THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked. :bolian:

THE RULES: Below is a list of romance-of-the-week TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, ST, and LD episodes.
(And below that is a post outlining the parameters for this list in more depth -- it was one of the trickiest ones to pull together!)

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

A NOTE ON LIST PARAMETERS:

As with most of these other themes, ROTW has expressed itself in a wide variety of ways over the life of the franchise. Compiling the list, I started to feel like I was sitting in a jury box on "Star Trek: SVU" -- Trek has mixed romance and mind-control/alien possession A LOT, and closed many of those eps with the suggestion that maybe it wasn't really the external influence causing their behavior, maybe they SECRETLY had these feelings -- so figuring out which of those episodes belonged and which should be excluded was tricky.

I ultimately settled on excluding anything where one half of the "romance" is an alien trying to seduce the other character so they can use them as food ("Sub Rosa", "Man Of The People", "The Muse", "Favorite Son"), because those never felt consenting. But if our character seemed left in a wistful place of "we might have been amazing together, if you weren't an evil alien queen!", those would stay.

The list also (somewhat controversially :bolian:) includes romances where the audience experiences the full story of the romance within a single episode, even if the in-universe time it lasts is greater ("11:59", "Homestead"). The list also includes episodes where sci-fi-ish means causes a character to live a long-term relationship in a very compressed time frame ("Emissary", "The Inner Light").

Romances we see only twice are included as a single item -- a romance of two weeks seemed close enough to a romance of one week to warrant inclusion (TNG: "The Emissary"/"Reunion", TNG: "Captain's Holiday"/"Qpid", etc).

However, episodes about long-running pairings they played with multiple times were also left off ("His Way", "Blood Fever", "Data's Day", "Ferengi Love Songs", etc).

The few two-parters with ROTW elements were also listed as single items.

Romances between one-off guest characters were excluded, but recurring characters that got ROTW's made it on.

ENT: "Precious Cargo" is an easy first save for me. I love this episode! It's somewhat ridiculous, but so much fun and full of joy. Odd couple Trip and Kaitaama are obvious and predictable, but sometimes - like this is, for me - that can be comforting and light. Love can be too much at times, but a temporary bout of lust/infatuation might be just right. :adore:

Romance of the Week is one of those concepts that can be excellent, or can be truly terrible.

The way that the female Romulan Commander truly takes to Spock was so very interesting. It helps that The Enterprise Incident is an excellent episode anyway. I point to this episode as an example that Section 31 is something that definitely could have existed back in TOS, with Kirk and Spock's secret mission.

It's a shame there weren't any more Romulan episodes during TOS's run.

"Rejoined" has long been a favorite of mine. Truly, one of the most pathetic failures of Berman Trek is not taking a strong stance on LGBTQ issues, but at least there is this brilliant episode, which I think is pretty damn perfect.

Oh my, so many of these are deliciously heckle-worthy despite equally having lots of great moments peppered into question plots, like the garden patch placed just behind Fukushima's nuclear plant. The fact I save them and put in so much nauseating detail only reflects how much I actually enjoy and appreciate these episodes. And there's a lot I'd love to save at once. Nice list! :techman:

Also, would "Who Mourns for Adonis?" qualify as Lt Palamas has a romance of the week with Apollo?

Am also impressed that TOS is limited to less than 79 episodes, noting Kirk is alleged to get it on every week...

So,

TOS, Season 2: "The Gamesters Of Triskelion"​

If my first to rescue - there's a lot going for this one, so let's adumbrate it:
  • It's the first where McCoy gets around the censors by saying "Are you out of your fu Vulcan mind?!" and, damn, it's hilarious and for the right reasons.
  • There are some first rate Spock/McCoy banter scenes in this one, some of the series' best as well. Writer Margaret Armen knew how to get every ounce out of their double-act
  • There's a chilling commercial break cliffhanger you'd not expect from 1960s television implying of all things sexual assault - it comes across as effective horror, rather than poorly done to be heckle-worthy, and helps up the gravity of the situation that the kidnapped crew are forced to deal with...
  • The 3-way (*snicker*) fight at the end breaks its own rules where they can't breach their color zone, but it's actually so exciting that it doesn't matter. Chant it with me now as if you're in that Meatballs movie: "It just doesn't matter!" except you're actually enthused!
  • The actor who plays Galt had the idea to look like he was gliding across the floor rather than walking. Kudos.
  • Kirk wins his bet with the Providers and does nothing to ensure they keep their end of the word. He's placing a lot of trust based on the Providers removing the doggie collars from their necks. But this is Kirk. He just innately knows when to take them at their word and when to bring back the Federation every year to follow up (right, Oxmyx?)
  • Tamroon's pretty cool too.
  • The subtext and outright use of "slavery" to define it with is noteworthy - especially when Kirk socks it to the Providers in a speech at the end. There are a number of themes of interest in this story being told.
  • Lars has some awesome legs. I'd bet fifty Quatloos that other parts are just as impressive :drool:
  • Last but not least: Oh my gawd, it's not Kirk/Spock/McCoy being the trio taken.


