TOS "The Doomsday Machine." It's probably a top-5 episode in the entire franchise, and it has everything you want in a quintessential Trek episode. Just a fantastic hour of television in almost every dimension.

There are some stone-cold classics here. Fresh off a TOS rewatch, I'm going for Journey to Babel, as I forgot how much it set up Spock's family and the races in the Federation.

One of my favourite scenes in the entire series is McCoy looking smugly as he has both Kirk and Spock under his medical care following the events in the episode and manages to get the last word in. :)

I'm also pretty sure it inspired the rather original, 1991 sitcom "Herman's Head" as well, though there's a show of which three seasons existed and only the first one was truly good...
