Game The Most Disliked One-Off Director Episode/Movie

THE OBJECTIVE: A sudden-death elimination game in which we remove our personal favorite episodes/movies from a themed list, until we arrive at the episode that is, if not the worst, at least the most disliked.

THE RULES: Below is a list of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DIS, & ST episodes, plus some movies, from a director who only has a single directing credit within the Trek franchise. We've done so many lists collecting the work of the most prolific directors, I wanted a way to play the other end of the spectrum.

Eliminate/save your favorite, or the one you deem the ‘best.’
Post something you love about the episode you are saving, and copy-and-paste the list with your choice removed.

You can use any standard you like to judge which option is "best." You can save episodes for being widely recognized “best Trek” classics, or for idiosyncratic qualities that no one appreciates but you.

As you get down the list, you might have to reach more and more for something to love about an episode, and it's OK to eventually save episodes for being "less bad" if there's nothing left you truly love.

But -- no tactical voting! You cannot remove an episode because you don’t think anyone else will, or because you feel it would threaten your preferred episode's chance to “win.”

You can take multiple turns. Leave at least 2 eliminations by other posters before you eliminate another episode.

New players are always welcome, you do not have to already be a "most disliked game" regular to dive in.

Eliminating Living Witness.

Great fun to see Evil Voyager, and an episode in which our EMH can truly shine.
Also makes one think about the difference between actual historical events and their later interpretation.

Made me ponder the question whether there could possibly be circumstances where it would be better to not set the record straight (as the EMH seems inclined to think at a certain point when he realises his testimony could have explosive results for the stability of contemporary Kyrian and Vascan society), or if even under such circumstances, veracity is always preferable, regardless of the results (eventually you'll have to learn to live with the truth).

[Farscape One]

A few awesome ones to pick. I'm going to start with a perhaps unusual choice... "Genesis".

While I have other episodes on the list I personally love more, I can honestly say Gates McFadden did an outstanding job directing here. It is a fun, 'turn your brain off' episode with an extremely creepy, unsettling atmosphere throughout the episode. As a horror fan, I totally love what she did here.

A damned shame this is her only directing credit... I wish she got off more than once. (Much in the same way I felt about Tim Russ with "LIVING WITNESS".)

In terms of direction,

TNG Season 1: "When The Bough Breaks" (Kim Manners)

mixes some mundane shots with some rather clever ones - a striking and great moment is when they do the long shot of the crew in silhouette as they enter the energy chamber. A behind the scenes documentary revealed what trickery was used to make that scene very inexpensively, but the angle and lighting and everything else makes it look far more expensive than you'd think.

Wish she'd done more.

In terms of story, I'd not necessarily save it first... but not last, and this was during season 1 while it was figuring out itself. One week would be an after school special trope, the next would be some action and exploration fare, and the next would have the crew talking about - and much to the surprise and shock of the audience - how often the inhabitants copulate. This episode is a nice twist on adventure and suspense, combined with after school sledgehammering of some concepts, even if it's hard to believe the Alderans would nick just eight kids. It's also a shame the lead kid wasn't named "Blake".

Also, like or dislike, the idea of middle school kids learning basic calculus is not too sci-fi to not mention. I think it's charming.

Also, like or dislike, the idea of "gizmo you hold in your hand will do all the magical work for you" takes away from the creativity of hand-carving a dolphin, and playing an instrument - yet at the same time, an assistive tool can allow more people to do these things with greater ease, and yet there's that issue of mind/body coordination that arguably remains useful in other areas*... plus, the idea of a musical instrument that reacts to the mind offers unique opportunities that are just as personalized for expressive purposes. Then again, for most of us the machine would just scan the brain, emit a jumble of tones, then promptly explode.

* even including the planet of the boinkbunnies, which was aired a couple months earlier and who'd be remembering that in a good way...

Agreed about "Bough", you just beat me to it. Without the tacked on happy ending that didn't really make any sense, it would have been a decent episode. Wes was a actually tolerable in it!

For me, I'll give "Motion Picture" a save. It had some overtight costumes, but that's kind of expected on Trek (it was just the men's turn this time), and McCoy should have kept the beard. But there was some serious awesome in the mysterious V-ger. And besides, if Robert Wise did this AND "Thr Sound of Music", that shows him to be decidedly multitalented.

Kim Manners was a man. Damn good director... directed over 50 episodes of THE X-FILES and a bunch of SUPERNATURAL episodes until his death during season 4 of SUPERNATURAL. Damn cancer.