Yeah, let's face it: The episode is also poor in a number of ways:
  • There's so much going on in this episode, odd but true, and not as much gets as developed as it could/should have been
  • "Triskelion" has no relation to "Triskele", other than the Colosseum playfield for which nobody can jump into an opposing color despite everyone doing so, which would have been interesting to weave into the story... even more so if they had any of the players being confined to the red zone instead of the three confined to the green with Kirk confined to yellow...
  • Due to budgetary constraints I'd guess, the Roman Colosseum fight scenes lacked fellow Thralls to watch the proceedings, though the way the episode is filmed it doesn't stand out as a big issue
  • In a less successful attempted-horror commercial break cliffhanger, Galt activates the doggy collars of RGB goodness and the camera - aimed squarely on Kirk - allows the audience a full frontal of some of the by-far-worst-and-most-heckle-worthy "pain acting" by the numero uno star while everyone behind him is actually trying to look genuinely in pain. Indeed, Koenig and Nichols already sell it extremely well, but if they saw Shatner's face in that one moment they would have gone the extra inch and both deserve Emmy awards for outstanding acting
  • Kirk wins his bet with the Providers and does nothing to ensure they keep their end of the word. He's placing a lot of trust based on the Providers removing the doggie collars from their necks. But this is Kirk. He just innately knows when to take them at their word and when to bring back the Federation every year to follow up (right, Oxmyx?)
  • Ditto for the protracted lust interest between Kirk and the Jiffypop brand of popcorn on legs (Shahna). It's not really love when he opts to leg it back to the ship at the first opportunity too and contrives reasons as to why she must stay back... (it leaves a bad taste in one's mouth.)
  • ...Why doesn't Kirk offer Shahna asylum? Or others? He does to people in other stories. (Because he states she has to learn from the providers but also hints that she would be a good leader. The exposition throughout the story is thin on so many levels...)
  • The Providers look like a metaphor for traffic light - conveniently red, gold, and green. Maybe they also inspired Boy George's hit song...
  • The Providers also look like practical joke plastic dog poop placed on silver pedestals
  • The episode may only be for 49 minutes, but a few more minutes devoted to character expansion may have made the episode feel less spartan. Just replacing puke green sky with vistas of thralls workin' in the coal mine doesn't alone convey a sense of scale, robust dialogue and crafting and usage of scenes can sell expansiveness too
  • Who is Galt? Is his first (and uncredited) name "John"?! He's not a John, more like a Space Pimp. There's your heavyhanded message o'the week. Hmmm, let's roll this off the tongue: "Doctor Who is John Galt". Naah... maybe they can use that as a "before and after" puzzle in "Wheel of Fortune" and then go *snarf* over how cool that post-post-postmodern fluff is.

Imagine this one being held back a couple weeks with DC Fontana script editing it to polish off the rough spots and add just a tinge more detail... there's a lot of potential in the script, some successful, some not, but a mild rewrite would have made it one of the all-time greats instead of a curate's egg laid by Shrodinger's Cheshire calico cat.

I loved VOY: "Counterpoint" when I first saw it and a rewatch or two didn't detract anything. Kate Mulgrew and Mark Harelik absolutely sold Janeway's and Kashyk's mutual attraction, and all the double-crossing made for a gripping and exciting episode.

I just remembered one line of dialogue from one episode but will get to that later. Along with numerous other episodes that are great in one form or another or many... But for now,

TNG, Season 2: “The Dauphin”​

In amongst a slew of 80s raunchy comedy teen movies* was this little television show that took "coming of age" a lot more seriously. There's a terrific mix of "Enterprise as taxi service" combined with "Wesley's hormones" that, thanks to prevailing circumstances and good acting, makes this more than the sum of its parts.

It starts out with Wesley drooling over Salia, who points out to be careful with the mechanical part or else it'll rip the iron out of his blood** and it gets better from there, despite him not getting all Maxwell Smart and flicking the "on" switch, given his other "on switch" was already set to maximum***... and it only gets beter...

Wesley is really well-handled starting in season 2, thanks in part to Mommy Crusher going off to lead Starfleet Medical and now new plot avenues need to be made... also due to scriptwriters and makers having a greater sense of how to deal with a child prodigy that can be written with intellect without maiming the other characters and while introducing character flaws... and also due to Wil Wheaton being rather great at times. If one never warmed up to Wesley before or since, that's never going to change and that's okay.

The idea of destined ruler who can't oink with someone due to diplomatic ramifications makes for the sort of tension that, for me, I find better than just two people having a picnic. This then leads to Anya.

Anya is a decent enough villain with her overzealous nature (leading to many wonderful moments that clearly get on the crew's nerves - especially Pulaski, which also reminds of how multifaceted her character is and why plopping her into "Ethics" in season 5 would not have easily worked (or at all)), and, indeed, has a nice little antagonistic double-act with Worf, which has even some moments of charm. The acting is spot-on as great as the build-up and surprise moments throughout.

Season 2 really shows the universe as a dangerous place and isn't afraid to experiment with ideas or species, and this episode is on full display and with some brisk direction. It's also one of a few times where 80s Trek made an incorporeal being tangible and even fascinating again, given TOS wore out the trope too quickly. (Plus, I'm sure this episode's morphing had a mild influence for ST6 TUC, coming one day to a 4K player near you?)

I almost wish I were a teenager again as this is a decent way to guide blooming kids how to deal with possible love interests. Not that everyone hits puberty at the same time or should feel like they have to be told how to be defined (to thine own self be true?), but as far as aftersk00l specials go, this one doesn't feel like one. Unlike "Symbiosis", another story I'll happily defend...


* of which some were oddly amusing

** and hopefully influenced X2 as to how Magneto got out of his individually wrapped plastic cell. If that movie wasn't gouda it'd be cheezy...

*** and it's no surprise some were hoping he had had switched on the machinery by accident instead... eww...
