Game The Most Disliked Prime Directive Episode

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, LD, PRO, & SNW episodes, plus movies, that tell Prime Directive stories.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to love about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad" if there's nothing left you truly love.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

The Prime Directive is so infused into Star Trek at large, this is one of the lists where it's particularly tricky to draw the line between what makes it and what doesn't. Hopefully the result feels right to people.

I'll kick it off -- I have been so high on "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption" recently.

I have a tendency to be really fucking annoyed by those "let's follow a side character for their own showcase" episodes generally, and then something like this comes along just hits a total home run with that device. Peanut Hamper! Such a brilliant vocal performance in that role. I laugh so hard at that "Oh, so I haven't been violating the Prime Directive this whole time..." line.

I'm not entirely sure I'd view it as a "Prime Directive" episode...but I'm happy it's here because it's one of my favorites. I'm taking TOS Season 1: "Errand Of Mercy" off the list. The intro to the Klingons, John Colicos chewing scenery with Shatner, great cloak-and-dagger stuff, and a twist ending worthy of Twilight Zone. What's not to like? I give it a 7,824.7 to 1 chance of being the best episode on this list.

Lots of great episodes here. Emissary is still my favourite Berman-era pilot. The first contact between the Prophets and Sisko is so well done. Having it set during one of Sisko's most traumatic periods, and the Prophets not understanding linear time because Sisko wasn't letting go of his past still grabs me.

I'm saving TOS Season 1: "The Return Of The Archons." It was always one of my childhood favorites, despite some flaws and limitations (the episode kind of plays out like the entire civilization is just there in that little town...but hey whatever). I love Festival, and there are some funny moments (McCoy freaking out "YOU'RE NOT OF THE BODY", Kirk telling the Lawgivers to find new jobs, etc) amid a pretty entertaining plot. It's also always a pleasure to see Kirk talk a computer to death.

A lot of great episodes on this list.

I'll remove TNG Season 4: "First Contact" because it's actually very much about the prime directive, and not in a 'we have revealed ourselves to this primitive civilization and now we must explain we aren't gods!' kind-of-way such as in Who Watches the Watchers (which I also love by the way), but showing how differently people at 'our' level of development or even slightly higher (as far as I know we aren't at the cusp of developing warp) could be reacting to aliens. The episode also reflects on the question how far they are allowed to go to rescue their team members and where they have to respect the autonomy of the locals, even if that means letting Riker die.

It still wouldn't have worked for them due to the special quartz mantle property of Sikaris and incompatibility with Federation technology, but Janeway, Torres and Tuvok are assimilated in Unimatrix Zero so now the Borg would know. With their knowledge base of thousands of species they might find a way around these limitations, and Borg being able to land directly on planets all over the quadrant, bypassing defending fleets altogether is a scary thought.
