I have adored "Muse" from the time it first aired. A story about storytelling, expertly mimicking the real-life conventions of ancient Greek drama as it shows an author struggling against the constraints of his art (his sponsor, his audience, his temperamental actors) as he tries to make a difference with his work. I've studied English, and performed and crewed in theater, and written stories, and this whole episode really resonated with me. Special points for how B'Elanna "gets it," and goes back to give Kellis's play an unforgettable ending.

[Qonundrum]

Despite being surprisingly early in TOS's run,

TOS, Season 1: "The Naked Time"

manages to bring to the surface and amplify some of the inner-/repressed mindsets of the crew. To shockingly good effect as it's not the idle drunken party one might expect but they're actually taking the time to dig into these characters and in a way that fits. Not too shabby considering how early into the show's run this one was written...

Some examples of characters gone cuckoo:

• Riley thinks he's the go-to by all the ladies and he makes sure to remind everyone incessantly his ancestry (he's Irish, BTW)
  
• Chapel is all saccharine-goo-goo for Spock
• Spock hates emotions because he could never tell his mother he loved her and that he's ashamed of his friendship with Jim
  
• Some random guy who likes to paint scribbles some phrases - first one about loving your fellow humans, followed up by implied death threat on bulkhead walls (and how the 1966 censors allowed the latter...)
• Sulu the fencer with the awesome chest (fine by me, I got into fencing back in the day too...)
• idiot who mindlessly takes off the protection suit (which was created from a $3 shower curtail, woohoo!) gets all emo and then uses a dull butter knife to cause superficial injuries ( per McCoy's own admission)
• Kirk realizes why ships are called "she" and promptly puts the sail on his big mast... eww...

Well, not quite with that last one, as it's rather closer to something like this:

KIRK: I've got it, the disease. Love. You're better off without it, and I'm better off without mine. This vessel, I give, she takes. She won't permit me my life. I've got to live hers.
...
KIRK: Now I know why it's called she.

An episode that easily could have faltered far worse than just forcing the issue of getting the disease on board because Spock's assistant Tormolen had to be a dip for the sake of the story to even begin, quickly recovered and became surprisingly strong as a result - the acting clinches the deal as well.

cleverly uses the Spock/McCoy relationship for one of their better arguments, as well as Spock lecturing McCoy on humanity's history. (No worries, a certain TNG episode had Riker aping the same quip as well, in "The Bonding" and with some comparative narrative heavyhandedness, but that's only due to translation to English from "Ye Oldeth Shakespearean"... or because the TNG episode involved warring species versus TOS's space herpes mindlessly wandering the galaxy just waiting for a plot to happen.)

In some aspects, no other decade than the 1960s could get away with such high-concept abstract. of, somewhere distant in outer space, a single-cell organism is about to split into two, then four, then eight, ain't that great... Given how much time it took to get to this stage of development, the galaxy - if not universe - still has a few zillion years to go before the incidental music suggesting urgency over impending doom has any actual gravitas to it.

...Oh, the obvious pun involving "high" was not intended... for once...

The episode's special effects redefine "impressive", as well as being somewhat influenced by the "acid rock" genre that was popular at the time. While TOS-R redid the effects to try to simulate fluidic goo the Enterprise was traveling through and did so reasonably well, nothing beats the originals - a rare feat as TOS-R actually put a lot of thought into the scenes being improved -- but that's another story.

I'm going to save the epic conclusion of Discovery's Mirror Universe adventure: "What's Past Is Prologue". The original DS9 episode Past Prologue is good too, but What's Past is Prologue just hits the accelerator, ignoring every sign along the way warning that it's on the road to madness. The stakes are somehow even higher than the main plot as they have to destroy the flagship of an evil universe in order to save all life in the multiverse and power up their mushroom drive with the explosion. Discovery's evil former captain gets stabbed in the back by Burnham's evil mother/galactic emperor and dropped down a hatch into a star, that's the level it's operating on. It had my jaw on the floor wondering if I should love it or hate it and I quickly settled on loving it.

TOS, Season 1: "The Man Trap"

may be an early example of TOS finding itself (Kirk is a radically different character), but it's quick to show (or to try to) how the "monster of the week" is not just evil but is deserving of sympathy in its own right.

In typical TOS fashion, one bizarre contrivance (of the sort that would otherwise never actually happen) is forced to make the story happen: In this week's episode, it's Kirk having a stick up his butt on protocols* instead of just giving over the salt tablets as requested so that the Crater fam there can make their Julienne potatoes and get on with their lives. Sorry for the use of "fam", some of this diminutive monosyllabic slang is still new to me...

* so much so that even Sheldon Cooper would wince​

On the plus side, the monster critter is using its amazing abilities to blend in -- nope, not change to blend in like a chameleon sitting on a tree leaf or trunk out of abject boredom but to change its entire appearance - complete with clothing - to look like whatever its target lunch said fritter thinking about. There's an obvious dirty joke to this subplot and it's impressive that, of all the TOS stories that TNG onward didn't play with, that "The Man Trap" isn't one of them because the title alone leads to dirty thoughts too... Anecdote aside, the form the monster takes when meeting various crewmembers is actually rather impressive and it's easy to buy into the scenario on how it's luring its lunch to its death.

But with such great power, which arguably isn't being used with responsibility, just how did the "salt vampire" species end up extinct? Granted, the planet looks like a desert - as far as studio stage sets circa '66 (by the seashore) would allow...

Going back to Kirk's season-1 persona, being very hard-edged and all, his all-but-extolling his belief about how Prof. Crater's pet vampire fritter would even turn on him if it had to was proven to be correct as the poor professor was killed out of desperation by the being he called his "pet". Now let's dig into this and I promise not to make this any more disturbing than some of the material in the actual episode itself: Generally, pets usually whine and whine and wait for the owner to die and only then do they eat the corpse if they've been starving long enough after Billy had a fatal heart attack... but they never actually kill their owner. At least for cats and dogs -- usually... have you ever seen "The Day The Pets Got Even, part two" from that old sketch comedy show "The Edge" that aired on October 10, 1992? It's the 4th episode... Oh well... Either way, owners of boa constrictors, lions, tigers, bears, large parrots they don't keep in a cage while gone (or the ones who know how to unlock it, which some can do), rabid raccoons, and other exotic things may not be so lucky if their beloved pet, conscious of their benefactor or not, is jonesin' for some salt for their french fries and just can't wait any longer (like how the toddler and/or senior citizen can't wait anymore to get to the bathroom... eww...)
